Below are excerpts of e-mails, obtained by The State newspaper in December, between Gov. Mark Sanford and Maria, a woman in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The State has removed the woman's full name and other personal details, including her address, e-mail address and children's names.

Kwame's (ex Detroit Mayor) text messages, now Republican Sanford's emails, to peek into someone's dirty laundry and expose to the general public en masse is awful. These days there is no private shame left. It makes a lot of judges other there who should not throw one stone out their glass houses. Pathetic we are all fed off the humiliation of those suffering (families) as though we are a collective nation of voyeurs, and peeping toms. What is the world insatiable's appetite for misery coming to? I think the information highway needs to take a detour into empathyville.

Guys, I know I'm not supposed to empathize with Mark Sanford, of all people, and though we without doubt remain political foils, this guy was wholly and completely in love with this woman...

It's unconscionable, then, that the State should release these emails at all--and I urge you all not to allow political calculation to replace humanity. The guy was clearly in an unhappy marriage.
The State newspaper didn't do anything wrong.
The Governor is a married man with FOUR kids still at home.
He deserted his state for over five days and left no one in charge.

Exactly. He voted to impeach Bill Clinton, and he said Bill Clinton should resign from office. I am now waiting on the Gov. to resign from office. Hypocrite.
Aptly said, Texas4Obama. Had Sanford and his wife already been divorced when this story broke, then yes, these emails would be 'private' communications between two consenting adults, and said emails would be considered 'off limits'. However, that's not the case, and now their intimate details are made public. And though I feel a small amount of empathy for Sanford, the fact remains that the man who said "Clinton should resign after this embarrassment" - that man, Sanford, is still married to his wife, is still an adulterer who got caught, and still hasn't resigned from his position yet, making him a hypocrite.
I agree with this post. I know Sanford did a terribly stupid thing and is a hypocrite since he went after Bill Clinton. But, I still feel sorry for him and his family and do not think the state should be releasing these emails. I do not want to know about everyone's private lives including public figures. And I certainly don't want their personal emails posted for the world to see, just like I wouldn't want it to happen to me or anyone else I know. I don't like it when Republicans go after Democrats in this manner and I don't like it in the reverse either.
One good way not to have evidence of your illicit tryst made public? DON'T HAVE A FRIGGIN' AFFAIR! Problem solved. Actions have consequences. This is one of those consequences.
One lesson - never send anything that personal via email. To have such a private sharing of one's heart and thoughts - so personal, out there for the world to read, and all those involved in this, their families, not to even speak of the world -- a true nightmare.
I think everyone can relate to what he is going through - any one who has been in love like that - we all know how it pulls. Bottom line, he is not willing to leave his family and wife for it. I can see the wisdom of being loyal to your marriage no matter what. If you are going to do something like this, then first finish that part of your life and move on -- affairs are a big mess on all levels!

Wow. Go karma. Reading these letters made me amazed at how this man, who has lived a privileged life as a wealthy white southern man, with his self-righteous, self-satisfied, morally black-and-white version of Christianity, was taught a lesson by life-that not everything fits in a nice, tidy box that you can stand on top of while judging others harshly for their transgressions.
That said, I was surprised to feel, after reading those emails, so sorry for him, his wife, and his mistress, and all of their children. The delicious irony of a South Carolina Republican Governor confessing a fondness for The Thorn Birds aside, this is quite sad.
So when do we find out who the other woman was?

I wish he had showed Bill Clinton that courtesy. But he got in the middle of it and asked Bill Clinton to resign. He also voted to impeach.
How sick is this...He has a great wife and job and he allowed his p---s to think for him. It makes me want to cry. I have been with my husband 25 years and I am only 40 years old. Jon and Kate make me crazy as well. I use to believe family meant something.

We should all be angry and appalled that The State - the south carolina state newspaper - had those notes from at least december and never leaked them. I would have leaked them the second he denied the stim funds for the state.
This whole thing would have been a lot less incendiary and almost a non-event if all he had to do was apologize for the affair and not gone missing, used state vehicles, lied and had the whole family and state disgraced. Along with his hopes for a future toppled by this amazing runaway story.
I agree, and you are right on many levels.
And look, Im a brass knuckle Democrat, I'm glad to see him go down but is our country better for it, maybe but not really.

I am curious of the paper's motivations, real curious because I can't figure it out.
Maybe the editor is a Republican, or maybe a Democrat who was waiting for the most devastating time to drop it, or maybe they are just incompetent.
I just feel bad for his family.
The had no proof back in December that the emails were valid.
And then today according to The State:
"Late Wednesday, the governor’s office said it would not dispute the authenticity of the e-mails."
I read a few of the emails and it seems that they both just got caught up in the fantasy world that is often created by affairs. It is easy to start believing the fantasy. The reality of the situation is that he made a commitment to love and honor his wife... until death due them apart. Additionally, he and his wife have four boys that need their father to make better decisions and get out of that fantasy world.
I wonder what's it like having sweet nothings with a southern accent whispered in your ear.

I cringed physically and mentally when he used "y'alls" in a sentence asking for privacy for his family. wow. stim funds are really needed starting from the top down in education.
Sanford looks like a cross between Kermit the Frog with a toupee or a character on the Simpsons.
