LOS ANGELES — Harmless comic characters or racist robots? The buzz over the summer blockbuster "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" only grew Wednesday as some said two jive-talking Chevy characters were racial caricatures. Skids and Mudflap, twin robots disguised as compact hatchbacks, constantly brawl and bicker in rap-inspired street slang. They're forced to acknowledge that they can't read. One has a gold tooth.

As good guys, they fight alongside the Autobots and are intended to provide comic relief. But their traits raise the specter of stereotypes most notably seen when Jar Jar Binks, the clumsy, broken-English speaking alien from "Star Wars: Episode I _ The Phantom Menace," was criticized as a caricature.

One fan called the Transformers twins "Jar Jar Bots" in a blog post online.

Todd Herrold, who watched the movie in New York City, called the characters "outrageous."

"It's one thing when robot cars are racial stereotypes," he said, "but the movie also had a bucktoothed black guy who is briefly in one scene who's also a stereotype."

"They're like the fools," said 18-year-old Nicholas Govede, also of New York City. "The comic relief in a degrading way."

Not all fans were offended. Twin brothers Jason and William Garcia, 18, who saw the movie in Miami, said they related to the characters _ not their illiteracy, but their bickering.

"They were hilarious," Jason said. "Every movie has their standout character, and I think they were the ones for this movie."

In Atlanta, Rico Lawson said people were reading too much into the characters. "It was actually funny," said Lawson, 25, who saw the movie with his girlfriend in Atlanta.

That was the aim, director Michael Bay said in an interview.

"It's done in fun," he said. "I don't know if it's stereotypes _ they are robots, by the way. These are the voice actors. This is kind of the direction they were taking the characters and we went with it."

Bay said the twins' parts "were kind of written but not really written, so the voice actors is when we started to really kind of come up with their characters."

Actor Reno Wilson, who is black, voices Mudflap. Tom Kenny, the white actor behind SpongeBob SquarePants, voices Skids.

Wilson said Wednesday that he never imagined viewers might consider the twins to be racial caricatures. When he took the role, he was told that the alien robots learned about human culture through the Web and that the twins were "wannabe gangster types."

"It's an alien who uploaded information from the Internet and put together the conglomeration and formed this cadence, way of speaking and body language that was accumulated over X amount of years of information and that's what came out," the 40-year-old actor said. "If he had uploaded country music, he would have come out like that."

It's not fair to assume the characters are black, he said.

"It could easily be a Transformer that uploaded Kevin Federline data," Wilson said. "They were just like posers to me."

Kenny did not respond to an interview request Wednesday.

"I purely did it for kids," the director said. "Young kids love these robots, because it makes it more accessible to them."

Screenwriters Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman said they followed Bay's lead in creating the twins. Still, the characters aren't integral to the story, and when the action gets serious, they disappear entirely, notes Tasha Robinson, associate entertainment editor at The Onion.

"They don't really have any positive effect on the film," she said. "They only exist to talk in bad ebonics, beat each other up and talk about how stupid each other is."

Hollywood has a track record of using negative stereotypes of black characters for comic relief, said Todd Boyd, a professor of popular culture at the University of Southern California's School of Cinematic Arts, who has not seen the "Transformers" sequel.

"There's a history of people getting laughs at the expense of African-Americans and African-American culture," Boyd said. "These images are not completely divorced from history even though it's a new movie and even though they're robots and not humans."

American cinema also has a tendency to deal with race indirectly, said Allyson Nadia Field, an assistant professor of cinema and media studies at the University of California, Los Angeles.

"There's a persistent dehumanization of African-Americans throughout Hollywood that displaces issues of race onto non-human entities," said Field, who also hasn't seen the film. "It's not about skin color or robot color. It's about how their actions and language are coded racially."

If these characters weren't animated and instead played by real black actors, "then you might have to admit that it's racist," Robinson said. "But stick it into a robot's mouth, and it's just a robot, it's OK."

But if they're alien robots, she continued, "why do they talk like bad black stereotypes?"

Bay brushes off any whiff of controversy.

"Listen, you're going to have your naysayers on anything," he said. "It's like is everything going to be melba toast? It takes all forms and shapes and sizes."

I'm not going to try to justify black stereotypes in what I'm saying, but let's imagine for a moment that instead of two jive-talking "black" robots, they're two hick rednecks that transformed from clunker '69 Chevy trucks, have a few teeth missing, and talk in the most trashy Alabama dialect you could imagine. As I see it, that's a white stereotype.

Or, they transform from a Smart car/Prius and, instead of emerging from Alabama, they're the typified liberal stereotype and they use Starbucks latte as fuel.

As I see it, there's a certain degree of relativity to this.

Not the same thing. Whites are the majority, and doing this looks like bullying.

It would be like if Transformers was set in Australia, and two robots were blatant caricatures of Americans. One's name would be Stars, and the other would be Stripes, maybe something even more sly. They would talk about going to war all the time and getting fast food. That's wrong.

