10 Easy Ways To Improve Your Gas Mileage

As it turns out, trading your ride in for a hybrid isn't the only way to improve your gas mileage. Here are some simple pointers to get started.

I filled my tires with nitrogen instead of air, nitrogen is a fatter than air it keeps the tire full much much longer. Wish I had one of those new diesel engine European cars, they get 40 mile per gallon!
Grab a Volkwagon Jetta TDI. 40mpg there.
Also, the TDI Beetle get upwards of 50mpg, with reports of 70mpg with "tweaking" possible.
Here's and article on the bug:

physics 101
the number 1 answer should be (i haven't clicked on the link)....,
the smaller the car, the better the gas mileage
or maybe i should say..., the lighter the car
the better the gas mileage
try the experiment yourself...., put a hummer in neutral and try to push it.
then put an old VW bug in neutral and try to push it
which one is easier for you to push?
in the language of pyshics, the less massive an object is, the less energy needed to cause it to accelerate .
an better way to save gas is to just not drive at all
I agree...lighter (less mass) and also form drag (shape). There have been lots of light, high mileage cars...it's easy to do. The old Kia Ford imported as the Festiva got 52mpg like clockwork and went for 200k miles relentlessly. The current Fiat Cinquecento (500) gets 62 mpg. These are just two examples of light and well made cars (and fairly inexpensive to boot). Now is we dropped the typical weight of a car to 1600 lbs....and went to diesels...we could pick up another 50% effortlessly. (btw an MG Midget or a Lotus Elan are examples of 1600 lb cars, not a stretch). That should be the starting place for a hybrid...which would considerably boost mpg even further. There is no excuse at all that we aren't buying cheap, safe cars for under $20k that get over 125 mpg. No valid excuse that is.
i'm saving at least 25% now that dick cheney isn't the vice president.
Eleven. Just stop driving as much as you can, carpool, walk , ride bike, combine trips, do something where you don't need to drive. We will break the speculators and the oil cartels
Some of the tips are inaccurate:
"Use cruise control as much as possible because driving at a constant speed increases your gas mileage. Plus, it sure makes that daily commute a little more bearable."
Cruise control can decrease mileage in hilly/mountainous areas. Your car will be more efficient at a constant _power setting_ in such areas.
"Only turn on the air conditioning when you’re dripping sweat and threatened by heat stroke. Okay, maybe that’s a bit extreme, but you get the idea. Use it sparingly."
At highway speeds, many modern cars will get better mileage with the A/C on and the windows up than with the A/C off and the windows down. Driving with the windows down causes a significant increase in drag.
My car gets better gas mileage when people aren't allowed to speculate with the price of oil and then lie to us that it's about supply and demand. It never has been.
Another thing people can do is take your tires in to have the air replaced with nitrogen. They'll green-cap your valve caps once they're done so you and others will know that's what you have in your tires. My mother-in-law has nitrogen in her '06 Murano's tires and she's increased her gas mileage 4-5 mpg within a couple of months driving the same stretch every morning and afternoon.
Nonsense. Take a basic science class.
That's funny. Because I personally watched her gas mileage increase after having replaced the air in her tires with nitrogen, since I drive her car quite a bit. Same went for my father's Chevy and my wife's Maxima.
But nice try.
Eleven: Sell you car and ride a bike.
Not only does that improve you gas mileage, it improves your health. And the health of the planet.
Your old car will still get crummy mileage for the guy that you sell it to.
Back in the old days of Mobil mileage testing the driver put sandpaper on their bare feet to get the best feel of the accelerator.
Cruise control surges and doesn't help.
Just buy an install everything in J.C. Whitney catalogue and get 300 percent better mileage.
I especially like the atomizer installed just before the carburetor hahaha.
I have an Audi A6 TDI 6 speed that gets 40mpg cruising at 100 mph (legal here in Germany).
Turbo diesels have been around here for 15 years .
What is the purchase price of this vehicle in US dollars?
That's very impressive. My wife and both have US versions of the A6 (gas engine) and don't get anywhere near that kind of mileage.
My A6 2.7t 6 speed at best gets about 28 mpg on the highway at 70 mph.
My wife's A6 wagon 3.0 automatic only gets about 24 mpg on the highway.

What everyone needs to know if that burning tire at green light is about the worst thing you can do besides letting your engine idle. My Prius shows me how much gas I use every second, and I always notice I use the most gas when the engine turns on when I am not going anywhere and when I start moving from stopping. I see so many young people turning tire at the lights, and I am thinking that if all cars were equipped with these gas usage meters, that would discourage some of this behavior?
Too bad you look silly inside of it.
I'll stick with my BMW.
I hear the brakes have been known to fail in the rain.
So does my BMW
