LOS ANGELES — Harmless comic characters or racist robots? The buzz over the summer blockbuster "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" only grew Wednesday as some said two jive-talking Chevy characters were racial caricatures. Skids and Mudflap, twin robots disguised as compact hatchbacks, constantly brawl and bicker in rap-inspired street slang. They're forced to acknowledge that they can't read. One has a gold tooth.

As good guys, they fight alongside the Autobots and are intended to provide comic relief. But their traits raise the specter of stereotypes most notably seen when Jar Jar Binks, the clumsy, broken-English speaking alien from "Star Wars: Episode I _ The Phantom Menace," was criticized as a caricature.

One fan called the Transformers twins "Jar Jar Bots" in a blog post online.

Todd Herrold, who watched the movie in New York City, called the characters "outrageous."

"It's one thing when robot cars are racial stereotypes," he said, "but the movie also had a bucktoothed black guy who is briefly in one scene who's also a stereotype."

"They're like the fools," said 18-year-old Nicholas Govede, also of New York City. "The comic relief in a degrading way."

Not all fans were offended. Twin brothers Jason and William Garcia, 18, who saw the movie in Miami, said they related to the characters _ not their illiteracy, but their bickering.

"They were hilarious," Jason said. "Every movie has their standout character, and I think they were the ones for this movie."

Story continues below

In Atlanta, Rico Lawson said people were reading too much into the characters. "It was actually funny," said Lawson, 25, who saw the movie with his girlfriend in Atlanta.

That was the aim, director Michael Bay said in an interview.

"It's done in fun," he said. "I don't know if it's stereotypes _ they are robots, by the way. These are the voice actors. This is kind of the direction they were taking the characters and we went with it."

Bay said the twins' parts "were kind of written but not really written, so the voice actors is when we started to really kind of come up with their characters."

Actor Reno Wilson, who is black, voices Mudflap. Tom Kenny, the white actor behind SpongeBob SquarePants, voices Skids.

Wilson said Wednesday that he never imagined viewers might consider the twins to be racial caricatures. When he took the role, he was told that the alien robots learned about human culture through the Web and that the twins were "wannabe gangster types."

"It's an alien who uploaded information from the Internet and put together the conglomeration and formed this cadence, way of speaking and body language that was accumulated over X amount of years of information and that's what came out," the 40-year-old actor said. "If he had uploaded country music, he would have come out like that."

It's not fair to assume the characters are black, he said.

"It could easily be a Transformer that uploaded Kevin Federline data," Wilson said. "They were just like posers to me."

Kenny did not respond to an interview request Wednesday.

"I purely did it for kids," the director said. "Young kids love these robots, because it makes it more accessible to them."

Screenwriters Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman said they followed Bay's lead in creating the twins. Still, the characters aren't integral to the story, and when the action gets serious, they disappear entirely, notes Tasha Robinson, associate entertainment editor at The Onion.

"They don't really have any positive effect on the film," she said. "They only exist to talk in bad ebonics, beat each other up and talk about how stupid each other is."

Hollywood has a track record of using negative stereotypes of black characters for comic relief, said Todd Boyd, a professor of popular culture at the University of Southern California's School of Cinematic Arts, who has not seen the "Transformers" sequel.

"There's a history of people getting laughs at the expense of African-Americans and African-American culture," Boyd said. "These images are not completely divorced from history even though it's a new movie and even though they're robots and not humans."

American cinema also has a tendency to deal with race indirectly, said Allyson Nadia Field, an assistant professor of cinema and media studies at the University of California, Los Angeles.

"There's a persistent dehumanization of African-Americans throughout Hollywood that displaces issues of race onto non-human entities," said Field, who also hasn't seen the film. "It's not about skin color or robot color. It's about how their actions and language are coded racially."

If these characters weren't animated and instead played by real black actors, "then you might have to admit that it's racist," Robinson said. "But stick it into a robot's mouth, and it's just a robot, it's OK."

But if they're alien robots, she continued, "why do they talk like bad black stereotypes?"

Bay brushes off any whiff of controversy.

"Listen, you're going to have your naysayers on anything," he said. "It's like is everything going to be melba toast? It takes all forms and shapes and sizes."

dct1999 & milo h minderbinder: I cannot deny that Justice Wainwright may have been expressing his own bigotry when he used the word uppity. We are not inside his head, and therefore any attempt to discern his intent is pure speculation. I was trying to say that the word is not necessarily offensive out of hand, as it can be used as a benign expression in the proper context. That being said, I agree that it was a poor choice of words on his part, in the sense that he could have chosen a synonym to express the same sentiment.

