I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Obama

There was no shortage of news on Sunday, with an uprising in Iran approaching new levels of violence, nuclear brinkmanship in North Korea, and crisis in health care reform.

One of the most frequent questions asked at the daily press briefing at the White House, however, was a bit more personal: Was President Obama still smoking cigarettes?

Earlier in the day, the president had signed an anti-smoking bill that gave the Food and Drug Administration more authority to regulate cigarette sales and advertising. And in the process, the president referenced his own struggles as a smoker -- which he said he gave up during the presidential campaign.

"Each day, 1,000 young people under the age of 18 become new, regular, daily smokers, and almost 90 percent of all smokers began at or before their 18th birthday," said the president. "I know. I was one of these teenagers. And so I know how difficult it can be to break this habit when it's been with you for a long time."

Hours later, in between a host of questions on weighty international and domestic topics, the press flexed its curiosity. Four separate times, Press Secretary Robert Gibs was asked whether Obama was still smoking or, by extension, why he wasn't more autobiographical in his remarks.

From the White House transcript come the following exchanges:

Q: And just quickly, could you be more clear than you have been about whether the President does still occasionally continue smoking?

MR. GIBBS: I haven't probed any deeper than the statements that I've given you all in the past several days, that, as he has told me, it's something that he continues to struggle with as somebody -- like millions of Americans have.

Q : Robert, just to follow up on Jennifer's question on smoking, why haven't you probed the President on his smoking habits?

MR. GIBBS: Just hasn't crossed my mind.

Story continues below
advertisement

Q: I mean, it just seems to me like today it would have been a good explanation point at the end to say, you know, I had this habit and I kicked the habit --

MR. GIBBS: Well, Dan --

Q: -- if in fact that's what he's done.

MR. GIBBS: I think that anybody that -- I'm not a smoker, I don't -- it's probably just one vice I don't have. I think the President has on any number of occasions discussed the struggle that -- the vice of smoking, what's that done to him and that he struggles with it every day. I don't honestly see the need to get a whole lot more specific than the fact that it's a continuing struggle.

Q: If I could ask one more thing on smoking. During the campaign, the President -- then-senator at the time -- and Mrs. Obama went on "60 Minutes" and used his smoking as part of his biography, as part of his sort of campaign narrative, if you will. He has used his biography in many ways. Why not use this as an opportunity, if he has or if he hasn't quit smoking, to discuss this with the American people or even offer a warning to young children about smoking?

MR. GIBBS: Well, again, I think he was fairly forward today in discussing the fact that this is, as I've said throughout the last couple of weeks, something that he continues to struggle with.

Q: No, he used about eight words in his speech, though, as opposed to saying something that --

MR. GIBBS: I don't know what the appropriate word count would have been in order to check the box. And, again, I think the President spoke about this in personal terms, regardless of the word count.

Q: Is it something that still aggravates him, when he's asked about this?

MR. GIBBS: Maybe I should give you that opportunity to ask tomorrow. (Laughter.)

Q: I did ask him, and he turned away -- walked away.

MR. GIBBS: Well, go figure.

Q: I'd just like to follow up on cigarettes. When you say he still struggles, does that mean he still smokes sometimes? Is that what that means?

MR. GIBBS: I'm not going to parse the President's words on this today.

Q: So those were not how he describes it?

MR. GIBBS: How did he say it today?

Q: He said, in the past, he had been one of the teenagers who had been -- or the current -- I just wanted to understand the --

MR. GIBBS
: Again, I think I said last week -- I'd have to go back and look at my exact statement -- but I got from him that obviously this is a struggle that he continues to have.

I demand to know WHAT the Press Corps is smoking.

LEAVE THE PRESIDENT ALONE.

My dad struggled most of his life with the habit that finally killed him; my brother is having the same problems. And y'know what? Nothing makes it more difficult than a bunch of idlots pestering a person.

Send the press corps back to Journalism school. We don't need the whole gang to sound like Faux News.

So, in short, we want you, Mr. President to:

(1) Get us out of Iraq without starting another unholy conflagration in the Middle East;
(2) Root the Taliban out of Afghanistan without pushing them further into nuclear Pakistan;
(3) Pull the economy out of the ditch that years of deregulation and lax securities-law enforcement has driven it into;
(4) Reform our squirrely health care system despite protestations from fat-cat insurance companies and all the politicians who are protesting on behalf of the fat-cat insurance companies (because those companies have bought the protesting politicians, body and soul);
(5) Fulfill the implicit promise from your campaign to recognize the equal rights of all men and women in the United States, regardless of their sexual orientation;
(6) Pull two of our domestic car companies back from the brink and, thereby, save countless jobs and the lifeblood of priceless small American towns and ...

