Palin's Legal Debt Is More Than $500,000 As She Spars With Critics Over Ethics Complaints

RACHEL D'ORO   06/21/09 04:16 PM ET   AP

Palin

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin says her political enemies are abusing state law with a flurry of frivolous ethics complaints against her, putting her more than $500,000 in legal debt.

Those filing the grievances _ there have been at least 18 cases so far _ say it's their legal right to hold the Republican governor accountable for what they see as abuses of power.

The truth is probably somewhere in between.

"Are Alaskans outraged, or at least tired of this yet _ another frivolous ethics charge by a political blogger?" Palin asked in one statement.

Most of the complaints have been filed since last August, when GOP presidential candidate John McCain picked Palin as his running mate. And most have been denied.

Palin's office has called the multiple dismissals "mounting evidence that accusations of wrongdoing by the governor lack merit and have been politically or personally motivated."

Even some of Palin's critics question the validity of some of the complaints, and her supporters have waged a weeklong Webathon to raise money for a legal defense fund set up for the governor, ringing up more than $109,000 by day seven, Sunday.

But the number of filings may also reflect a broader awareness of ethics law in Alaska, where any citizen can send in any number of complaints. Some say they're taking Palin up on her own challenge to Alaska voters.

"She said she was going to be open, transparent and wanted people to hold her accountable," said Kim Chatman, an Eagle River resident whose complaint against Palin is among the few still pending. "I took her for her word."

All the complaints have been brought by Alaskans, except for one filed by Washington-based Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics alleging the $150,000-plus designer wardrobe the Republican Party bought to outfit Palin in her national quest violated the Federal Election Campaign Act. That complaint was dismissed.

One complaint, in which the Alaska Personnel Board found no wrongdoing, concluded with the governor agreeing to pay the state $10,000 for trips taken by her children _ money that is due Tuesday.

Another complaint, filed by Democratic blogger Linda Kellen Biegel, said Palin wore a jacket that promoted the sponsor of her husband's snowmobile racing team. That complaint, dismissed June 2, prompted Palin's statement about "frivolous" ethics charges.

Elected in 2006, Palin enjoyed an unprecedented 18-month honeymoon with Alaska residents and lawmakers alike until last July, when she fired Walt Monegan, the state's popular public safety commissioner.

Monegan believed he was terminated over his refusal to let go a state trooper who was involved in a contentious divorce with Palin's sister. Palin cited budgetary disagreements.

State lawmakers investigated, ultimately concluding the governor broke an ethics law that prohibits public officials from using their office for personal gain, although the firing itself was considered lawful since Monegan was an at-will employee.

Days after being named McCain's running mate, Palin said the legislative probe had become too political and filed a "self disclosure" with the Alaska Personnel Board, whose three members are appointed by the governor. The day before the presidential election, that investigation concluded that Palin violated no ethics laws.

Palin was wrong to publicly criticize the complaints before the appropriate government body _ the personnel board in most cases _ had a chance to analyze them, said Gregg Erickson, a Juneau economist and longtime watcher of Alaska politics. That's simply bad politics, he said.

"She rises to the bait fairly quickly when they troll these things by her," he said. "I think it's a weakness."

Chatman said she voted for Palin to be governor, but now sees her as unethical, sacrificing the state's interest to advance her national ambitions. Palin is widely believed to be considering a 2012 presidential run.

Chatman's complaint alleges Palin is misusing the governor's office for personal gain by securing unwarranted benefits and receiving improper gifts through the Alaska Fund Trust, which was established by supporters in April to help Palin pay her legal bills.

Alaska law mandates that ethics grievances remain confidential unless a public accusation is filed or the accused person agrees in writing to make it public. However, most complainants have ignored this requirement and have publicly discussed their grievances without any legal consequences.

"Why is confidentiality so important? So the process does not become a forum for partisan attacks, headline seekers and disgruntled wing-nuts," Palin attorney Thomas Van Flein said in an e-mail. "This is exactly the type of political gamesmanship the confidentiality clause was intended to prevent."

Chatman said she spoke with an attorney and learned she wouldn't breach confidentiality if she talked about her grievance before filing it in late April. She said she did just that, based on a lack of trust in the Palin administration.

"I thought it would be swept under the carpet if the public didn't know about it," she said.

Sounds like she needs to hire a more ethical lawyer, or is that a contradiction in words? Truth is, no one has seen these legal bills, failin palin just picks numbers out of the air to encourage the mentally challenged tight wing wackos to send money to her funds.

The best thing for Palin to do is to simply stop doing unethical things. That's my best advice. Just because Palin says these complaints are frivolous does not make them it so, especially in light of the fact that she hired all three members of the Personnel Board, known to be her friends, who have dismissed one complaint after another.

One or two complaints may be frivolous or unwarranted, four or five is pushing it, but 18 complaints? There must be merit in these and I think it's time for the Alaskans to consider recalling this appalling (wow it rhymes) governor, and find someone who could actually govern the state and get things done. The Alaskans deserve so much better.

so right and if people did not at least talk about the complaints they would be swept under the rug and no one would know anything about it,,Palin makes figures up in her head it has been said the figure is about 396.000 and most of that is because she hired her own attorney and filed a complaint against herself so it would to to the board who she has control of,So she bought this on herself and I sure hope some of you that feel she is picked on remember what she did to Biden and Obama and they took the heat,Seems she can't Her friends were calling out kill him etc at least the and it is both republicans and democrats that do not like her.are not that rabid.

