Carlos Ghosn, president and CEO of the Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., speaks during a press conference following the company's annual general shareholders' meeting in Yokohama, near Tokyo, Tuesday, June 23, 2009. YOKOHAMA, Japan — Nissan Motor Co. said Tuesday its electric vehicles will be affordable, setting sights on the potentially lucrative market with a plan to mass produce zero-emission cars globally from 2012.

Japan's No. 3 automaker said it would unveil its first electric vehicle in Japan on August 2 and begin sales next year.

"We are moving forward with zero-emission vehicles," said Chief Executive Carlos Ghosn at a shareholders' meeting.

Nissan will sell electric cars first in Japan and the U.S. after April 2010, and then mass produce them globally in 2012.

Along with production in Japan and Europe, Ghosn said Nissan would make electric vehicles in the United States at its Smyrna plant in Tennessee with initial output capacity of more than 100,000 units per year.

"The U.S. is going to be a very important market" for the company's electric vehicle strategy, he said.

"I can tell you I'm not at all worried about how to sell these cars because there is an appetite for zero-emission cars."

Other carmakers are also racing to produce fully electric cars. U.S.-based Tesla Motors has a prototype that is scheduled to be produced by 2011. Toyota Motor Corp. has said it plans to sell electric vehicles in the U.S. by 2012 while Chinese automaker Dongfeng Motor Corp. has teamed up with a Dutch-based company to develop and make electric cars.

Ghosn gave few details, but stressed that Nissan's zero-emission cars will come "with a very reasonable price."

"If it's not affordable, it's not going to work," Ghosn told reporters.

"We are not going to come with a very high price. We are going to come with a reasonable price," he said. "We are here to mass market them."

Earlier in the month, Nissan's smaller rival, Mitsubishi Motors Corp., launched its electric vehicle, the i-MiEV, with a price tag of 4.59 million yen ($48,300). Even the company acknowledged the i-MiEV is too pricey and said it aims to cut the price in the future.

Ghosn said expensive electric cars are "for a niche" market which Nissan doesn't plan to target.

Ghosn brushed off criticism that Nissan is falling behind its bigger rivals _ Toyota and Honda Motor Co. _ in the increasingly competitive market for gas-electric hybrid vehicles.

Ghosn said the global market for hybrid cars remains too small, with hybrid cars accounting for just 3.5 percent of the Japanese auto market in 2008, and 2.3 percent in the United States.

Globally, the market for hybrid cars is below one percent, Ghosn said, attributing hype over gas-electric cars to heavy media coverage.

The meeting of Nissan shareholders came after the company reported a net loss of 233.7 billion yen in the financial year to March 2009. It was the first time Nissan had sunk to an annual loss since Ghosn took the helm a decade ago under an alliance with Renault SA of France.

Hit by a collapse in demand amid the global economic crisis, the company's sales tanked worldwide. It expects to sell 3.08 million vehicles in the current fiscal year to March 2010, down 9.7 percent year-on-year.

Ghosn said a prolonged slump in the global market is continuing, with sales projections in Japan, the United States and Europe all looking grim this year.

"Is the worst behind us? I don't know. I cannot tell you," he said. Nissan forecast its global market share will stand at 5.7 percent in the current financial year, up just 0.2 of a point year-on-year.

Nissan shares closed at 571 yen Tuesday, down 4.7 percent from Monday.

i went to a related article about the tesla and it included a video of the car. to ride in one is a very alien experience. the whoosh of the breeze- you swear you hear waves of the ocean breaking at 50 m.p.h. and you can hear the turn signal of a tesla as it drives around a corner - while standing out side of the car!

odd isn't it, everyone is jumping on the bandwagon to mass produce electric vehicles exept for detroit because they say there is no market for such vehicles. nissan, tata motors & other electric vehicle manufacturers are completely sold out with waiting lists. detroit misses the boat agian.

No doubt about that. And to think, they actually had a 10 year lead over the competition at one point, and still managed to missed the boat.

Electric cars were very popular with female drivers in the early days of the automobile.

Prior to the invention of the electric starter, hand cranking a car was difficult and dangerous.

"If it's not affordable, it's not going to work," Ghosn told reporters"

More importantly, if it's not convenient it won't work. all electric cars are a pipe dream that will go nowhere unless we can also build battery swapping or superfast recharge capability.

At the end of the day, anything more expensive than a bus pas is "not affordable" if it is for a vehicle that can only go a few hundred hours before being out of commission for 12 hours.

Nissan is already partnering with various city and state governments, and utility companies to build fast charging stations. Even with quick charging stations, slower charge-n-park stations will likely become the norm. Why even waste your time going to a refuel/recharge station when you can do it while you park? And even the slowest charge times are 8hours - from a 240v jack its 4hours. Must make your oil-slicked skin curl.

Sweet. With only 8 hours per charge and 300 miles per charge, I can drive from Denver to Chicago in just 4 measly days. Wow. With convenience like that, how can we miss?

Seriously. You need to live in reality. electric cars would be better than ICE cars when and only when they can compete on every level. i.e., they can recharge in 10 minutes or less at any filling station across the country. Until then, they're glorified power wheels toys for 99.9% of the car buying public and will amount to an epic fail.

Why is HP not reporting that the US Dept. of Energy under POTUS Obama is loaning Nissan "an undisclosed amount" of money?

Since when is it the responsibility of the US to help foreign automakers? It's bad enough we're propping up GM and Chrysler, now this...

"Since when is it the responsibility of the US to help foreign automakers."

Agreed. Nissan should not get a penny for production in japan. let japan subsidize that as they have done Toyota for years. I have no problem with money for Nissan if it comes with heavy stipulations that it can only go toward building facilities and employiong people in the US.

what is undisclosed? 1.6 billion loan to nissan north america, to re-tool the smyrna plant to build the electric car and build a battery making facility. my husband has worked there for 17 years. for the last 1 1/2 yrs. he's been cut back from full time to 32 hrs. per week. it may not seem like a big dent, but over a period of several months it has depleted nearly everything we had. hopefully, we will see "full time" return to nissan in middle tennessee.

i would also like to add that when nissan re-tooled their truck line to build the versa, it took only a few short weeks, whereas the spring hill, tn saturn plant took many months to re-tool to build yet another gas guzzler. it is time that nissan north america and it's employees are recognized for the sacrifices we've made and for keeping wasteful spending at a minimum.

Yeah. We better not let them "foreigners" building new manufacturing plants here, employing OUR citizens to build THEIR products. No wonder you rethugs ruined our economy so thoroughly after 8 years.

I wonder what the Model Name will be, EV-2?

The awkward thing is that the Nissan cars could be built including scrap metal from the GM EV-1. It wouldn't be the first time that Japan has repackaged and sent our scrap metal back to us.
