Obama: US "Fully Prepared" For North Korea Missile Launch

North Korea

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama said the United States is "prepared for any contingencies" involving North Korea _ including the regime's reported threat to launch a long-range missile toward Hawaii.

Japanese media have reported the North Koreans appear to be preparing for a long-range test near July 4. Defense Secretary Robert Gates has ordered additional protections for Hawaii in case a missile is launched over the Pacific Ocean.

"This administration _ and our military is fully prepared for any contingencies," Obama said Friday during an interview with CBS News' Harry Smith, to be broadcast Monday on "The Early Show."

"I don't want to speculate on hypotheticals," Obama said. "But I want ... to give assurances to the American people that the t's are crossed and the i's are dotted in terms of what might happen."

On Monday, North Korea's main newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, said it is "nonsense" to say the country was threatening the U.S. The paper also warned that Pyongyang is prepared to strike back if attacked.

"As long as our country has become a proud nuclear power, the U.S. should take a correct look at whom it is dealing with," the paper said. "It would be a grave mistake for the U.S. to think it can remain unhurt if it ignites the fuse of war on the Korean peninsula."

The South Korean news network YTN reported Sunday that a U.S. Navy destroyer was tailing a North Korean ship, the Kang Nam, suspected of carrying illicit weapons toward Myanmar.

A senior U.S. military official told The Associated Press on Friday that a Navy ship, the USS John S. McCain, was relatively close to the North Korean vessel but had no orders to intercept it and had not requested that authority. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive issue of ship movements.

The Navy ship, a guided missile destroyer, is named after the grandfather and father of Arizona Sen. John McCain. Both were admirals.

Sen. McCain, who lost the 2008 presidential election to Obama, said Sunday that the U.S. should board the Kang Nam even without North Korean permission if hard evidence shows it is carrying missiles or other cargo in violation of U.N. resolutions.

"I think we should board it. It's going to contribute to the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction to rogue nations that pose a direct threat to the United States," McCain said on CBS' "Face the Nation."

The Kang Nam is reportedly the first North Korean vessel to be tracked under new U.N. sanctions.

Obama said Friday that those sanctions demonstrate "unity in the international community," including Russia and China.

"What we're not going to do is to reward belligerence and provocation," Obama told CBS.

McCain still thinks that jabbering about current events makes him relevant.

2000 miles. Half way to Hawaii. BTW: shooting down a missile in flight is NOT something easily done. Tests indicated that the Aegis system deployed on Navy ships could not hit a Taepodong missile rising from North Korea. Nor could the Ground-Based Missile Defense System deployed in Alaska hit the missile in its mid-course phase if the North deployed even the simplest of counter-measures such as decoys, chaff or jammers.

This is going to be great! The little leader is going to fire a blank missile that can't target or reach anything and we are going to shoot interceptor missiles that can't intercept anything. Japan may be in for a very hard rain of spent missile parts. brilliant!

I absolutely feel safe with Obama as President. Hot headed McCain would have us in another MAJOR war today if were President. Thank Goodness he is not, the American people got this one right! And if a war is started it will not be based upon lies and rhetoric like BUSH did for IRAQ.

Typical John McCain hot headedness. He tends to speak before he ponder his thoughts. Such stupidity can have grave results. Makes me think for our former president, Jumping into Iraq for WMD and not finding anything, yet thousands of GI's have died. Thank God Almighty that Senator McCain lost. Why don't he just GO AWAY!!

Thank God Obama is president. So far he has shown himself to be a master chess player with Castro, Iran and now North Korea.

How interesting.

Exactly what has he accomplished in those areas?
... Korea - nothing
... Iran - nothing
... Cuba - eased travel? Whoopty Doo!

It will take more than 6 months to change everything. It took 8 whole years to destroy. Be patient.....as patient as you were for the past 8 years with everything blowing up before your very eyes. You gave the last President 4 years, then gave him 4 more years even after seeing what he was doing. What are your expectations this time around?
08:54 AM on 06/22/2009
what? omg get a history book or something. We failed in 1953 in Korea with a stalemate war that cost hundreds of thousands of lives, and in Iran when we overthrew an elected government and installed the Shah that ended in disaster in 1979. In 1958 we installed Castro, he's still in charge there more than 50 years later. The President then was Eisnhower, a repug.

Kim Jong Il talking tough simply reminds me of Saddam threatening 'the mother of all wars' which turned out to be a 2-week landslide of a 'war' against his main defensive forces. North Korea is a starving, isolated, backward nation and our military DWARFS theirs several times over in every way. I'm not worried in the slightest. President Obama's got this on lock.

For Sale; Iraqi rifles all tpyes and calibers, never fired, dropped once. lmao

The President said without fanfare the t's are crossed and the i's are dotted. I for one am confident in that fact, so all the bully leaders of the world can go back to their corners, or do whatever they do, because the President has our back!

North Korea is acting like a child throwing a tantrum in a grocery store...dont give him that box of little debbie snack cakes, dont do it, it will get worse....all you have to do is walk away and leave him by himself...I doubt any predator would take a screaming child in a store with people watching, so hes safe...but the time he realizes your gone he will become afraid and will want you to help him....

Unfortunately, the US has given in in the past and now with new leadership a lot of retraining is necessary.

It seems to me that a lot of what our foreign policy adds up to is not taking the bait from the world's bullies. They can't take us in a real fight so they try to "get our goat" so to speak, by attempting to get a reaction in an unreasonably fashion like oh ... say ... our LAST Presidente. Our Bullies had a field day with him. You won't see that out of No Drama Obama and I am breathing a sigh of relief that the American people overwhelmingly elected him as our Commander In Chief.

Isn't John McCain currently the oldest man in the world. There was something in the news this week about the last surviving man to have served in WWI.
08:44 AM on 06/22/2009
My friend, you are too funny! But, your facts may be correct.
02:38 AM on 06/22/2009
People forget that the world is round. If the missile overshot, it would hit Alaska, not California. I am for moving Hawaii just a little closer to Alaska before July 4th.
08:23 AM on 06/22/2009
A shot from NK aimed at Hawaii would hit South America if it overshot by a considerable distance.
