LOS ANGELES — Harmless comic characters or racist robots? The buzz over the summer blockbuster "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" only grew Wednesday as some said two jive-talking Chevy characters were racial caricatures. Skids and Mudflap, twin robots disguised as compact hatchbacks, constantly brawl and bicker in rap-inspired street slang. They're forced to acknowledge that they can't read. One has a gold tooth.

As good guys, they fight alongside the Autobots and are intended to provide comic relief. But their traits raise the specter of stereotypes most notably seen when Jar Jar Binks, the clumsy, broken-English speaking alien from "Star Wars: Episode I _ The Phantom Menace," was criticized as a caricature.

One fan called the Transformers twins "Jar Jar Bots" in a blog post online.

Todd Herrold, who watched the movie in New York City, called the characters "outrageous."

"It's one thing when robot cars are racial stereotypes," he said, "but the movie also had a bucktoothed black guy who is briefly in one scene who's also a stereotype."

"They're like the fools," said 18-year-old Nicholas Govede, also of New York City. "The comic relief in a degrading way."

Not all fans were offended. Twin brothers Jason and William Garcia, 18, who saw the movie in Miami, said they related to the characters _ not their illiteracy, but their bickering.

"They were hilarious," Jason said. "Every movie has their standout character, and I think they were the ones for this movie."

Story continues below

In Atlanta, Rico Lawson said people were reading too much into the characters. "It was actually funny," said Lawson, 25, who saw the movie with his girlfriend in Atlanta.

That was the aim, director Michael Bay said in an interview.

"It's done in fun," he said. "I don't know if it's stereotypes _ they are robots, by the way. These are the voice actors. This is kind of the direction they were taking the characters and we went with it."

Bay said the twins' parts "were kind of written but not really written, so the voice actors is when we started to really kind of come up with their characters."

Actor Reno Wilson, who is black, voices Mudflap. Tom Kenny, the white actor behind SpongeBob SquarePants, voices Skids.

Wilson said Wednesday that he never imagined viewers might consider the twins to be racial caricatures. When he took the role, he was told that the alien robots learned about human culture through the Web and that the twins were "wannabe gangster types."

"It's an alien who uploaded information from the Internet and put together the conglomeration and formed this cadence, way of speaking and body language that was accumulated over X amount of years of information and that's what came out," the 40-year-old actor said. "If he had uploaded country music, he would have come out like that."

It's not fair to assume the characters are black, he said.

"It could easily be a Transformer that uploaded Kevin Federline data," Wilson said. "They were just like posers to me."

Kenny did not respond to an interview request Wednesday.

"I purely did it for kids," the director said. "Young kids love these robots, because it makes it more accessible to them."

Screenwriters Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman said they followed Bay's lead in creating the twins. Still, the characters aren't integral to the story, and when the action gets serious, they disappear entirely, notes Tasha Robinson, associate entertainment editor at The Onion.

"They don't really have any positive effect on the film," she said. "They only exist to talk in bad ebonics, beat each other up and talk about how stupid each other is."

Hollywood has a track record of using negative stereotypes of black characters for comic relief, said Todd Boyd, a professor of popular culture at the University of Southern California's School of Cinematic Arts, who has not seen the "Transformers" sequel.

"There's a history of people getting laughs at the expense of African-Americans and African-American culture," Boyd said. "These images are not completely divorced from history even though it's a new movie and even though they're robots and not humans."

American cinema also has a tendency to deal with race indirectly, said Allyson Nadia Field, an assistant professor of cinema and media studies at the University of California, Los Angeles.

"There's a persistent dehumanization of African-Americans throughout Hollywood that displaces issues of race onto non-human entities," said Field, who also hasn't seen the film. "It's not about skin color or robot color. It's about how their actions and language are coded racially."

If these characters weren't animated and instead played by real black actors, "then you might have to admit that it's racist," Robinson said. "But stick it into a robot's mouth, and it's just a robot, it's OK."

But if they're alien robots, she continued, "why do they talk like bad black stereotypes?"

Bay brushes off any whiff of controversy.

"Listen, you're going to have your naysayers on anything," he said. "It's like is everything going to be melba toast? It takes all forms and shapes and sizes."

Yea its somewhat racist. No black person in the movie theater laughed except for my friend sitting next to me (I think he thinks he's white). I shrug at stuff like this because you can't really get too angry about it. It is what it is. The movie was made and overall it was a pretty good movie.... besides I consider the voice of optimus prime black, so me and michael bay are square on that part. A funny thing that I noticed is in the first transformers there was also a slang talking robot who made a full of himself and got shredded to bits. I see a couple black people on here posting madd ish. Listen yall, its a white man's country so stop complaining about it they don't see the world through your eyes so if their humor is off so be it. We are all human. This humor is nothing to be getting your panties all twisted about. If you really have a problem don't watch this movie tell all your black friends not to watch it and make your own transformers with a majority black cast and two rednecks as the dumb robots. BTW Meghan Fox too perfect!

Were you born in 1988? Were you the white friend your clueless black buddy was trying to impress? Or are you black and projecting a mentality on your buddy that you have also as shown in these comments? A couple of problems here. Firstly you may not have the historical understanding of how hurtful these images are in the long term (growing up in the 90s doesn't tell the story). Secondly, you obviously don't seem to grasp the concept of people voicing opposition to shape public opinion to affect change. Just because it's on MTV, Spike TV or on a video game and it's "making that money" doesn't make it righteous. BTW, Peter Cullen (Prime's voice) is a white Canadian. And that "it's a white man's country" nonsense? Did you just graduate from the H!tler Youth or did you think this was Youtube? A little education for you, blacks are 13% of the population but they innovate and drive US culture. So if you are black, it seems entertainment like this has done a real job on your self-image and perception of black people as a whole. And that's unfortunate.

