LOS ANGELES — Harmless comic characters or racist robots? The buzz over the summer blockbuster "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" only grew Wednesday as some said two jive-talking Chevy characters were racial caricatures. Skids and Mudflap, twin robots disguised as compact hatchbacks, constantly brawl and bicker in rap-inspired street slang. They're forced to acknowledge that they can't read. One has a gold tooth.

As good guys, they fight alongside the Autobots and are intended to provide comic relief. But their traits raise the specter of stereotypes most notably seen when Jar Jar Binks, the clumsy, broken-English speaking alien from "Star Wars: Episode I _ The Phantom Menace," was criticized as a caricature.

One fan called the Transformers twins "Jar Jar Bots" in a blog post online.

Todd Herrold, who watched the movie in New York City, called the characters "outrageous."

"It's one thing when robot cars are racial stereotypes," he said, "but the movie also had a bucktoothed black guy who is briefly in one scene who's also a stereotype."

"They're like the fools," said 18-year-old Nicholas Govede, also of New York City. "The comic relief in a degrading way."

Not all fans were offended. Twin brothers Jason and William Garcia, 18, who saw the movie in Miami, said they related to the characters _ not their illiteracy, but their bickering.

"They were hilarious," Jason said. "Every movie has their standout character, and I think they were the ones for this movie."

Story continues below

In Atlanta, Rico Lawson said people were reading too much into the characters. "It was actually funny," said Lawson, 25, who saw the movie with his girlfriend in Atlanta.

That was the aim, director Michael Bay said in an interview.

"It's done in fun," he said. "I don't know if it's stereotypes _ they are robots, by the way. These are the voice actors. This is kind of the direction they were taking the characters and we went with it."

Bay said the twins' parts "were kind of written but not really written, so the voice actors is when we started to really kind of come up with their characters."

Actor Reno Wilson, who is black, voices Mudflap. Tom Kenny, the white actor behind SpongeBob SquarePants, voices Skids.

Wilson said Wednesday that he never imagined viewers might consider the twins to be racial caricatures. When he took the role, he was told that the alien robots learned about human culture through the Web and that the twins were "wannabe gangster types."

"It's an alien who uploaded information from the Internet and put together the conglomeration and formed this cadence, way of speaking and body language that was accumulated over X amount of years of information and that's what came out," the 40-year-old actor said. "If he had uploaded country music, he would have come out like that."

It's not fair to assume the characters are black, he said.

"It could easily be a Transformer that uploaded Kevin Federline data," Wilson said. "They were just like posers to me."

Kenny did not respond to an interview request Wednesday.

"I purely did it for kids," the director said. "Young kids love these robots, because it makes it more accessible to them."

Screenwriters Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman said they followed Bay's lead in creating the twins. Still, the characters aren't integral to the story, and when the action gets serious, they disappear entirely, notes Tasha Robinson, associate entertainment editor at The Onion.

"They don't really have any positive effect on the film," she said. "They only exist to talk in bad ebonics, beat each other up and talk about how stupid each other is."

Hollywood has a track record of using negative stereotypes of black characters for comic relief, said Todd Boyd, a professor of popular culture at the University of Southern California's School of Cinematic Arts, who has not seen the "Transformers" sequel.

"There's a history of people getting laughs at the expense of African-Americans and African-American culture," Boyd said. "These images are not completely divorced from history even though it's a new movie and even though they're robots and not humans."

American cinema also has a tendency to deal with race indirectly, said Allyson Nadia Field, an assistant professor of cinema and media studies at the University of California, Los Angeles.

"There's a persistent dehumanization of African-Americans throughout Hollywood that displaces issues of race onto non-human entities," said Field, who also hasn't seen the film. "It's not about skin color or robot color. It's about how their actions and language are coded racially."

If these characters weren't animated and instead played by real black actors, "then you might have to admit that it's racist," Robinson said. "But stick it into a robot's mouth, and it's just a robot, it's OK."

But if they're alien robots, she continued, "why do they talk like bad black stereotypes?"

Bay brushes off any whiff of controversy.

"Listen, you're going to have your naysayers on anything," he said. "It's like is everything going to be melba toast? It takes all forms and shapes and sizes."

