Obama

Godwin's Law proves itself again! This time from a reportedly prominent GOP group in Maryland, the Republican Women of Anne Arundel County (as ThinkProgress reported today). On their website, they've published a letter from their president addressing Obama's alleged Health Care agenda, and equating the President with Hitler.

The Letter begins:

Dear Friends:

Obama and Hitler have a great deal in common in my view. Obama and Hitler use the "blitzkrieg" method to overwhelm their enemies. FAST, CARPET BOMBING intent on destruction. Hitler's blitzkrieg bombing destroyed many European cities - quickly and effectively. Obama is systematically destroying the American economy and with it AMERICA. First the banking/investment industry, next private enterprise (GM and Chrysler) and now HEALTH CARE.

We too CAN fight back. Contact everyone you know. Start a blitzkrieg of our own. Shut down the Capitol switchboards and the White House switchboards! Say NO to the Obamination of Obama Care!

This is so incredibly ridiculous. Obama has been in office for 6 months - hardly enough time to correct all the problems caused by the previous administration. Obama is tackling tough problems that no one else has the guts to tackle. His solutions may not be perfect, but we'll be better off than we are today. Mark my words.

Obama wants to provide a public healthcare option, just like Hitler wanted to kill Jews?

And the Republicans wonder why they are losing elections?

One must not forget that Hitler and National Socialism lifted a prostrate Germany (no gold, no foreign exchange, no credit) from the ashes of World War I to become the 1930's economic engine of the world. He did it with oratory and charisma just as Barrack is attempting. Hitler though had the advantage of not being surrounded by Mosaics.

So, though, if f he's like Hitler, which one, early or late?

Reflect on this: Churchill, in 1937, wrote in his book Great Contemporaries, ‘One may dislike Hitler’s system and yet admire his patriotic achievement. If our country were defeated, I hope we should find a champion as indomitable to restore our courage and lead us back to our place among the nations.'

It is the method of making statements without any definition or showing plans. Germans were desperate for their economy to improve, once elected that other guy all but destroyed the economy and then told them that he was the one that could fix it. He told them that you take the money from those that have it (you know who) and give it to those that don't. The public bought it and for their support, they were impoverished to the point of star vation. The people that pay attention to history can see things that are familiar. The people that don't pay attention, get the rest of us in trubble.

Blitzkreig was not about carpet bombing nor about mass destruction. As a matter of fact, blitzkreig was about intense focus and then fast movement. It's operational in nature and not thought of as a strategic methodology.

Now, if you want to talk about carpet bombing and total destruction of cities, we can talk about B-52 carpet bombing in Vietnam, the fire-bombing of Dresden, or the bombing of London, but since blitzkreig has little to do with carpet bombing, these are only here for contrast. Of course, nothing says total city destruction like Hiroshima.

Of course, now that we're done with the history and military short course, how about we focus on the fact that the letter seems to do what we've come to expect from GOP correspondence/inaction: 1) a personal attack, 2) a means for obstruction, and 3) no inkling of anything that THEY are proposing to do themselves with the exception of saying "no" and getting in the way.

Actually you would be wrong Foxbat about your definition of Blitzkreig. Historically, it was everything about carpet bombing and the mass destruction of the enemy. You should consider looking at the Polish campaign and the German attack on Russia.

Actually, if you are focusing on blitzkreig with regard to the German assault in Poland, then you have a misunderstanding of the blitzkreig tactic. Also, if you believe that its solely German-based, then again, your definition is wrong. True blitzkreig is associated with quick, focused strike and then quicker movements through the breach to disrupt supply lines and support. Incidentally, the blitzkreig technique first came about toward the middle of WWI, so focusing solely on WWII misses a lot of the nuance of blitzkreig.

The problem is that journalists and armchair military fans used the term blitzkrieg incorrectly with the Polish campaign and the terminology, incorrectly, stuck. Kind of like people who talk about an army being "decimated" in battle. Decimation is a form a punishment enacted by the Romans to punish those engaged in mutiny/cowardice with their ranks whereas every tenth soldier in a groupings was executed. As such, the use of the term by sportscaster today who talk about a team being decimated in the big game is also incorrect unless the coach took the losing players out and had a tenth of them executed after the big game.

Looks like HuffPo didn't like my last response, so I'll try again. I'm VERY familiar with military definitions. If the focus is on Poland, then the use of blitzkreig is incorrect. Blitzkrieg in its purist form is about specific focus and not widespread wanton destruction which carpet bombing is about. It's also about quick exploitation of the breech of the focus and the quick movement to disrupt supply lines and re-support usually very fast and with a sometimes dangerous disregard for protecting ones own potentially vulnerable flanks.

The problem with the term blitzkreig is that it's been co-opted by journalists, at its ealiest inception, and arm-chair military strategists. It's like the term "decimate." People always talk about a team being decimated by another team in the playoffs, but decimation was originally a Roman punishment for cowardice/mutiny that resulted in a tenth of a selected group of soldiers being executed, typically by the other members of the group. As such, another military-related term is often not understood by the general population ... unless of course, after a loss in the playoffs, the coach takes the team out in the parking lot and executes a tenth of them.

Perfesser, I think you be wrong there. The attack on Russia was the antithesis of blitzkreig: so slow they didn't get to Moscow. Blitzkreig, that is, lightening warfare, was employed in Poland, but it didn't involve carpet bombing or mass destruction, just very rapid deployment of the war machine. But don't take my word for it. Go look it up.

No carpet bombing involved in either of those offensives. The German's actually did not have the capabilities to perform carpet bombing - they had no heavy bombers.

Sorry :-).

Just hate when I see folks, especially conservatives, toss out words like "appeasement" and "blitzkreig" and "fascism" and try to make statements about Orwell or Rand to attack Democrats and do it without understanding what the words or concepts mean.

I appreciate good satire ... and irony ... the main irony was tonight on Countdown, Olbermann had a picture of the head of the Maryland group. She looked like she was old enough to have dated Hitler, so perhaps maybe she has a point :-).

Lord, I apologize for that ... Larry the Cable Guy

From one fascist state to another. The problem with the GOP is they're not very good at book learnin'. They don't get the fact that THEY are the fascists (corporatists, nationalists, monotheists); us liberals are the socialists. How many times do we have to say it?
