Palin Is Most Popular GOP Figure, Romney Comes In Second: Poll

Sarah Palin is the most popular figure in the GOP, according to a Pew Research Center poll released on Wednesday.

The poll surveyed leading GOP politicians' favorability among both Republicans and the general public. Palin took the lead in terms of popularity within the party, with 73% of Republicans giving her a favorable rating.

Among the general public, however, Palin was found to be a particularly polarizing figure. The Alaska governor's rating among all voters was split nearly in half: 45% favorable versus 44% unfavorable.

According to the poll, Mitt Romney is the second-most popular GOP figure. He received a 57% favorability rating among Republicans and among the general public, a 40% rating. Overall, Romney's ratings are an improvement over last year on nearly every front, meaning he's gotten more popular since his presidential bid ended.

The other GOP figures in the survey did not fare as well as Palin and Romney. Newt Gingrich had a 55% favorability rating among Republicans and a 22% unfavorable rating. Michael Steele, meanwhile, had only a 28% favorability rating. A full 58% of Republicans said they do not know enough about the RNC chairman to register an opinion.

Notably since mid-October 2008 and now Palin has lost:

5 points with conservative republicans

5 points with moderate/liberal republicans

1 point with white-evangelical republicans

10 points with non-evangelical republicans

And consider, too that only 22% of the voters self-identify as republican. Among Latinos (after the Sotomayor hate feast) republicans score a favourable rating of a whopping 8%!!

Palin may be popular among Republicans, but she needs over 65% of the white vote which will be difficult to attain. McCain won (same as Reagan in 1980) 55% of the white vote and Bush 58%. While she is viewed favourably among 41% women, 48% give her an unfavourable rating.

So things are not quite as rosy as they may seem on the surface.

(Iam shocked, however, that Palin has a 45% favourable rating with the general public).

Have all the fun you want with her, but Palin WILL be the GOP nominee in 2012. She is perfectly positioned, especially if she doesn't run in 2010 for re-election. She is loved by the base and polarizes the general electorate, just like Bush did. And with two strong contenders (Ensign and Sanford) ruining their chances, who does that leave?

Romney? Been tried and failed
Perry? Americans tired of Texans
Gingrich? No way. Only dogs can hear him he is so shrill.
Jeb Bush? Now that's an interesting one as a Stop Palin party choice.

With Frank Luntz as the head of propaganda and Karl Rove as the strategist, this babe may, and I emphasize MAY, actually pull off an upset in 2012, especially if her talk about big government and defecits catches fire, which polls show it may already be.

She is loved by her base but that base is shrinking and she is a polarizing figure which won't bode her well.
Her last antic with Letterman ended up basically ridiculing her as those who arranged it ended up with mud in their eye. Those 15 protesters outside CBS studios were excellent examples of the base who supports her - h a t e filled v e n o m filled know not muchs. There facts were wrong and they did nothing good for SP.

Palin receives a more favorable rating from those with a high school degree or less (48% favorable, 36% unfavorable) than she does from college graduates (41% favorable, 52% unfavorable). Regionally, she is somewhat better regarded in the South (49% favorable) than she is in the Northeast (39% favorable).
