I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Obama

There was no shortage of news on Sunday, with an uprising in Iran approaching new levels of violence, nuclear brinkmanship in North Korea, and crisis in health care reform.

One of the most frequent questions asked at the daily press briefing at the White House, however, was a bit more personal: Was President Obama still smoking cigarettes?

Earlier in the day, the president had signed an anti-smoking bill that gave the Food and Drug Administration more authority to regulate cigarette sales and advertising. And in the process, the president referenced his own struggles as a smoker -- which he said he gave up during the presidential campaign.

"Each day, 1,000 young people under the age of 18 become new, regular, daily smokers, and almost 90 percent of all smokers began at or before their 18th birthday," said the president. "I know. I was one of these teenagers. And so I know how difficult it can be to break this habit when it's been with you for a long time."

Hours later, in between a host of questions on weighty international and domestic topics, the press flexed its curiosity. Four separate times, Press Secretary Robert Gibs was asked whether Obama was still smoking or, by extension, why he wasn't more autobiographical in his remarks.

From the White House transcript come the following exchanges:

Q: And just quickly, could you be more clear than you have been about whether the President does still occasionally continue smoking?

MR. GIBBS: I haven't probed any deeper than the statements that I've given you all in the past several days, that, as he has told me, it's something that he continues to struggle with as somebody -- like millions of Americans have.

Q : Robert, just to follow up on Jennifer's question on smoking, why haven't you probed the President on his smoking habits?

MR. GIBBS: Just hasn't crossed my mind.

Story continues below

Q: I mean, it just seems to me like today it would have been a good explanation point at the end to say, you know, I had this habit and I kicked the habit --

MR. GIBBS: Well, Dan --

Q: -- if in fact that's what he's done.

MR. GIBBS: I think that anybody that -- I'm not a smoker, I don't -- it's probably just one vice I don't have. I think the President has on any number of occasions discussed the struggle that -- the vice of smoking, what's that done to him and that he struggles with it every day. I don't honestly see the need to get a whole lot more specific than the fact that it's a continuing struggle.

Q: If I could ask one more thing on smoking. During the campaign, the President -- then-senator at the time -- and Mrs. Obama went on "60 Minutes" and used his smoking as part of his biography, as part of his sort of campaign narrative, if you will. He has used his biography in many ways. Why not use this as an opportunity, if he has or if he hasn't quit smoking, to discuss this with the American people or even offer a warning to young children about smoking?

MR. GIBBS: Well, again, I think he was fairly forward today in discussing the fact that this is, as I've said throughout the last couple of weeks, something that he continues to struggle with.

Q: No, he used about eight words in his speech, though, as opposed to saying something that --

MR. GIBBS: I don't know what the appropriate word count would have been in order to check the box. And, again, I think the President spoke about this in personal terms, regardless of the word count.

Q: Is it something that still aggravates him, when he's asked about this?

MR. GIBBS: Maybe I should give you that opportunity to ask tomorrow. (Laughter.)

Q: I did ask him, and he turned away -- walked away.

MR. GIBBS: Well, go figure.

Q: I'd just like to follow up on cigarettes. When you say he still struggles, does that mean he still smokes sometimes? Is that what that means?

MR. GIBBS: I'm not going to parse the President's words on this today.

Q: So those were not how he describes it?

MR. GIBBS: How did he say it today?

Q: He said, in the past, he had been one of the teenagers who had been -- or the current -- I just wanted to understand the --

MR. GIBBS
: Again, I think I said last week -- I'd have to go back and look at my exact statement -- but I got from him that obviously this is a struggle that he continues to have.

I certainly hope he stops for his personal health and so he is around a long time for his kids.
But in the midst of the world wide crisis not to mention borderline treasonous opposition here at home.
I would understand if he had o slip out and take a smoke once n a while just to exhale for a moment.
I mean really they want to know if thye are stressing him out yet huh, if he is ready to pop his top and curse...what cha think ..........
It is garbage time in the media,
Our nation is worth saving form the MSM and the extremes of our nation that would rather see it burn than see it reform and BE a better nation.
Yes our nation is worth saving, it just takes time and hard work
So get up, everyday and work on you slice and I will meet you in the middle.

thats very true but the press is not free in the first place. Self-censorship and boardroom ideological zeal contrive to warp or negate crucial info the public needs. In the last 10 years, and probably much longer, America's newsmedia has served no useful function. It has become one with those it should be investigating. So yes the MSM can wither on the vine and the new media can bring in new blood.

The problem is that EVERYONE'S looking for an "Ah Ha!!!!...GOTCHA" moment, even when it's NONE OF THEIR BUSINESS. Are any job descriptions clear anymore. The overwhelming desire to get into people's personal business is rampant in this country. The interest is not that they care for a good and honorable reason, it's just our propensity to deal a death blow to someone on a moralistic basis. We are all immoral in our own way. Being a Christian in one's heart is a joke as every intention is based on evil intentions.

