Obama

Godwin's Law proves itself again! This time from a reportedly prominent GOP group in Maryland, the Republican Women of Anne Arundel County (as ThinkProgress reported today). On their website, they've published a letter from their president addressing Obama's alleged Health Care agenda, and equating the President with Hitler.

The Letter begins:

Dear Friends:

Obama and Hitler have a great deal in common in my view. Obama and Hitler use the "blitzkrieg" method to overwhelm their enemies. FAST, CARPET BOMBING intent on destruction. Hitler's blitzkrieg bombing destroyed many European cities - quickly and effectively. Obama is systematically destroying the American economy and with it AMERICA. First the banking/investment industry, next private enterprise (GM and Chrysler) and now HEALTH CARE.

We too CAN fight back. Contact everyone you know. Start a blitzkrieg of our own. Shut down the Capitol switchboards and the White House switchboards! Say NO to the Obamination of Obama Care!

As a member of high school forensics, I have learned the proper way to argue an issue and the various improper ways to argue an issue. Ad hominem attacks are the most glaring example of how NOT to argue an issue. Republicans do this all the damn time! The lowest common denominator, of course, is to find a comparison between an everyday issue (i.e. President Obama fixing our broken health care system) and something from history that was really, really bad. It's always a completly and throughly inaccurate comparison, but it's the only way they know to score points. It's easier to make attacks and criticize opponents than it is to propose your own policy, your own way to fix the situation. Unfortunatly for these bitter Republican women, they would go down in any debate with a high school student.

Well, you are failing to take into account the target audience. Our voters and especially our citizens with the free time to pester congressmen are the lowest common denominator.

Republican style attacks have already failed to convince anyone with a 10th grade reading level. Unfortunately, I think our voters probably average a 9th grade reading level. Too bad we cannot bring back the voter literacy tests of the 19th century.

If the Republican party had any credibility at all, they too would denounce this kind of ignorant behaviour. But of course they are without credibility, conscience or even intelligence. They have become the lowest of the low.

What do you think? Do these GOPers have their own bedrooms separate from their husband's or do they have single beds in the same room ala "Leave It To Beaver"?

I am not sure which is worse, Repubs, or their women. Now before you jump on me, I am not demeaning women. Most liberal or democratic women have the ability to think and communicate effectively, but it seems like every time a Repub woman opens her mouth she can barely connect the faulty logic they use to form a cohesive statement. It is sad really. Learn to think for yourself.

wink, wink, smile, nod, smile.

They sure do like to pitch temper trantrums, don't they? I guess that since we elected our President by a very large margin, we must all be nazis. What they call one of us, they call all of us. Funny, I thought we were American voters. Makes you wonder what they are. There are words to describe them but I don't think they can be posted.

WHAT?! Hitler? Really? REALLY?!

I'll give them an A for khutzpah. They do the comparison in the first line. They don't even build up to it.

And, FYI, there is NOTHING that Obama can do to make US healthcare worse than it is. It's terrible.

In Maryland, or just off the DC Beltway? Care to peacefully protest?

RWAAC—Republican Women of Anne Arundel County. Meets Wednesdays in Annapolis. Visit http://www.rwaac.com to check out their calendar, show up and peacefully, respectfully protest.

But hey, remember, if you go, or call, or write, be cool. This is a free country, and they have every right to their absurd, destructive opinions. Can't be cool? Be cooler: I think it would be fun to go undercover, pretend to be absurd and destructive, and see how far you can take it. Go to the meeting, and report a rumor you "heard" that President Obama has an SS tattoo, and is planning to grow a Hitler mustache. Keep going. "Report" that not one single Jew voted for Obama, and that Obama is considering invading Poland this fall.

Remember the group's acronym is: rwaac. Start a rallying cry: " We r waac, we are wack..."