Exactly.

Make a issue when one does not exist and get the card playing hypocrites to crawl out from under there rocks.

It is an issue and it's not hypocrisy to highlight an example, among many, where stereotypes are used for comedy. I don't think it's funny at all

What specifically is hypocritical?

Based on your post, I'm not sure you know what the word means.

Are you people serious? It's just a movie. This article isn't even written by anyone of color (Cohen & Morgenstern & Lemire). I didn’t hear of anyone complaining until this stupid article.

Get your panties out your arse. First, if you were paying attention to the original movie, after Jazz introduced himself, Sam asked 'How'd you learn to talk like that?" Prime answers, "We learned Earth's languages from the World Wide Web." AND if you’re really smart, You'd noticed that Ironhide picked up a bit of southern Clint Eastwood. "You feeling lucky Punk!?" Furthermore, Scatman Cruthers voiced the original Jazz from the cartoon. He’s always been hip. The “robots” choose who and what they liked best. Anyways, they initially wanted to go with a Sean Connery impersonation. That's lame.

If I wanted to take a trip on the crazy bus, I could say the Decepticons are a bunch of angry white men hell bent on destroying the world to obtain the Ullllltimate Powa! How’s that for stereotyping?

It’s really sad when you have people talk of boycotting a movie because it has hip robots. I grew up watching the Transformers and was giddy as a schoolgirl when they released a live action movie. Haven’t seen #2 yet. Guess what?... I'm going to. HEHE!

Finally, all the Gungans spoke like Jar Jar. At least you can understand what they are saying - unlike those dam Ewoks – jungle bears.

Meesa thinkin yousa all besa crazzzzyyyyy. Theesa robots, not even real okeyday.

Ummmm! I don't think that anyone is making fun of Blacks. You guys are reading WAYYY too much into this.
With all the wars and famine and the whole world going to hell in a handbasket, I think you people need to lighten up. I'ts so bad now that we can't even recognize racism if it slapped up in the face.

Quit crying wolf! and grow some cajonas!

And did it ever occur to anyone that killing off Jazz was necessary to introduce other similiar characters like skids & mudflap? Like there is a whole story behind the motives and not some conspiracy theory to kill the "black" robot. Several Decepticons were also killed you know. I think they were the "white" robots. wink wink.

I must say that I am LMAO! This is the first article I've posted to on HuffPo and I thought my first post would have been about something more meaningful or serious. Instead I'm debating black robots vs. white robots. How stupid is that?? You can't make this stuff if you tried ;)

I think you've been had...hoodwinked....bamboozled...led astray...run amuck! by some white guy who conveniently outlines that fact that all races were included in the menagerie that is called transformers 2. Just what is his point, this Jordan Hoffman. Why does he feel the need to accuse other white people of racism towards blacks? Is he race baiting? I think so and all the stupid lemmings are going down the hill.
I know my history. I also know when and where to pick my battles. This article is a piece of crap!
People have cried wolf for so long, that you can't even recognize true racism. No one even takes us seriously especially now since this crappy article came to light.

Yea i agree with you somewhat, with 12:00 coming up on the doomsday clock from every angle you can look at it from, I think it's much more important to realize that hollywood and moviegoers waste billions of dollars on Shitbombs like Transformers 2 every year, rather than quibble about tasteless content.

Besides, if you want a real blaxploitation movie, look at Precious.

You might be right but it sounds like you are not very rooted in American history. People in this country treat others the way they are taught to through media. Media can get people to hate, love, respect or disrespect people they have no contact with. In fact movies and other media can get people too send their sons and daughter to die in places they never heard off.

I don't think anyone would like to see the old racial film caricatures from Birth of a Nation or similar movies dredged up again. However, robots are robots. They are not people, and they have no race. There is no such thing as a "black robot" or a "white robot." Moreover, street-slang is very prevalent in today's youth culture, and it certainly is NOT unique to African-Americans. If one is attempting to market a movie that appeals to contemporary youth, then one needs to use the language youths employ in their daily lives. I live in San Francisco, and every day on the public transit system I hear young people speaking in "street slang," and these youths come from all different racial, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds. If the only issue is that the robots speak "jive" (and REALLY how out-of-touch is the author to use an expression that dates back to the 1920's and went out of popular use in the late 1970s, except to refer to a type of swing-dance?), then I don't believe there is a problem. There are so many more important issues affecting African-Americans (and other minorities) which makes this simply not a battle worth fighting.