Stop smoking (or at least tell us if you are still smoking so that we may criticize you for it).

Really?! In this age of crises piled upon chaos topped with an unhealthy dose of economic depression, we REALLY need to know every last granular detail? He doesn't abuse his children, he's faithful to his wife, he's got a cute dog ... but we still want to know MORE? WTF? Get a grip.

Focus on your own life and how he can help make your life better. But leave him a sliver of privacy.

Mr. President, just tell them you don't inhale. It worked for Bill . As far as cigars go well that's another story.

Whether or not President Obama sneaks a puff is the least of America's worries. Most smokers make more than one attempt at quitting, and they aren't even burdened with foreign wars, economic crisis, health care now-or-never, and a globe melting. They can just find out that their in-laws are coming to town and they're off in the garage exhaling into a crack in the wall and overdosing on mint gum to hide their crime ...... I do not care if he smokes. He should quit. He's trying. But by all means pile on some more pressure and he'll be off in the rose garden taking Bo for a walk he doesn't need, in the rain, just so he can inhale 3 Camels. At the same time.

And would to heaven that that Press Corp had asked the question once, twice, three times, worded it differently, tried once more when it came to WMD in Iraq. We might have a lot more people alive and a lot less nasty residuals like torture and wire tapping. But oh they're just suddenly Woodward and Bernstein when it comes to the great Ciger-gate.

Get off his back. Or we'll all need a cigarette.

Boy. That press corp on the job and working overtime on the big issues. Thank god. If it were not for them we might have invaded the wrong country, thought global warming was unrelated to fossil fuels, debated whether made up stuff like intelligent design was science, had an out of control health care industry because the media could not get tough with their biggest advertiser... Whoops.

It's possible to have a smoke, maybe even several in the same night - every few months or years - and not make it a nervous habit.

This is the second bizarre story of the day. The first was the missing S.C. Governor. Seriously, no wonder papers are on the decline if this is the best they can produce.

"They are badgering him on this- its embarassing!"

They are doing it out of contempt. People seem to want from this president things they never required from previous presidents.

Previous Presidents didn't endorse and sign bills giving the FDA regulatory authority to restrict a personal habit which they themselves are unwilling or unable to give up. Even for Obama devotees, doesn't this seem a bit hypocritical? Hopefully the President will not seek to impose any more personal preferences on everyone else, otherwise giving up things for Lent make take on a new intrusive meaning in America.

It is not hypocritical.
Obama has said he has quit smoking.
He was willing to stop and he has quit.
As far as the struggle to stay free of cigarettes - many people have that 'personal' battle to wage once they have stopped smoking and it is no ones business other than the person that has quit.
Cigarettes are still legal... regulations on sales and advertising will help keep the kids from smoking --- but adults are still free to do as they please.
Gotta go now and get a cig ;)

The government regulates the sale of alcoholic beverages via legislation.
That doesn't give the right to the press to hound government officials to make them state how many glases of wine they drink with dinner.

Robert Gibbs must have the patience of a saint.

Of all the questions in the world to hound on, the press is to low and base they focus on a personal habit of smoking. No indepth or oft repeated questions on health care reform, Iran, deaths of troops over the weekend, Don't Ask Don't Tell, education, jobs, etc.

The press briefings need to be stopped. The press is useless. Let the public ask questions instead. These guys are dunderheads.

PS: Who cares if the President smokes or not? Will that personally impact our economy or jobs or health care reform.

Arrrrrgh!

Gibbs get paid to answer questions from the press corps, not to "patiently" put up with what he considers irrelevant questions that he is free to ignore. Without press briefings, how would you propose the public might go about asking their own questions? Perhaps by submitting them to a WH website and hoping for a reply from some PR flack?

Obviously you have not been paying attention to some comments made on this thread. I am calling it like I see it. Maybe you fail to understand the underlying tone of some of the posts either because you aren't of that ilk or you are naive. I can't afford to allow some of what's been said to go unchallenged. You've got folks hating on Obama because he is a black man in the White House and their ridiculous comments reflect their attitudes. I made an observation just like you did in responding to my post. You have you views and I have mine.

Hey I got a couple of questions the Corp should entertain asking:

*Does he read when he's in the john?
*What kind of toilet paper does he use?
*How much paper does he use?
*How long does he stay in the john after he's finished?
*How often does he go to the john during the day?

See, sounds kind of ridiculous, but there will be some reporter that will dare to go there. Mark my word!

The press corp has NO RIGHT to demand anything from Our President.
Good lord you would think that they way they are acting that sneaking a cigarette is equal to committing a murder or something!
Cigarettes are a LEGAL product in the USA.
Gov. Arnold smokes cigars ...
People need to get a life !!!
