I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Obama

There was no shortage of news on Sunday, with an uprising in Iran approaching new levels of violence, nuclear brinkmanship in North Korea, and crisis in health care reform.

One of the most frequent questions asked at the daily press briefing at the White House, however, was a bit more personal: Was President Obama still smoking cigarettes?

Earlier in the day, the president had signed an anti-smoking bill that gave the Food and Drug Administration more authority to regulate cigarette sales and advertising. And in the process, the president referenced his own struggles as a smoker -- which he said he gave up during the presidential campaign.

"Each day, 1,000 young people under the age of 18 become new, regular, daily smokers, and almost 90 percent of all smokers began at or before their 18th birthday," said the president. "I know. I was one of these teenagers. And so I know how difficult it can be to break this habit when it's been with you for a long time."

Hours later, in between a host of questions on weighty international and domestic topics, the press flexed its curiosity. Four separate times, Press Secretary Robert Gibs was asked whether Obama was still smoking or, by extension, why he wasn't more autobiographical in his remarks.

From the White House transcript come the following exchanges:

Q: And just quickly, could you be more clear than you have been about whether the President does still occasionally continue smoking?

MR. GIBBS: I haven't probed any deeper than the statements that I've given you all in the past several days, that, as he has told me, it's something that he continues to struggle with as somebody -- like millions of Americans have.

Q : Robert, just to follow up on Jennifer's question on smoking, why haven't you probed the President on his smoking habits?

MR. GIBBS: Just hasn't crossed my mind.

Q: I mean, it just seems to me like today it would have been a good explanation point at the end to say, you know, I had this habit and I kicked the habit --

MR. GIBBS: Well, Dan --

Q: -- if in fact that's what he's done.

MR. GIBBS: I think that anybody that -- I'm not a smoker, I don't -- it's probably just one vice I don't have. I think the President has on any number of occasions discussed the struggle that -- the vice of smoking, what's that done to him and that he struggles with it every day. I don't honestly see the need to get a whole lot more specific than the fact that it's a continuing struggle.

Q: If I could ask one more thing on smoking. During the campaign, the President -- then-senator at the time -- and Mrs. Obama went on "60 Minutes" and used his smoking as part of his biography, as part of his sort of campaign narrative, if you will. He has used his biography in many ways. Why not use this as an opportunity, if he has or if he hasn't quit smoking, to discuss this with the American people or even offer a warning to young children about smoking?

MR. GIBBS: Well, again, I think he was fairly forward today in discussing the fact that this is, as I've said throughout the last couple of weeks, something that he continues to struggle with.

Q: No, he used about eight words in his speech, though, as opposed to saying something that --

MR. GIBBS: I don't know what the appropriate word count would have been in order to check the box. And, again, I think the President spoke about this in personal terms, regardless of the word count.

Q: Is it something that still aggravates him, when he's asked about this?

MR. GIBBS: Maybe I should give you that opportunity to ask tomorrow. (Laughter.)

Q: I did ask him, and he turned away -- walked away.

MR. GIBBS: Well, go figure.

Q: I'd just like to follow up on cigarettes. When you say he still struggles, does that mean he still smokes sometimes? Is that what that means?

MR. GIBBS: I'm not going to parse the President's words on this today.

Q: So those were not how he describes it?

MR. GIBBS: How did he say it today?

Q: He said, in the past, he had been one of the teenagers who had been -- or the current -- I just wanted to understand the --

MR. GIBBS
: Again, I think I said last week -- I'd have to go back and look at my exact statement -- but I got from him that obviously this is a struggle that he continues to have.

Nobody's business. It's not like it's affecting his governing decisions, not after his recent legislation. I'm a smoker and it's becoming crazy expensive and now with the new legislation, it's probably time to quit. Ha! If only it were that easy. This is the worst possible time to quit, what with all of the worries. I've given up my car and my cable; I think I'll smoke a while longer until they send us all to that leper colony-like island of misfits. More and more, we're headed there. But, listen up, all of you gamblers, porn watchers and drinkers, YOU'RE NEXT! And then? Maybe they'll go after the chocolate eaters or whichever "vice" you prefer to indulge in.