It is the same thing. You are wrong. Stereotyping and/or racism are the same, regardless of who is the minority, and who is the majority.

Well, ...to be fair rednecks don't have a lifestyle promoted to them by teachers, parents, athletic clubs, etc, etc...that glorifies ignorance, bad hygiene, hate, fear, et al. Inner city kids get tricked into thinking thug life is attractive.

Actually, I think rednecks DO have a lifestyle that promotes all those things; they just hate and fear somebody different.

Otherwise I guess there is some degree of relativity between the movie that exists in your imagination and the one that exists in real life.

Why is anyone shocked?

The characters played by Bernie Mac and Anthony Anderson (first transformers movie) were ridiculously stereotypical. The Mac character actually referred to his mother as mam...my and b^tch. The Anderson character was supposed to be a brilliant, yet he spent the entire movie whining, crying, eating and waiting for white people to save him.

Are we really surprised by the robots in the new movie?

Wow, just wow.

I guess the next time I see anyone walking around portraying a negative stereotype of their race or sexuality, I should inform them of how offensive they are to the uppity members of their community.

Flamboyant homosexuals? Not today buddy
Street thug blacks? I dont think so, its offensive to me
Wanna be gangster hispanics? Wait a minute!
Smart nerdy asians? Not on my watch
Uptight white folks? Watch it there!

Grow up... seriously. The moment black people start dealing with the negative stereotypes in their community, that they create, we might take this stuff a little more seriously. Until then, take a step back and accept that not EVERYTHING is about you or your race.

On a side note, its also funny to laugh at religion, politics, race and sexuality. It can be a great tool to break barriers.

But on the other hand this is excellent educational material to show to some people and tell them - "this is what they think of you. You really happy fulfilling their stereotype of who you are?"

Michael Bay has a history of casting African Americans in negative stereotypical roles

Bad boys and Bad boys 2 - will smith and martin lawrence as dumb and reckless cops, dreadlocked rastafarians as just weed smoking drug dealers
The Rock - The undisciplined captain on Alcatraz who has a problem with authority
Armageddon - General Kimsy, the rude, egotistical, unnecessarily angry general who thinks everyone else as stupid. Michael Clarke Duncan (Bear) just a big muscle head dumb guy
Independence Day - Will Smith, a CAPTAIN! in the AIR FORCE! (a respected rank! an Officer in the military!) but still portrayed as the always animated in his speech caricature, not very smart guy who’s aspirations is to marry an uneducated stripper in a pub. (So you’re an attractive captain in the air force and the only girl you can get is a single mom who’s a stripper who probably didn’t even finish high school)
Transformers - Bernie Mac, and Jive. (Say no more)
Now your bashings AA's again in your new movie

For goodness sake man quit perpetuating the stereotypes.

But to be fair he did portray Djimon Hounsou the bounty hunter in The Island as a good guy who took the moral route.

I guess 1 outta 6 aint bad

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 05:11 PM on 06/24/2009

The Rock (Tony Dodd) played a mercenary and a hard core one just like the rest of the Marines
Armageddon (David Keith) plays a general not an easy task so he plays a highly important person (Michael Clarke Duncan) plays a bad ass guy who rides a Harley that people don’t mess with.
Independence Day (Will Smith) first let’s get it right, he is in the Marines not the Air Force. If we are going to perpetuate BS lets do it right. Not only is he a Marine but a Marine aviator which means a collage graduate. Let’s move to his love interest, in the movie she does not appear to be unintelligent, nor your typical stripper meaning she is hot in the light not just the dark.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 05:09 PM on 06/26/2009

Transformers (Bernie Mac) he plays a used car salesman, typically a white guy stereotype trying to fleece everyone (so I will say this one is bad because I don’t like any car salesmen). As for Jive I assume you mean Jazz (Darius McCrary) I thought was cool, but maybe that’s because I am not black. (Tyrese Gibson) in my most humble opinion plays a highly skilled and heroic character (who by the way is in the Air Force). For those who do not know in the two years between the movies he manages to go from a Tech Sergeant to a Chief Master Sergeant a feat that for all intensive purposes is impossible and yet his character does a black man mind you while his white officer cohort manages to move up one rank from Captain to Major.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 05:10 PM on 06/26/2009

Maybe I am wrong since I am not black, but these all seem like strong characters to and in most cases show bravery in the face of insurmountable odds(and yes I know they are movies).

Disclaimer I am a horrible speller and did not have a proof reader so please no attacks on that, and before anyone starts jumping on the this is coming from the typical white guy I am in reality the typical Mexican guy.

Pretty much all of these computer animated movies have versions of these characters in them. I think it's just lazy writing rather than racism. There's the stoner, the redneck, the ghetto black kid, etc. Using a stereotype is just easier than developing a unique character. Toy Story, Finding Nemo, Cars, Robots, Bugs Life, they all use common stereotypes instead of characters, and they are still seen as creative because they are disguised by the animation, and the main audience is kids who are too unsophisticated to see it.

But you know, it's good to call out these movies for being crap, however you want to frame it.
