NEW YORK — Ryan O'Neal says he plans to marry Farrah Fawcett, who is struggling to overcome cancer. The 68-year-old actor says in an interview with Barbara Walters for ABC's "20/20" that he asked his longtime companion to marry him and "she's agreed." O'Neal says they will tie the knot "as soon as she can say yes."

Walters' interview with O'Neal airs Friday.

Fawcett was diagnosed in 2006 with anal cancer that has spread to her liver. The "Charlie's Angels" star and O'Neal have a 24-year-old son, Redmond.

O'Neal says the 62-year-old actress is "fighting for her life," but despite her declining health, they will "absolutely" get married.

Where was the dishonesty?

It was her choice to be with him, married or not.

It shows that marriage is more than "just a piece of paper."

Best wishes to them.

I wish Farrah would be miraculously cured.

I wish no one had to go through what I saw on her TV special.

I work at a level one trauma center; as JFaye said above, "No matter how long you live, life is short."

(Wear your seat belts, folks. I'm amazed how many traumatic brain injuries or deaths we see just because someone wasn't wearing their seatbelt.)

I don't understand the logic or timing.

Not to be snarky here -[ but what ddo you care when they get maried? Maybe it is one of her last wishes - as someone here said earlier - for once and all. If it gives her a little happiness and comfort - then why not?

Someimes the snarkiness and cynicism here is mind blowing.

You don't understand the logic and timing because your maturity has not reached that point. Be patient. One day you will.

These two never felt that they needed to "marry." They are marrying now to protect their son. He has drug problems, and without the marriage he would be her only heir. This way, she can leave the rights to her image ($$$) to Ryan and her son (in a trust probably). I'm sure the only thing she is thinking about right now is helping her child, and that Ryan will have final say over her last days. They've been on-again, off-again, but in their hearts, these two married long ago.

This woman always seemed to live a "charmed" life. Beauty, riches, fame - it still stands that the most precious gift we have is our health.

She can leave her rights to her image to her son without marriage. She's free to do whatever she wishes w/ her assets, married or not. She can put it in trust to her son w/ Ryan O'Neal's management for safe keeping. Seems the marriage is for sentimental purposes. O'Neal has said he's more in love w/ her now than ever before so he simply wants to do what most men do when the love so deeply: Marry.

Incredible that O'Neal is playing out one of his most memorable movie roles, "Love Story." And in real life it's similar to the movie: Guy loses gal. Never know when you look at (or portray) someone else's life you just may be witnessing (or portraying) your own.

Don't have much, but just got a prenup. All you 40something women out there who are thinking about marriage and have children and property, get a prenup.

have to think this marriage is as much for her estate than anything... Would think that her entire estate would go to Redmond not Ryan if they are not married.....

Unless Farrah Fawcett can come out of her catatonic drug-induced state, there is no way she can agree to a marriage. She is completely unable to comprehend what is going on around her and her cancer has taken its toll. While this marriage does seem to be a wonderful idea, the "proposal" may have been to keep Farrah's spirits up and nothing more. I only wish Ryan had thought of this solution before Farrah was at the worst of her situation. I've prayed for Farrah's comfort and ease in this time, as I've prayed for the same for my Father who is also dying and in the same situation. It's all any of us can do...

Living with death (pending) we all see life through a different glass.

Good luck to both of them. I agree with you, however, having experienced a cancer-death with my dad a few years back, she is in all likelihood not lucid enough for the marriage to stand up in court if the legality becomes an issue when settling her estate.

No matter how long you live, life is short.

I don't really have an opinion on their decision, but I find it curious - Why now?

What could make it important now if it never was before. Interesting.

Maybe "before" this just wasn't something they wanted to do.

Times change.....people change.....their reasons are their own.

Interesting how these boards allow complete strangers to butt into other people's business. As someone said above, the best thing to do is pray for a peaceful transition.

Nice gesture- but very sad they had to wait until she was on her death bed- The entire point of marriage is for better or worse " together". What is the point really NOW? To die with his name?

As their relationship lasted longer than most marriages, maybe they had more of a relationship than most people.

They were a good couple. I knew her when our kids were in preschool together.