Look at all the people who specialize in going out holding candles in the name of a worthwhile cause. Caring? I don't think so. SMH What a joke. We don't care about each other; instead, we seek to destroy. We glory in elevating people to celebrity status, and we glory and salivate in bringing them down. What a nation...what a joke...what a travesty.

Look at our press corps asking all the tuff questions getting tot he bottom of things, wow such investigative reporting ..........NOT.
I am so sick of these press bum’s, they are far from the regular working men and women that made their profession a great beacon in the past, not saying media was ever perfect but the 24 hr news cycle as corporatization has definitely laid waste, or rather produced nothing more than waste on a day to day basis for so long.
Will we ever get good news again, or will it forever be one sided stories, and political turmoil.
Instead of just some good common sense. !!

If you are still breathing everyone is smoking. What is spewed into the air by factorys everyday makes everyone a smoker. So you can blame the smokers for this countrys ills , if it makes you feel better.

MSM = Idiots.
To "still struggle" with something means that you're still doing it!
They want Gibbs to say, "HEAR YE HEAR YE! The 44th President of this great land, the United States of America, Barack H. Obama, is still an occasional smoker, and it is a source of deep regret as he signs this smoking regulation bill on this day!!"
After that, they'll ask : "What BRAND??"

This same press corp never asked George Bush or his press sec. if he was sneaking a drink now and then. Why on earth would the press be trying to make an issue out of THIS. I swear, I think it is time to do away with the White House press. If we want tabloid news we will buy a tabloid. The press corp has plenty of real news to cover so GROW UP PEOPLE.

I think that he should quit. If you are signing an anti smoking bill into law, it;s hypocritical of you to continue smoking, or never stop. What kind of do as I say, not as I do message is that?!

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:33 AM on 06/23/2009

Why is it hypocritical? It's going to affect him too. It's not like his packs will be exempt from the law or anything. Go back to your old, tired criticisms...you know , the ones FOX News feeds you.

I don't watch Fox. I prefer MSNBC, and what does my viewing preferences have to do with anything. I have no sympathy for smokers. Smoking is bad for you, and it harms others around you. I feel the same way about persons who drink alcohol then get behind the wheel. It is crazy to think that anyone should listen to Obama about why they should quit smoking when he can't even do it himself.

Just because I disagree with this policy does not mean I do not support Obama overall. You need to get over yourself. Obama can be wrong about something (this from an ardent supporter!)

I think I should quit too, but it's really reallly hard...so, if Obama signs in this new legislation that can actually be effective in helping millions of people quite, including TPOTUS, he's a hypocrite? Start smoking and tell me how difficult it is to stop.

Quitting smoking is NOT easy. I'm sure the President struggles with this habit like most smokers. That's why he chews "nicorette" gum, to help him stop. He may fall of the "smoker's wagon" every now and again, because its a struggle. I know, I use to smoke.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:20 AM on 06/23/2009

That's a foolish line of reasoning. First of all, he's not legislating adults' rights to make decisions, good or bad, when it comes to legal products. The President's continued struggle with smoking along with the millions of others who struggle with it every day are testaments to how criminal the tobacco industry is and how much they deserve to be regulated. Yes, he should quit smoking, but for his own health, not to appease people like you or to be a mascot for this bill.

GOOD GOD! ARE THESE PEOPLE SERIOUS!? I heard Contessa Brewer right after the signing yesterday saying something like "I certainly would like to know if he has actually quit...". The only thing missing was a Tsk! Tsk! and pursed lips! This pathetic puritanical obsession about his smoking from the press is obscene. We want him to pull us out of a worldwide financial crisis, fight and win 2 wars not of his making, balance a budget Bush dragged down the rat hole, magically deal with a nuclear North Korea, provide us with every legislative wish we've ever wanted, produce an ever ascending "greatest speech ever" AND stop smoking. In under 6 months I might add.

You know, there are days when I'm not at all sure we're a society worth saving. One can only hope the universe will take pity on us.

Back to silly season. That reporter ought to be demoted back to the little leagues. Just how important is it that the world know if the President still smokes. My gut tells me that he does? My spirit tells me that he really wants to quit but is struggling to give up the habit. It's not easy...as an ex-smoker, this is something that takes a lot of time and will power...and if you already are a smoker, having one of the most stressful jobs in the world is going to make it that much harder. President Obama probably could have kicked this habit if he had done so before running for President...he went through a gruelsome campaigne and stepped into the worst economic disaster this country, in fact, this world has seen since the 1930's. Give the man a break. He wants to quit and he will, I am sure of it...

I think the fact that he is not opening smoking cigerettes is in itself a good thing. He probably doesn't want his daughters or any other impressionable young people seeing the President of the US seeking a smoke. Leave it alone---- already!!!
