LOS ANGELES — Social-networking site MySpace said Tuesday it plans to cut 300 jobs, or two-thirds of its overseas work force, in an effort to rein in costs and focus on countries where it has many users and better business opportunities.

The move comes a week after the News Corp. unit said it would cut 420 jobs in the U.S., or nearly 30 percent of its domestic work force. Combined, the cuts will reduce MySpace's employee base by nearly 40 percent to about 1,150.

"Our goal to tap into as many international markets as possible drove us to create too many offices around the globe, and with them came inefficiencies," Chief Executive Owen Van Natta, a former executive at rival Facebook, said in a memo sent to employees Tuesday.

Van Natta, 39, started in his new job in April with a mandate to revitalize the site, which has seen its advertising revenues fall and its user growth stagnate. Critics have said its features have become outdated even as it ramped up a music service with the major recording labels last fall.

MySpace said it would close at least four of its 15 overseas offices, while focusing on London, Berlin and Sydney as the main regional hubs. MySpace has 34 localized versions in 28 countries.

MySpace China and MySpace Japan, a joint venture with Japanese Internet company Softbank Corp., would not be affected by the plan, but the company is reviewing its offices in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, France, India, Italy, Mexico, Russia, Sweden, and Spain.

The company has been trying to trim its payroll, bringing its staffing level more in line with its more popular rival, Facebook.

As of May, Facebook said it had about 850 employees worldwide, the vast majority in the United States. While it is available in nearly 100 languages _ largely translated for free by its users _ Facebook has only five overseas offices, in Paris, London, Dublin, Toronto and Sydney.

Before the latest cuts, MySpace employed nearly 1,900 worldwide.

Recent data from tracking firm comScore shows Facebook has caught up with MySpace in monthly U.S. visitors for the first time, with about 70 million each.

MySpace has had difficulty growing its user base, which stands at about 125 million worldwide. Meanwhile Facebook has said that its usage has doubled to more than 200 million in less than a year.

While Facebook grew quickly overseas because of its one-size-fits-all design and user-generated translations, MySpace's focus on music and culture and the creation of individual country sites may have slowed it down, said Charlene Li, the founder of consulting firm Altimeter Group.

"It's hard to expand internationally," Li said. "It's a very cultural approach. What plays in the U.S. won't necessarily play in other countries."

As an example of the difficulty of adapting to local cultures, the company launched MySpace Music in the U.S. in September, but still hasn't come through on plans to spread it abroad. Elsewhere, MySpace has developed features and identified content partners tailored to specific markets, an endeavor that requires time and money.

The vast majority of both companies' advertising revenues come from the U.S., according to research firm eMarketer. Neither company discloses such figures.

Last year, MySpace made an estimated $585 million in ad revenue domestically and $20 million overseas, while Facebook took in $210 million at home and $40 million abroad, eMarketer said. In 2009, MySpace's ad revenue is expected to shrink while Facebook's grows.

Van Natta told employees in his memo that MySpace was focused on London, Berlin and Sydney because of their countries' large user bases and the company's ability to compete.

"These are major international commerce centers where a robust MySpace presence can help our company develop new and innovative business partnerships," he said.

News Corp. shares gained 6 cents to close at $10.17 on Tuesday.

It was cool in the beginning... However most musicians have taste and myspace clearly doesn't. Now every time people want to hear my band they have to visit the Men's room in a Minneapolis airport first! Get the picture? Not.

It's really not so surprising. I mean, how much ad space would YOU buy to reach an audience in Lower Slaobovistan or East Chukaboogaville? The happy natives and low-wage work force will be glad to use your product for free, but don't expect them to start paying money for whatever you're selling. So much for capturing "efficiences" on the cheap, hmm?

MySpace died because the people who wrote it, wrote it badly. Under the hood it's spaghetti code, and they sold the nasty mess to Murdoch for millions. then they had to make it work, and make it upgradeable.

The code was junk, so it needed a ground up re-write. They did an OK job, but it wasn't sufficiently tested given the range of nasty stupid things people could do to the design of the page and the ad serving structure. By that time, Facebook was nipping at their heels, and rather than fix the underlying problems, they went for "featuritis" and specialised in being the front end for musicians. Another miserable failure, as musicians were limited on how many tracks they could upload into their online jukebox, which was a DESIGN problem - it was designed to fail.

Myspace deserves to die, and Facebook is learning from all of their mistakes...

Rule #1: don't let the public design anything. The results will always be broken and ugly.

Rule #2: be broad not narrow.

Rule #3: play to win.

Ad revenue or investment in "conditioning minds for the future" and hoping things work out?

Change, hope and jobs were last seen in a Ford doing 90 heading to rave by the Bushies.. They didn't see the "trickle down" greed tree that jumped out and totaled it. Then they tossed the keys to Obama and said "you fix it".

I thought this was a topic on myspace not the obama administration! It seems to me that President Obama had been nothing but completely clear with what he was expecting with the economy, it is going to get worse before it gets better. That being said, lets think about WHEN the economy started to decline.

I will say that I am not very happy with Obama right now because his false claims to the LGBT community. He needs to be better with my civil rights.

Not to mention the Murdock "dating ads" are noting less then obnoxious. I + 40 Million other males don't care to see androgynous boys writhing around in front of a web cam practicing their "come hither" looks each and EVERY time it's launched. I'm sure the girls are just as bummed...

Well Rupert Murdock bought it and turned it into a commercial dumpster. It's about as fun to visit as a say... a dark subway platform soaked in ur.ine and corporate graffiti like McD's arches Chase Bank ads.

It still amazes me that MySpace has (had) 1000+ employees. It is one of the most poorly implemented sites on all the internets. What are all those people doing?

Absolutely! MySpace's evolution was solely in the marketing and artist relationship aspects. The core product and experience of MySpace is the same as it ever was, obsolete many times over.

Friends don't let friends MySpace.

Can these laid off people post their resume on MySpace, or will they have to use a social networking site built for grown-ups?

Moms are to blame for the MySpace problem

If they would have capped the age limit at 30, they would have continued to grow but the facebook model is so much more attractive to people who don't want mom reading whatever they post. Mom can't get in unless you invite her in (it's the vampire model of social networking and it works)

It's a bit horrifying to learn that when you post something, your mom and aunts can see it and then they can click on all of your myspace friends posts and read your comments there. As a considerate mom, I didn't ever do that but my son was a bit freaked out when one of my sisters commented on something he'd written on one of his myspace friends spaces.... he fled and has been happily on facebook since then, turning down friend requests from family members. :)

No

I was actually a teenager once and my relationship with and jokes to my friends weren't peeked in on by parents and family members. Both my sons are amazing and responsible and I've never had any reason to sneak around reading their words and I think parents who try to micromanage their childrens lives in that way just make their kids sneak around.

I'm not facebookfriends with my 16 yr. old but I am with my 22 yr. old (he requested me, not the other way around) and I don't mind it either way. My sis mentioned to my youngest that he refused her friend request and he smiled and said he loved her but his facebook was only for school friends... she explained that she was friends with both of her kids and he just smiled. In the car on the way home he let me know that both of his cousins had fake pages for their mom to friend them on, connected to a lot of their friends fake pages...

Did you read your kids' diaries? Same principle.