The press corps has become incredibly lazy. But then again, real news is so much work.

Thank you mr. president & congress for expanding the role of government in my personal life. I don't know what I would have done without you. Goodness knows I shouldn't be allowed to make a personal choice myself on matters concerning my body...

You really need to read the articles before you comment. The tobacco legislation does not in any way 'expand the role of government in your personal life' nor does it prevent you 'making a personal choice yourself on matters concerning your body'. You may still smoke up a storm in the privacy of your own home.

The bill in fact gives the FDA, authority to regulate the content, marketing and sale of cigarettes and other tobacco products. It restricts the tobacco industry. Not individual smokers.

No where in that bill, did it take away your right to smoke.

Obama is forcing you to let an insurance company decide your medical?
Obama is telling you what medical procedures you can have or not?

Quit f00ling yourself, the GOP has always been the party of meddling in the personal lives of others, while ignoring required watching over th e private sector.

I wish the Press Corp would want to know why Goldman Sach employees will be receiving the biggest bonus' in the 140 year old history of the company for 2009 on the taxpayers dime?

Is this a reason why the Print and Video --MSM--business are failing?
Why would news companies pay people to keep asking such trivial questions when important ones are hanging in the air waiting to be said... like Goldman Sachs, or the ongoing AIG/AIU ineptitude?
Or why not ask why the continuing foreclosure problem and the fact that in the past six weeks interest rates on home mortgages have gone up to near mid-2008 rates or what Obama's administration will do about these?

I am sorry he's still struggling with the addiction of tobacco. It is a tough one to lose. But it's not our business or concern unless it interferes with his ability to do his job.
Some "reporters-journalists" are so stupid.

Because, having passed the regulator's stress tests, Goldman Sachs paid back the Tarp funds it received and is operating entirely on private capital. Contrary to the Republican's propaganda machine the Obama Administration is reversing the Socialist actions taken by its predecessor.

This is utterly ridiculous. Who cares if the President smokes as long as he doesn't smoke in front of youngsters and teens!

Don't these "reporters" have anything a bit more important to ask?

People who are trying to quit smoking can be moody which may lead to lapses in judgment. I want my president to have a steady hand. So smoke away, if you must, Mr. President.

Where was the "peanut gallery" when during the collapse of the nation's financial system, President Bush's schedule was blanked out several days a week. Did it occur the the Press Corp to ask if he was still drinking. Alcoholism isn't a curable disease and he was photographed during that time drinking at one of his out of the country excursions. I assume the boys and girls had concluded that he couldn't perform any worse drunk than he did sober.

The press NEVER asked the type of questions of Boooosh as they are asking of President Obama.
Where was the press when Booosh spent over 25 MILLION dollars for his trips on Air Force One for his vacations and trips to Crawford Ranch and Kennebunkport ?
Where was the press when Booosh was drinking?
Where was the press when he took us into an illegal 'undeclared' WAR ?
Where was the press when he did cocaine in the WH when his dad was president?
Where was the press when Booosh spent $500+ per bottle of wine at the WH state dinners?
Where was the press when Booosh had Air Force One fly his twins all over the USA and overseas?
Uggh.... it is sooooo very frustrating!

He was drinking . . . he admitted to drinking "non-alcoholic" beer. There's no such thing as "non-alcoholic" beer . . . it all has some alcohol in it . . . non-treated alcoholics drink it to get their fix, while denying they are drinking. I've seen it firsthand with a family member. He went into treatment and they told him that he could not touch non-alcoholic beer, EVER.

What planet are today's journalists from? Who cares? Or more to the point, someone who cares should not be allowed around sharp objects, let alone asking questions of the president.

Why? Obama knows smoking is bad. He knows it's addictive -- and how. Quitting is his personal demon to conquer. He signed the legislation giving the FDA regulatory authority. I just wish him luck in conquering the demon tobacco.
