Obama

Godwin's Law proves itself again! This time from a reportedly prominent GOP group in Maryland, the Republican Women of Anne Arundel County (as ThinkProgress reported today). On their website, they've published a letter from their president addressing Obama's alleged Health Care agenda, and equating the President with Hitler.

The Letter begins:

Dear Friends:

Obama and Hitler have a great deal in common in my view. Obama and Hitler use the "blitzkrieg" method to overwhelm their enemies. FAST, CARPET BOMBING intent on destruction. Hitler's blitzkrieg bombing destroyed many European cities - quickly and effectively. Obama is systematically destroying the American economy and with it AMERICA. First the banking/investment industry, next private enterprise (GM and Chrysler) and now HEALTH CARE.

We too CAN fight back. Contact everyone you know. Start a blitzkrieg of our own. Shut down the Capitol switchboards and the White House switchboards! Say NO to the Obamination of Obama Care!

Actually "blitzkrieg" has nothing to do with carpet bombing, it refers to a rapidly advancing mechanized assault at a specific point in the enemy line that becomes a flank attack once the line has been successfully breached. It was a tactic born of necessity, insofar as the Germans were chronically undersupplied and lacked the logistical support to sustain a battle of attrition. Charging the enemy line hellbent for bongoburgers was about the only viable option they had in the early years.

RWT 1138 is correct. This past weekend, I was at the U.S. Military Academy and I visited the West Point Museum where, much to my surprise, I found a description of "Blitzkrieg" in their World War II display. The term means "lightning war" and was predicated on speed. The strategy was to avoid portions of the enemies' lines that had built-up defenses; rather, the intention was to strike at weak points on the flanks, as RWT1138 accurately described, with lightning speed and aim for the destruction of headquarters and command and control centers.

I feel the same term also has applicability in the realm of political warfare as well. A massing of operatives and party members to attack the opposition with a mass of force and lightning speed at unprotected flanks of the opposition, aiming for a headquarters or a command and control center is, indeed, a "Blitzkrieg."

I sent the following email to:info@rwaac.com

I included her quote but its too long to include in this post.

Dear Mrs. Thomann:

As a former resident of the great State of Maryland from the age of 6 to the age of 46, I am very ashamed to day to have been a resident of that state.

Your comments comparing President Obama to Hitler and the Blitzkreig wer completely uncalled for and out of line-

It is good to have different views as we do not want a monolithic country, however, you as a leader should not use your position of power to insert fear and make inane comparisons to the most evil ruler of all time.

I believe that you should apologize for this ridiculous comment. You owe an apology to the citizens of America and to the citizens of the United States.

If you must use such horrific tactics to make a point perhaps someone else should have your position of leadership.

You have put shame upon a great State today.

Good letter.

I, too, am a former resident of the Old Line State and of AA County. I'm furious with Mrs. Thomann and intend to write her as well.

Ah, the old reductio ad Hitlerum argument. It's really a stretch to compare the self-professed leader of the White master race with a Black man. Not to mention the stretch in comparing bombing campaigns with healthcare plans.

It is ludicrous. Unfortunately, the GOP is working tirelessly to slander President Obama and render him unable to accomplish anything that the American people elected him to do.

Most of their slanders however.. have yet to work very well. Only he can destroy himself. And sadly, if he does not embrace the promises he made on the campaign trail.. he will do just that.

As I have written before, "Joyce Thomann is, perhaps, the most prolific writer I know. …and everything she writes is a call to action!"

Although many may find her analogies offensive, there is no "Godwin's Law" for Sun Tzu, von Clausewitz or the Powell Doctrine of overwhelming force due to the fact that neither Republicans nor Democrats, in general, posses the depth of knowledge to discuss or invoke them with any consequence. While they could have more accurately described Ms. Thomann's positions, they wouldn't have raised the emotional temperature in either Democrats or Republicans to the level that she has done. She has, once again, given us all a call to action and several have responded.

Her use of the term "blitzkrieg” to describe the speed and rapidity in which the Obama administration is leading us down a road of quasi-socialism with added government intervention (which I personally find an anathema to my own political sensibilities), is not completely without merit. Her use of the same term to urge Republicans to call the switchboards, I feel, is inaccurate. What I believe she is describing is a practical, political application of some aspects of the Powell Doctrine of overwhelming force (see http://townhall.com/columnists/CharlesKrauthammer/2001/04/20/the_powell_doctrine ).

If you were personally offended by Ms. Thomann's evocation, as a member of RWAAC, I can assure you that was not her intent. But one thing is for sure. Once again:

SHE GOT EVERYONE'S ATTENTION !!!

To compare a sitting president, Democrat or Republican, is wrong. Instead of a call to action, she's feeding fear and encouraging hate. Not the kind of attention that she should be getting.

I expect more from any resident of the county in which I raised.

She got everyone's attention, but it's negative attention. If Thoman wants her group to play on the national stage, she'll have to be smarter. Let me lay this out for you: there is a widespread belief in this country that the Republican Party doesn't have room for anyone who is not rich, white and Christian. It's a stereotype, and perhaps an unfair one, but it is one you have to combat intelligently. Throwing around a loaded word like 'blitzkrieg' is on par with throwing around a word like 'lyn.ch.ing'. Thoman comes off as ig.nor.ant of how the word will be received, which in turn makes her seem like someone who only wants rich white Christians in her group. That will be the end of the party. Yes, she has our attention, alright.

You have no idea what you are talking about and are using hate speech as a "call for action". And what type of action would you like to see happen?

I suppose you have forgotten the "action" we had in DC, JUST OVER TWO WEEKS AGO, where a security guard at the Holocaust Museum, a FATHER nonetheless, lost his life due to action called by your party. Your organization have shown your true colors and they are ugly and full of hate.

Regardless of what you think of President Obama's policies, comparing him to Hitler is ignorant and makes Marylanders look like fools. You have resorted to dirty politics which has done nothing but tarnish the reputation of the rest of AA County that does not agree with you. I'm sorry that you have chosen to agree and back Ms. Thomann's opinions instead of distancing yourself like the GOP and Republicans of Maryland that have already condemned her behavior.

With over 500,000 e-mail messages to the RWAAC web site, several phone calls and death threats to some of their members of RWAAC, articles in at least three Maryland newspapers, over 600 comments to two articles in "The Huffington Post" and a citing by Keith "What's-his-name" on MSNBC that Joyce is "The Worst Person in the World," the Left has proven it can mount an effective "Blitzkrieg" of its own by using social networking media to organize itself. If only the Right was equally as effective with these tools. And that was Joyce's point -- a call to arms for the Right to be as effective as you have been through this particular demonstration of skill and ability.

I have personally encouraged Joyce to establish a blog that is independent of RWAAC or any other organization. She -- in and of herself -- is a formidable and forceful voice and I, for one, look forward to the day when she will take on "The Huffington Post," "The Daily Kos" and Keith & Rachael with glee while typing with one hand tied behind her back. She has the ability to make Samuel Adams of the Revolutionary War sound like a shy choirboy.

If you were offended by her remarks -- sorry. You only hit the tip of the iceberg. Let me encourage you to dig a little deeper.
