Johny Depp is a great actor on weird roles. I can't wait to see this movie.

Burton has completely disappointed me as of late, still I have a place for him due to Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Ed Wood and perhaps even Sleepy Hollow (though this was the beginning of the downslide). Still, after reading some of the comments here, let me assure you, his darker aesthetic doesn't just appeal to kids, though he's made a few of these lately (Charlie just creeped me out - and not in the usual good way). I just hope Anne Hathaway can add something to the familiar HBC and Depp combo, and that it is somewhat faithful to the novel.

I am sooooo sick of Johnny Depp and H. B. Carter in these Tim Burton wankfests. Barrrrrfffff!!!

That said, I do like the psychedelic LOOK of what I see. I don't have much hope Burton's take on "Alice" will reflect well on Lewis Carroll's fine literature, though (or the circumstances that brought it about). Look at how Burton crapped all over Roald Dahl's exquisite "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," for example (excuse me while I throw up in my mouth): too much commercialism, not very charming, and then there's the Michael Jackson-like performance of Depp. Do our cherished childrens' classics have to be brought to the screen as such ugly reflections on pop culture -- the ultimate tabloid sell-out? "Charlie" wound up being dated material before it even hit theaters...

And, oh GAWD, I pray "Alice" is not another operetta!!!

If we're lucky (and laws change), the marketing experts will hand out "magic mushrooms" with each admission so we can truly appreciate this effects extravaganza (quite in keeping with Alice's adventures as they were originally penned).

Have you really read Dahl's Charlie lately? The original movie was way off from the book and Dahl hated it - Burton's version is WAY closer to the text, down to taking the song lyrics straight from the book. I think people are seeing "reflections on pop culture" and tabloids when they aren't really there.

Agreed. I HATED the Wilder version. The casting of that movie was beyond terrible, as was the music.

Burton took some creative license with the book, but was quite close to the original work in text and tone. The actors who played Charlie and his grandparents were all PERFECT for those roles.

I'm rather indifferent towards Depp's interpretation of Wonka, but it was better than Wilder's.

How terrible. Seems to me Burton is trying too hard. This movie isn't geared towards the admirers of Lewis Carroll's novel; it's nothing more than a cheap attempt to gain a superficial fallowing of fangirls. Talk about selling out.

Oh, RedGinger, let Jacki have his/her say! It's not being a killjoy to point out that Burton sells out -- that's pretty well known from the circles I run in. Besides, no matter how many people say they don't like Burton's work, the kids will eat it up...Ch-Ching!!! It'll probably make lotsa munny and everyone involved will dance and sing (you too). "Yay!" (cough, splutter)

Whether Burton could have worked his magic with an original script rather than peeing all over Lewis Carroll's literary masterpieces is a genuine and valid concern, though. "The Nightmare Before Christmas" seemed clever, but his "Big Fish" sucked and "Charlie" was a well publicized cash-in before it was turned loose.

Heck, I'm all for freaky filmmaking but let's have some originality! I myself wonder if this movie will be any better than Disney's flawed adaptation from the 50s. We'll see...

Sorry, but I don't see what is "selling out" about this. I would think selling out would be making it really safe and bland, and going with more big name actors instead of people like HBC.

Apparently those that admire Lewis Carroll are all the same and interpret his work the same way, right? You are missing the beauty of storytelling and film making.

I wish Depp would quit wasting his talent being a part of Tim Burton's freak show.

I'm not familiar with the actress playing Alice, but this is one I'll see at the theatre. I know some see Burton's rich artistic vision as overly busy and odd or uninteresting, and y'all have a right to an opinion. But these stories speak to many of us because at his best, Burton's work has a timeless and very human story-telling quality. With a special flair for the other-worldly, Burton's set design, costumes and lighting alone are a form of visual artistry I have to see on the big screen. Not to mention a timely story contrasting a child's point of view with mature and intriguing political themes......it's also just about the trippiest little journey in the English language.

In these troubled times, who wouldn't want to step through the looking glass for a few hours with Helena Bohnam Carter, Johnny Depp and Anne Hathaway....and there'll probably be some fun casting surprises when we meet the Cheshire cat, caterpillar and.......who knows?? I'm late, I'm late....

My comments weren't a recommendation that everyone go see the film. I'm just sharing my enthusiasm for this director's work (and a fondness for the story). Of course, I wouldn't rate Willy Wonka as a "good" movie (Johnny D's performance often felt forced and self-consciously quirky, among other faults). But my childhood has survived in all it's vivid glory because I can handle a little disappointment.....those who worry about being "wrong" when risking a ticket to a movie often end up missing some great films....but that's a perfectly reasonable personal choice. Mine's a little different....

A Burton-Depp project is always worth seeing. Johhny Depp is a terrifically adventurous and creative actor, one who shuns the "safe" reading of the character and who so often pulls unexpected interpretations out of the script.
