NEW YORK — Ryan O'Neal says he plans to marry Farrah Fawcett, who is struggling to overcome cancer. The 68-year-old actor says in an interview with Barbara Walters for ABC's "20/20" that he asked his longtime companion to marry him and "she's agreed." O'Neal says they will tie the knot "as soon as she can say yes."

Walters' interview with O'Neal airs Friday.

Fawcett was diagnosed in 2006 with anal cancer that has spread to her liver. The "Charlie's Angels" star and O'Neal have a 24-year-old son, Redmond.

O'Neal says the 62-year-old actress is "fighting for her life," but despite her declining health, they will "absolutely" get married.

Deathbed marriages are sometimes performed for purely spiritual reasons.

You all seem to be foregetting one major issue, if he is her husband, then he will be the final authority to execute her wishes. Sure, there are medical powers of attorney, but if I understand correctly, those can be contested and fought over. This will simplify things, and might give her the sense of comfort she needs. They have been together a long time. This might be her way of ensuring that her wishes are followed.

My heart goes out for all of them in such a tragic time.

As for the people being negative about this......come on, guys....

let them live in piece.....let herdie in piece (when the time comes).

If this wouldn't have been what he wanted, he wouldn't have asked her.....and if she wasn't happy about it she wouldn't have said yes.

Apparently they both needed this. So.....how can anyone judge?

wish them the best, but, wondering why they didn't choose to get hitched a while back, before all the attention that is now being paid, people have a right to be somewhat cynical about this, imo, especially given their very tumultuous past

I agree rocketdog. I am a fan of Farrah's. I certainly wish her and Ryan all the best. It's just that after all this time, not wanting to get married, it just seems a little overboard, based on their history together.

If a child doesn't cause you to want to get married, why should anything else. But, of course, this is just one woman's opinion.

LiberalBuzz :
Uncalled for and mean spirited.

All of this shallow angst and compassion is truly humorous !

Of all the things this couple could be doing, ie: working with hospice patients, children, and those is filthy nursing homes also dying of cancer, this couple chooses wholly shallow and inappropriate self-promotion !

And being of the identical mindset, you clowns lap-it-up !

My guess is any compassion anyone feels will be viewed by you as humourous ... given that it's a quality you seem to lack.

I thought republicans were all for individual freedom. What makes it your business how anyone else chooses to spend their time?

I'm just saying.

Wow. I am so sorry that you are so bitter and hateful. Whatever happened to you that made you this way, you have my sympathy.

i think farrah might be a little too "under the weather" for all of that, einstein. also, your mean-spirited rant indicates you may need to "tend to your own back yard" and quit your lame attempt at pontificating to the rest of us.

You should seek Ryan out and let him know your feelings first hand. You might have a little more respect afterward.

Too bad we have to have to be exposed to such a c r e e p as you! Such negativity about the life of a dying woman is what is shallow and inappropriate.

why all of the negativity. he has shown throughout her illness to be loving and supportive. i think if my partner of a long time, who was also the mother of my son was dying, i would want to "cement" the relationship. it seems they have grown closer and he has been by her side throughout. why not get married? it is tragically romantic, and it creates and immortality to their relationship.

Says a lot about the sort of person who would post anything negative regarding this story.

Redmond is their son, fool. He is also in jail on drug charges. Do you think Redmond will spend her money on charity?

After 30 years together you don't need a piece of paper to know you love and are committed to one another. They must know she is near the end and they need to secure his inheritance rights. This is so heartbreaking.

Poignant, poignant, poignant.

Oliver Barrett IV:
"What can you say about a twenty-five-year-old girl who died? That she was beautiful and brilliant? That she loved Mozart and Bach, the Beatles, and me?"