Thanks for the link. I just HAD TO tell them that I support the President and abhor their bad mouthing of him. If they have a solution to the healthcare crisis, then they should offer it up. If not, then they should stay out of the way and let the President get it done. Do they honestly believe that companies are going to offer health insurance as a benefit indefinitely with its rising price tag? They are fools if they believe that is going to true long-term. So many people who are lucky enough to have good employer offered health insurance could care less about those of us who have no insurance or who work for an employer who cannot afford to offer a decent health insurance plan. In this great Nation it should not be a matter of how lucky you are in your employment as to whether or not you have affordable and effective health coverage. Healthcare needs to be affordable and available to all Americans regardless of their employment status.

Thanks for this idea. It can be very effective if you do it right. If someone is filming it you can really go viral w/the deep detail that they don't have time for on commercial television. Like the guy w/the curious george doll at the McCain rally.

Kevin Smith did the same thing when church groups protested Dogma. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5UDoIBgiUAQ
Here's the actual protest. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QepgKVOVfZ8&feature=related

They are proving the point against them. I have met so many republicans who are embarrassed to admit it.

just sent this off.

Dear Fellow Residents of Ann Arundle County,
In reading the news this morning I came across an article describing a woman's GOP group using inflammatory hyperbole to highlight their opposition to President Obama's health care bill. I was shocked and frankly very embarrassed to find that this group meets in my hometown of Eastport! Although you can of course disagree all you like with the President's plans for health care, I would implore you, as a fellow resident of AAC, to keep the level of discussion to a civilized and mature level.

Obama has much in common with various charismatic people in history. We consider Hitler in the context of history (looking back) but he wasn't always regarded as vile. Fascism had a much more favorable light back then and was decided against post WWII. These comparisons aren't necessarily wrong historically but aren't socially acceptable either if we consider how we feel about Hitler now.

However, Obama's swift movement through legislation is cause for concern for the very same reason the blitzkrieg tactics were successful. The Blitzkrieg denied opposing forces time to organize an defend. Politically perhaps this sounds appropriate if the enemy is another political party such as the Republican Party. The problem is that regardless of political affiliation the American people lose when legislation is proposed, marked, and passed without giving time for proper review and ratification. It is cause for great concern that our representatives are voting for legislation they haven't read.

The very fact that a party has to use light speed to pass legislation after legislation in rapid fire mode indicates that the party (democrat or republican) is trying to circumvent public opinion, our opinion, ...the people. Doesn't that seem a bit wrong when we consider how much weight is carried by recently proposed legislation?

Lovey, public opinion is crystal clear on the issue of healthcare reform and a public option -- 72% of us support it. If the Congress would spend less time on camera and more time in their office, then they would have time to read legislation.

Oh, oh, oh - here we go again - the Hitler comparison. Can't the GOP come up something besides name calling - and, if not, at least something ORIGINAL?

As a Jewish woman, living In Anne Arundel County, MD, I want to tell the Republican Woman's organization (and particularly their president) how offensive I find her remarks. I'm so tired of people equating everything they don't like to Hitler and his policies. So you have any idea how that trivializes the loss of 9 million people, men, women, and children - 2/3 of whom were murdered because they were Jewish or of Jewish ancestry.

If you disagree with President Obama's programs to turn this nation around, if you don't like the way that he conducts either foreign or domestic policy, if you don't like the color of his tie, or what he named his dog it is certainly your right - even more, it's your responsibility as a citizen of these United States - to speak up. However, if you plan on conducting a public debate on these (or any other issues) try to learn how to do it without debasing yourselves or insulting your neighbors.

Godwin's law: "The rule does not make any statement about whether any particular reference or comparison to AdoIf HitIer or the N@zis might be appropriate, but only asserts that the likelihood of such a reference or comparison arising increases as the discussion progresses. It is precisely because such a comparison or reference may sometimes be appropriate, Godwin has argued, that overuse of N@zi and HitIer comparisons should be avoided, because it robs the valid comparisons of their impact."

Now, I don't want to become your teacher, but this means that overuse of a N@zi analogy lessens the impact of a coinciding situation. I have never seen overuse of this analogy, in fact only seen it with Obama. I would have included how he dupes everyone with his "magnificent speaking abilities," which both shared. They were both able to turn people into clay in their hands, to be molded however they pleased.