And the white guy who voices spongebob is one of the "black" robots.. what's your point? To me Optimus Prime sounds like a black guy and so to me he is a black guy... its all a matter of perception. Yes I was born in 88 and yes I'm black. Don't get me wrong I didn't like Michael Bay's directing of the movie so much. A feminist can also rightly scream that this movie was sexist. It was just as sexist as it was racist. You can also argue why is tyrese a lowly technician while the white guy is an officer and claim that as racist. Whatever you want to see is based on your perception. But that is not my point really or my argument with you. My argument is who are you arguing to? You are expressing your views on a blog site that is majority white about a movie that you paid for that was created by a set of producers that are probably exclusively white in a country that is guess what majority white!

This issue about a silly movie marketed for children about two silly characters is ridiculous. "Outrage" and cries of racism over silly stuff like this leaves our cries of racism when it really counts ineffective or at best diluted. We need to save our cries of outrage for real injustices that actually affect us like our nations ridiculous drug laws and preposterous prison sentences and real and blatant acts of racism that threaten our well being or human rights. Innovate and drive US culture? What planet do you live on? This is a white man's world brother. They exploit us, by telling us what to sing about or how to act on tv and you think we run the world because a n*gga get his 15 seconds of fame and a million dollars while they are raking in hundreds of millions if not billions off that same guys back?? Don't you think that is the unfortunate side of things?

Not to mention the fact that the jive talking robots were voiced by a white actor (Tom Kenny). Long before 1988, there were white people who put black $hit on their faces and pretended to be "negroes" in order to entertain other white people (just think Justin Timberlake minus the black $hit). Anyway, the portrayal of big lipped, jive talking, illiterate, gold-tooth wearing robots may not bother you Dem'88, but it pisses me the f#ck off!

i have to take issue with your comment about your friend "thinking he's white." i can't tell you how often black people have asked me why i "pretend to be white." how i speak is how i speak. i grew up in the suburbs, around people who had a general command of the english language. it has always infuriated me that speaking non-ebonics somehow translates into me "acting white." the way someone speaks is not necessarily indicative of their race, and if they don't speak like one would expect them to because of their race it doesn't mean they aren't real. please stop with that mess.

I know what you're talking about. Is he the lone black character, what's his face? I haven't played the sequel.

African-Americans are nothing but caricatures to Hollywood.

Notice in medical shows, there are virtually no Indian doctors? HA! Kumar and Bend It Like Beckham girl are like the only Indians ever to have become doctors on TV.

I wonder how many sexist stereotypes exist in the albums that are owned by all of the people expressing their false outrage over robots. This move if it does, does not come close to the level of sterotyping that is in music about women. And unlike the robots the music does not try to make the women heros, but rather H&*.

Sexism in rap and some RnB didn't become as pervasive as it is now until the industry became taken over by corporate suits who only cares about what sells. These are some of the same corporate suits in the entertainment industry that have been pushing these stereotypes against Blacks for decades. If you haven't heard about s.te.p and fe.tch.it and stereotypical profile of Black Men and Black Women and how they relate to one another, then clearly you don't know what you are talking about.

What doesn't come close is negative and "buffoonish" portrayals of blacks in film and media since their inception (Birth of a Nation 1915). I don't agree with sexism in music but that is a relatively recent phenomenon (regarding Hip Hop music). The images of blacks perpetuated in film and media for nearly a century, have served to dehumanize African Americans to this day.

I don't think racism will ever end. I believe stereotypes have and will always exist... It's human nature to find amusement in cultures and practices that are not normal for them. For example, I doubt anyone will be objecting to the gay stereotypes in the upcoming "Bruno"... nobody gave a damn when "Borat" portrayed Central Asians in a very negative light... It's like some stereotypes are okay... some, not so much. No matter who is the butt of the joke, to laugh at one is the same at laughing at the other... unless you're laughing at yourself, otherwise you are showing hypocrisy to find particular caricatures amusing while expressing outrage towards the portrayal of others.

I'm surprised that more people are not raising a fuss about the movie's portrayal of President Obama. The movie went out of its way to point out that he is President in the movie (the original only hinted at Bush being President... this one actually shows and states it) and it makes him out to be an obstructionist with regards to defeating the bad guys. One character even goes as far as telling an administration official that "you can't negotiate with these things... diplomacy won't work."

Really? Please don't spoil the "plot" for us but how humorous were the "cheap jew" and "child molesting catholic preist" robots in the movie? I'm black as well and was offended by the "jive talking" robot in the first movie. My son (7 at the time) asked me why he talked like that, I told him that some people find that funny but that it wasn't. I'm quite sure that they ramped up the "jive" for this film and neither my son nor myself will be patronizing Mr. Bay's film.

Have you ever heard of subliminal suggestions, social engineering or programming? It happens a lot in movies. Only a daily basis, there is an onslaught of r-a-c-i-s-t and suprem-a-c-i-s-t messages in the media. It's called normative conditioning through branding and labeling.

That movie is more than just entertainment. Wake up.

Thank you!! I see it every time I turn on my televison and it's so unbelievably clear to me. I swear I feel like I'm in the twilight zone when I try to point it out to some black folk and they act as if I'm seeing things.

I believe a lot of people love to live in the "land of make believe" so that don't have to face reality. Crazy. Insane, actually.
