Liberty University: Student Democrats Can Stay On Campus, Unofficially

RICHMOND, Va. — The student Democratic club at conservative Liberty University can continue as a campus group _ unofficially.

Chancellor Jerry Falwell Jr. says a new university policy allows the Liberty University College Democrats to be an unofficial club. The policy, which took effect Monday, also changed the College Republicans from an officially recognized campus group to an unofficial one.

Liberty withdrew recognition of the Democratic club last month because it supported the Democratic Party's platforms and candidates.

The political organizations won't receive school funding but may use the Liberty name and meet in school facilities if they make it clear the university doesn't endorse them.

College Democrats' secretary Jan Dervish says he's satisfied with the compromise.

Checked out their web site. To get in one needs a 2.0 GPA or a note from a parent stating that the student's homeschool education was completed. All students are required to take a course in "History of Life" which "equips students to deal with the controversy surrounding creationism and evolution.­" UG fees are $24K per year. Looks like they do offer technical degrees. Oh, and all the pictures of "campus life" show white students, except for one (and in that one the lone black guy is standing in the back of the group.)

I'm glad this university is officially excluding democrats. It makes for a much smaller GOP tent. The GOP would be happy if we went back to the dark ages. Where they can freely discriminate against people who are different than them. The ever shrinking party of grumpy old men.

Footnote: The 'Leader' of the Democrat Club, has transferred out of Liberty to Randolph College, by the way, now isn't that 'convenient'. See, wha had happened was...Libe­rty realized that tax exemption was in peril, and the 'acceptamce', is the lesser of the two evils they would face if Government, delved into their gold mine in Lynchburg, VA.

I don't get why a liberal student would want to attend such a conservative university­., where their ideas and beliefs are considered unworthy. It's not like their academics are world renowned or something.

For the same reason that not all religious fundies aren't republicans. I honestly can't understand how they can be republicans if they're supposed to be pro-life, yet it's the party that's pro gun and pro death penalty. It won't be too long before they finally realize there's not really a spot in that party for them anyway and they come back home to the democratic party their original home. I just hope that when they finally come back they're sent to the back of the bus where they belong instead of trying to take over the wheel.

Both terms, "liberty" and "university" are misused here. It calls itself a university- it is supposed to be a place where learning (which can't happen without independent thinking), NOT indoctrination, goes on. The irony of being able to use the school name is just too much.

“Liberty University,” a delicious oxymoron as rich in irony as it is in Orwellian linguistic subterfuge, has stepped squarely on its own “slippery slope.”

However . . . I doubt this limp concession has less to do with the grudging allowance of free political exchange within its walls as it does allowing it in order to continue receiving Federal funds.