However, dct1999, it is difficult for me to be dictated to by the person that wrote this:

"As soon as you white people stop pretending that all of you are educated, well-employed, law abiding, contributing members of society.

LMAO @ the myths that white people buy into."

I stand by my comment, and I don't care what your reaction is. Too many white people act as if every single white person in america is a paragon of virture, while they stereotype non-white people. Sorry that some of you don't like being called on your bulllsheeet.

Re-post, since none of the deniers have replied or commented on it:

Why is anyone shocked? The characters played by Bernie Mac and Anthony Anderson (first transformers movie) were ridiculously stereotypical. The Mac character actually referred to his mother as mam...my and b^tch. The Anderson character was supposed to be a brilliant, yet he spent the entire movie whining, crying, eating and waiting for white people to save him. Are we really surprised by the robots in the new movie?

Noone cares about someone who sterotypes and then whines about others doing it.

It's obvious that you're incapable of providing a response based on logic and reason. That's unsruprising.

90% of the "jive talk" I hear comes from teenage white kids. I'm shocked at the way white kids are portrayed in this movie I have not seen yet.

My comments on "uppity" were not directed to you, and I've never said anything about the intent of your posts.

What is wrong with you? Do you always have these delusions?

Racism or not, I find it truly sad that so many people are going to turn out for such a bad movie. Even ignoring these characters, there are plenty of other reasons NOT to go see this.

I have not seen the movie, and probably won't until it's in the discount bin at 7-Eleven or the like, but i am curious, they mention not the robots cannot read. can't read English 9which seeing they are alien 'bots is perfectly reasonable) or they can't read at all (which again being bots may be how they were programmed?)?

dct1999:

Please point out the part where I deny the historical implications of the word 'uppity'?

Like I said, the word is only offensive if you choose to perceive it in only the most negative manner. When it was used earlier in this thread, it was not in reference to African Americans alone, but people of ALL races.

uppity: affecting an attitude of inflated self-esteem; haughty; snobbish, rebelliously self-assertive; not inclined to be tractable or deferential.

There is nothing in that definition that is prejudicial towards any one race. It only becomes a slur when used in certain contexts, or when someone DECIDES for themselves that every single use of the word is an example of latent bigotry.

Please feel free to point out my intellectual dishonesty.

What part of uppity as associated wtih black people are you having difficulty with? A simple dictionary definition does not take into account the historical use of the word. You can consult Webster's as often as you like, and you'll never be able to re-write history, try as you might.

I respect your opinion, but it seems that we will never agree on this.

I stand by my opinion that you have made a conscious choice to only associate the word 'uppity' with it's most repugnant use.

You clearly disagree, and although we differ I can understand where you're coming from.

That being said, at no point have I tried to rewrite history, nor have I denied the atrocious mindset that the word has often been used to convey. My point was that it wasn't being used in that fashion in the relevant post.

Again, it seems that we should agree to disagree.

Uppity emerged in black culture, used by black people to describe other black people who were self-righteous.

The word carries no racist connotations of any kind, and has become a part of the english language, and is used by a variety of people to simply describe someone who is self-righteous.

dct1999: All you've done on this thread is respond to posts by insulting the poster, while offering nothing of substance in response. You are free to disagree, even to disagree vehemently. But when you resort to insults it can diminish the substance of your arguments.

You may want to note that 'uppity' is a word, complete with a definition in the dictionary, and that it was used by Justice Wainwright earlier in this thread in reference to people of ALL races. Are you going to try and suggest that certain everyday words should be off limits, just because you choose to perceive them only in the most insidious context, regardless of how the word was actually being used?

I know black people who are uppity. I know white people who are uppity. I know Asians, Jews, Arabs, Israelis, gays, lesbians, men, women, and children who are uppity. There are uppity people everywhere. Pointing that out does not make me a racist.

Please notice that I penned this post without insulting you. I would appreciate it if you would respond in kind. Thank you.

Wow...just read the MSN review of this piece of trash and honestly...I've read bad review before, but OMG...this reviewer simply eviscerated Bay and his racist, electro-drivel. I'm still amazed that we went from ACTUAL set building with 2x4s and cement and steel to CGI imagined eye-gasms and spend hundreds of MILLIONS on them without actually producing watchable content! God, Hollywood needs to close up shop...we have YouTube and other internet media projects with better acting, producing, directing, etc,....etc.....We sure are tired of paying thru the nose for snide, pouty actors with issues crammed in front of a green screen only to NOT be able to act! Just keep making the cinema screens bigger with greater High Definition, thumpier base until we can't sit comfortably because the epilepsy-inducing brain shart of a show you created needs gimmicks to sell tix. Wow.....Bay....Transmorphers...CGI....etc....FAIL.....epic