"robots are robots"

So are you saying there's no set of racial stereotypes and voices that you'd find racist or offensive as long as they just slapped it on a robot instead of a human character? Just because it's a robot, anything goes and it's impossible to be racist?

I usually hate the PC Police, but this movie is disgustingly, blatantly racist. I seriously suspected the last one was, and thanks to the wave of complaints, it has confirmed those suspicions.

Bay usually isn't so blatantly racist in his movies. Are Pentagon/Army officials writing these scripts? They supposedly have heavy influence on the movies because they have given Bay access to their equipment. If this is the product of some racist Army official, he needs to be fired. The movie is also basically US Military propaganda. Goebbels would have been proud.

Yay for jive!

People need to get a grip and learn to take a joke. This is an old classic from Airplane where there were two black guys on the plane speaking in heavy slang, so they get an old white lady who says she "speaks jive" to translate. Its harmless.

I don't see white people complaining like this about Kenneth Parcells on 30 Rock who is clearly a stereotypical backwoods redneck on the show who jokes about family incest, alcoholism and ignorance. I mean there are plenty of characters like this across all media, and its only offensive if you take offense. It also works pretty well for comedic effect if you let it.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:26 PM on 06/24/2009

You don't see white people complaining about Kenneth because he's not the only white character on the show.

In Transformers are there any robots voiced by black actors who aren't idiots and buffons (the robots, not the actors)?

look, I haven't even seen it, there is no way for me to determine how bad it is, but the same holds true for you. Further, white guys critiquing the history of racism in movies and the black roles in either voice or acting is a little offensive. Let's just say you don't understand why black people might be angry about the depiction and leave it at that. I'm sure the rape scene in Observe and Report was funny for guys, how many women thought that was a great scene? You aren't offended by people speaking in a black vernacular and talking about not being able to read... ok, some people are.

Also, cross racial amusement can be problematic. The last I checked Tina Fey was white and so is Michael Bay. Put a little color in the room before you decide unilaterally that it isn't offensive.

Anybody else find it interesting that one of the voices described as "conspicuously cartoonish, so-called black voices" is actually the voice of a black man? Jar Jar Binks was also voiced (and physically performed) by a black man. I guess African-Americans just can't do cartoonish voices without it being considered racist.

Seems to me the only person raising any issue here is the author of this article. Again, as a poster below said, the Transformers had to 'learn' their personalities and language using radio and television. Get over it. Had this article not even bothered to be written, no one would have even cared. Now, people are up-in-arms over a non-issue just for the sake of being up-in-arms and feeling like they're PC.

I so agree.
What a rediculous article. I did see the movie. It was good and I didn't think any of it was inappropriate, just silly robots with voices that would blend in to their disguise as is the point of the movie. If you haven't seen the movie (or both of them for that matter) and can't follow the reasoning behind voices that the robots have adopted to better disguise themselves amongst the humans which they attained from the web or airwaves, then you really can't make an informed and accurate assessment. Your assessment is based solely on a self aggrandized movie "critic"s opinion which makes you just end up sounding more ignorant than a racist.

Were you really planning on seeing this movie in the first place? It's an insipid action film marketed primarily to youths. Somehow, I suspect it wouldn't have been first on your list under any circumstances.

Also, as I said in my other post, while I certainly wouldn't want to see the resurrection of Birth of a Nation-type film racial stereotypes, I don't think so-called "jive-talking" robots really present a problem. First, robots are not human, and as such, they have no race; it's not like showing a white actor running around in black-face or having a real black actor portray a sort of "Uncle Tom" character. Second, many contemporary youths from all different ethnic, racial and socio-economic backgrounds use "street-slang." It's not unique to African-Americans.

Finally, with so many real injustices in the world to worry about, I cannot imagine this silly movie should top the list of major concerns. Have we really reached the point where slang-speaking robots are considered "offensive?" If so, we are WAY too thin-skinned.
