Sarah Palin is the most popular figure in the GOP, according to a Pew Research Center poll released on Wednesday.

The poll surveyed leading GOP politicians' favorability among both Republicans and the general public. Palin took the lead in terms of popularity within the party, with 73% of Republicans giving her a favorable rating.

Among the general public, however, Palin was found to be a particularly polarizing figure. The Alaska governor's rating among all voters was split nearly in half: 45% favorable versus 44% unfavorable.

According to the poll, Mitt Romney is the second-most popular GOP figure. He received a 57% favorability rating among Republicans and among the general public, a 40% rating. Overall, Romney's ratings are an improvement over last year on nearly every front, meaning he's gotten more popular since his presidential bid ended.

The other GOP figures in the survey did not fare as well as Palin and Romney. Newt Gingrich had a 55% favorability rating among Republicans and a 22% unfavorable rating. Michael Steele, meanwhile, had only a 28% favorability rating. A full 58% of Republicans said they do not know enough about the RNC chairman to register an opinion.

Go team! As long as Palin and Romney are favorites, the Dems are in for a long long time.

Sorry Romney. No matter how much money you throw at the GOP, they still won't let Mormons into the "Big Tent".

But they're happy to let you keep throwing money at them!

Republicans, please, nominate either Palin or Romney for your Presidential candidate in 2012. It doesn't matter. The Democrats will have nothing to lose.

They will have lost everything we have before the next election anyway...but on the bright side...thanks to Obama, the next president will own a broke auto company...be running cash strapped banks that wont lend money...and a health system in shreds ...

I guess that is the "change we needed..."

Whatever remedies are put in place to try and repair our utterly abysmal 'health care system', I pray fervently that there is a *strong* mental health component to it... With Palin getting a 73% favorable rating among GOPers, it's proof-positive that there are some serious, SERIOUS, mental issues out there. There's still time, America, to see to it that the GOPer's delusions and hallucinations are appropriately treated *before* they become any more la-la-landish and bat**it loony than they already are.

Romney's platform

Mitt Romney "Vote for me, I will give you more Mitchell and Jessen!" " I believe in torture and having little kids raped, terrorizing their parent (s)!"

Why is there an apparent national aversion in the US to selecting the best candidate to be president?

For as far back as I can remember, with the possible exception of the centrist Bill Clinton, Americans have tended to choose the polar opposite of the previous president, when electing opposing parties.

And now, we have Barack Obama the "Intellectual President" as a reaction to Bush II who was viewed by many as being anti-cerebral. So naturally, in reacting to this, there is a concomitant rise in the stock of Sarah Palin.

Imagine for a moment that Americans were able to view their candidates dispassionately and to judge them on merit, rather than through an emotional prism?

If that were the case, then surely a certain Hillary Clinton would now be in the White House.

Even Hillary is over this, can't you?

Obama was always the better choice than Clinton.

There isnt a rise in Palin's stock among the general public. Only in the GOP.

If American's judged candidates dispassionately, Obama would still be in the White House.

If that was the case then a Cray XT5 Jaguar computer would be president and the winning party would get to appoint the application programmers.

Your observation seems way off the mark. From my perspective, Americans in 2008 were not reacting only to Bush, but also to the Clinton presidency. Many voters put great emphasis on character and good judgment. Obama won on merits, particularly strong on qualities that Bush, Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton lacked. I am confident Americans chose the best candidate in 2008.

Really, must be the money he is pouring into people hands, and the throats he is cutting.

Republicans can be counted on to prefer the candidate that spends more time in the spotlight. Mitt Romney has been quiet, while S. Palin is has been getting a lot of coverage over any and every minor controversy she can spin into a media event.

The news (or at least the Huff Post) should do with S. Palin what E! did with Speidi and let the public vote on whether or not we care to hear any more about her antics.

Personally, I am from the Great Pacific Northwest so I am happy to have Alaska on the map, finally, but I am sad that it had to be dragged there by the lowest common denominator.

Mitt is being quiet hoping a family scandal will go away, and the person (s) put out of commission, -- silenced, --- his hatch men have been working over time for them.

Sara Palin has 73% of Republicans giving her a favorable rating. Given what it takes to be viewed favorably by Republicans, this means she is definitely not smarter than a fifth grader.
