Nixon Tapes: Abortion Necessary "When You Have A Black And A White"

The New York Times:

On Jan. 23, 1973, when the Supreme Court struck down state criminal abortion laws in Roe v. Wade, President Richard M. Nixon made no public statement. But privately, newly released tapes reveal, he expressed ambivalence.

Nixon worried that greater access to abortions would foster "permissiveness," and said that "it breaks the family." But he also saw a need for abortion in some cases, such as interracial pregnancies.

"There are times when an abortion is necessary. I know that. When you have a black and a white," he told an aide, before adding: "Or a rape.

Opposition to abortion has always about protecting white numbers. That would be fine if the were up front about it. If there is a problem with the white birth rate it ought to be discussed publicly. A white has every right to exist as non-white does and vice versa. The hypocrisy of religion, or so-called western Christian or Judaic religion is that Western (or white) lives are worth-more, and that ethnic, or non-white lives are worth-less. When the right-wing movement has the same respect for live for a Congolese, or child born in New Orleans during Katrina, that they do for one born in Omaha, Nebraska, or Santa Monica, California, is the day I sign up for the pro-life cause.

Let us not forget that Nixon's "Southern Strategy"--playing to Southern whites' resentments stirred by integration--began the transformation of the Republican party into what it is today: a party that appeals to disgruntled old white men.