Ironically, here’s the governor’s Father’s Day message from Twitter:

Happy Father’s Day to every dad, everywhere! I’m thankful for my dad’s lessons re: no one will just hand you anything, you must work for it8:16 PM Jun 20th from TwitterBerry

That’s right. Nobody will just hand you anything….except money…but you have to get people to raise it for you … and get it from many people who have a lot less than you do… and not explain what exactly they’re paying for.

If the ghost of P.T. Barnum had a Twitter account and was paying attention to all this, I bet his tweet would say:

AKns & others still giving hard earned $$$ to SP mystery fund. Like I said, there’s a sucker born every minute! 10:26am Jun 22 from TwitterBerry.

Let’s face it. Anyone who likes a good three-ring circus would be eating this up with a spoon.

She was a nobody when she was picked as VP, she should still be a nobody after being sent home to Alaska.

I beg to ask this question. She is not, and never has been a serious candidate for high office in the country. Why does the media pretend otherwise? She will never, ever win the nomination. And if she does, that wouldn't be a miracle, that would be the sign of the apocalypse as it means that America has lost it's mind completely. Even the Republicans hate her, you honestly think they are going to allow her to run for them? LOLOL

The press needs to stop legitimizing her. She's not, and never has been, a legitimate candidate. So stop trying to make her into something she's not. Please. I'm tired of hearing people whine about her.
05:50 PM on 06/22/2009
Excellent point, and I am with you on all of them. What makes me the angriest, though, is how NOW embraced Palin's cause and stood behind her. She has never been an advocate for women, makes women pay for their own rape kits, not to mention, the psychic violence perpetrated upon those who go to abortion clinics, and the murder of Dr. Tiller.

David Letterman should never have apologized, and the feud, which dominated the media for about a week, was yet another ploy from Sarah Palin to gain money and support.
09:56 PM on 06/22/2009
I differ with you on this. The media's coverage of Sarah Palin doesn't mean they are legitimizing her. On the contrary, the Gibson, Couric and Williams interviews showed some of her deep flaws. Subsequent coverage in the news tarnished her image. The only exceptions are Faux and some tabloid publications.

The media can't be blamed for covering her because they are in it for ratings. She feeds them more reasons to cover her, such as her debacle with Letterman.

No candidate for national office stands a chance in winning and avoiding the majority of the media in lieu of press coverage by tabloids and Faux.

The lawyer meter is running faster than the donations. Sarah's legal bills are now close to $600,000.

You know, of all of the professions on the planet, the one with the least justification for it's existance is the profession of lawyer. As well, it's even among the world's most notorious professions, ranking a good 100 spots down the list from things like "escort" and "prostitute".
04:26 PM on 06/22/2009
William Shakespeare got it right when he said "Let's kill all the lawyers."
05:52 PM on 06/22/2009
Well, good, then. Palin has to pay these humongous bills and getting nothing in return.

$500,000 is a lot of bridges to nowhere. She sure doesn't seem to be taking the "Fiscal Conservative" thing too seriously, especially since she's the governor of the ONLY Socialist state in America.

If Socialism is so good for Alaska, why does she think it's bad for America? If it's bad, why hasn't she been trying to dismantal all that evil Socialism in Alaskan government?
04:02 PM on 06/22/2009
These questions are too hard for her since she spends much of her time watching Russia and getting soon-to-be ex-in-laws fired.

In my best dream scenario Palin runs in 2012 and President Obama kicks her bu.tt in all 50 states by the biggest margin in history. Please let it be so. It would not even be a contest and the debates certainly would be entertaining.
02:27 PM on 06/22/2009
Gov. Palin should consider applying her much-publicized book advance to her legal bills. I'm sure there will be a chapter in there where she'll whine about all this. Just don't count on book revenue to bail her out.
03:15 PM on 06/22/2009
Sarah setup the legal bailout fund before she signed the book deal. That wasn't a coincidence.
05:59 PM on 06/22/2009
You're absolutely right! Why don't some of these people who are being hit up for money say something. Afterall, people are giving away their hard earned money for a lost cause, and as was mentioned earlier, she probably has more money than any of these SUCKERS!

Of the eighteen complaints, sixteen have been dismissed and two are pending. Palin is winning on the merits but losing financially. Politically, she appeals to the conservative base but not beyond that group. If republicans want to win national elections, they have to figure out how to move beyond the right-wing base.

Sarah Pain is a GOP Gov, with ethics complaints being reviewed by a predominately Republican Board...nothing will happen with one complaint. Alaska follows Alabama in more ways than alphabetically ....need I say any more?

I HAD A PRESIDENT WHO TALKED WITH ME

I had a president who talked with me.
Allowed me the right to disagree,
To question — and always answered me,
As well as he could — and truthfully.
He talked of adventures; horrors of war;
Of life, its meaning; what love was for.
How each would always need to strive
To improve the world to keep it alive.
Stressed the duty we owe one another
To be aware each man is a brother.
Time runs along, some say I’m wise,
That I look at life through his eyes.
My heart is happy, my mind is free,
I had a president who talked with me.

As Mayor, Sarah Palin took office with a $4 Million Surplus, when Palin left office in 2002, Wasilla had “racked up nearly $20 million in long-term debt,” or roughly $3,000 of debt per resident. "

That was amazing especially considering that she got about $27 Million in Federal Earmarks for Wasilla for the 4 years she was mayor. Meaning that she somehow spent over $47 Million in 4 years on a town of 10,000.
