NEW YORK -

Apple Inc. sold more than a million units of its latest iPhone model in the first three days, making it the most successful model yet.

The iPhone 3G S went on sale Friday in the U.S. and seven other countries.

When Apple Inc. launched the previous model last year, it also sold one million units in the first three days, but that model launched simultaneously in 22 countries.

Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster had expected the Cupertino, Calif., company to sell half a million 3G S in the first three days.

"Customers are voting and the iPhone is winning," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. It was the first time he was quoted in a company statement since he went on leave for unspecified medical reasons in January. The company has said that Jobs, who has battled pancreatic cancer, is returning to work at the end of the month.

The Wall Street Journal reported Saturday that Jobs had a liver transplant two months ago in Tennessee and that he will likely work part-time, at least initially. Apple has not commented on the report.

The launch of the iPhone 3G last year turned messy, as Apple and phone company servers failed to cope with the load of new customers trying to activate their phones. That problem recurred Friday with the launch of the 3G S, but to a smaller extent. Some customers who tried to activate the phone at home got messages that the process could take 48 hours to complete.

Some customers got e-mails on Sunday promising a $30 credit at Apple's iTunes store as compensation for the hassle.

Apple did not break down where the million units were sold. Dallas-based AT&T Inc. is the iPhone's exclusive carrier in the United States and has said it sold hundreds of thousands of phones via pre-order.

In its two-year life, the iPhone has revolutionized phone design and given AT&T a leg up on its rivals in recruiting customers willing to pay high monthly fees.

Competitors have started to catch up to some of the iPhone's signature features. In particular, the newly released Palm Inc.'s Pre, available exclusively for now through Sprint Nextel Corp., has generated a lot of buzz and favorable reviews.

But the iPhone is still the king of smart phones.

If the new iPhone is anything like the iPod, which I documented in a blog at http://proudlymadeinamerica.com/?paged=5, then it will be a net negative on the US economy. In my "The Innovation Myth" post, I show how a product conceived and designed in the US by a US company caused a significant net negative on the US economy. More money flowed out of the US due to US iPod then came in due to foreign sales. Same is probably true for the iPhone.

If the truth were being reported we'd be having riots in the streets. And meanwhile the top execs in banks and brokeragesa that caused such a mess are STILL employed and making millions while laying off THOUSANDS of people that actually do work. If you know anyone in banking that's still employed, odds are they are doing the work of three people so the top execs can show 'savings' and contineu collecting mega-incomes.

I just recycled my Motorola Q and got a 3G (s)...There simply is no comparison between the two. It's like the Q is a couple cups with a string compared to the iPhone. I can't believe I waited so long.

I got my 3G S yesterday and I could not be happier. I started down this road nearly a decade ago with a Handspring Visor, went to the Palm Treo, and for me the 3G S fulfills the promise of both. The app store is what made me a believer (and yes I have the HuffPost app). I debated waiting for the Pre, but once I had the 3G S in my hands I couldn't imagine not having it. It's just an amazing device.

Because I'm a choosy consumer, I read about products and services whenever I can. While the Little Nickel is clearly superior, the Huffington Post does a very good job of keeping me abreast of all my favorite business news.

The iPhone "killer" didn't even scratch the King of Smartphones. Palm forgot two crucial elements in releasing the Pre, design elegance and style. There's nothing like the original, and the copies are sorely lacking. The Pre is clunky, the Blackberry Storm's touch screen is problematical and not easy to use. They can't even copy Apple properly.

Speaking of iphone killer, where is that Pre douch.ebag mjb5406? Seems just a couple of weeks ago he was extolling how much better the Pre is than the iPhone and talking a lot of smack. Pre sold 50,000 units its first weekend, Apple sales a million. Have you seen the Pre fanbois out there reviewing the phone. Apparently there are a lot of problems with the fit of the battery and they have to put a piece of paper between the battery and the handset in order for the phone not to shut off when flipping out the keyboard. Speaking of the Pre keyboard, some owners are complaining of massive lacerations they received from the sharp edges on the keyboard's edge. Well perhaps thats an exaggerations, they are just paper cut size. Still it must really s.uck to get a paper cut everytime you use your keyboard.

In 2007, it took 74 days to sell one million iPhones since its initial release and since then, Apple has released the iPhone 3G, and now the 3Gs, both of which hit the one million mark in a single weekend!

I believe the iPhone to be the great leveler. Its feature-set and benchmarks are well known and these standards will now be compared across the spectrum of carriers, illuminating their shortcomings. Witness AT&T's struggle to bring tethering and MMS to iPhone consumers, something European & Asians already enjoy.

iPhone users enjoy a better online experience in spite of AT&T.

Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile all THINK their ready for iPhone but they have no idea what a drain this new gadget is on resources and not until they have deployed this device will they understand the known-knowns known by AT&T.

Much the same way AT&T has misjudged the iPhone consumer, which was clearly demonstrated over the weekend when AT&T turned off their stores' in-house phone system to avoid having to deal with irate customers who couldn't buy an iPhone in the after-hours, so too will the other American carriers.

Current iPhone users have come to expect a standard of excellence and will demand it of any carrier who deems themselves worthy of deploying such a device and Twitter will be their weapon of choice.

Go Apple!

great, if an Andriod device ever has the design AND functionality of the new iPhone, I'll buy it... but somehow I don't think it's going to happen.
