Inglis

Wall Street Journal:

South Carolina Rep. Bob Inglis made a name for himself in the late 1990s as one of Bill Clinton's most zealous pursuers, an impeachment "manager" who attacked the moral failings of the president with a gusto that earned him a devoted following in the staunchly conservative "Upstate" of conservative South Carolina.

But with his governor now felled by similar temptations, Inglis sees an opening for the Republican Party, a chance to "lose the stinking rot of self-righteousness" and "to understand we are all in need of some grace."

So it's more Christian to be forgiving than it is to be judgemental? What an interesting concept, and it's only about 2000 years old, so it's nice to see Inglis and others finally catching on.

There's only one question I have:

If the Republicans lose "The Stinking Rot Of Self-Righteousness," what will they have left?

From what I'm reading, this guy has "changed his ways" - he's gone from moralizing to observing the gospels and being less judgmental.

Okay. Good for him. If only more self-righteous Christians would start following their religion.

Turns out, if you read the article, that he's lost favor among his former base of evangelicals.

Apparently the bible-thumpers in SC don't believe in Christ-like values.

When you fall out of grace with the mainstream of "Christianity" , you've gotten it right. That's what Jesus did.

Once you take your beliefs into the political arena and start imposing them on others you have crossed the line. We shouldn't even know this guy is Christian...

Nobody is more self-rightous(and hypocritical) than the Superstitious Right and the Politicians who represent them... They all act like pillars of Morality and point their fingers at everyone else, attack gay marriage as a violation of the "sanctity of marriage" whatever that means... while they lie to their wives, cruise their gay urges and generally abuse everyone that isn't GOP...

The Party of Hypocrisy.

Is Inglis the next man to be found out? And is it another woman, hookers or a man?

A hypocritical argument from one of the guys who helped but the "stinking rot" in place to begin with.

Well of course NOW he wants everyone to be forgiving and not so self-righteous. Now that one of his own has fallen. That's incredibly big of him. Or incredibly hypocritical. How typically Republican. So when we find out that Sandford had an affair with a man in Argentina (which is what I believe happened) instead of a woman, will all still be forgiven? Probably not. EVERYTHING can be explained away and forgiven of Republians by fellow Republicans except homosexuality.

These men (and they are mostly men) are disgusting.

The Stinking Rot Of Self-Righteousness. A good name for a heavy metal band. They're opening for Metallica.

Look, Mr. Sanford was just practicing good neoclassical economic sense. As Homo Economicus, his job is to distribute scarce resources that maximize utility. In this case, the scarce resource is Sanford himself. He realized that in order to truly maximize the return on his resources, he needed economies of scale. Therefore, he "got busy" with the Argentine woman. True, he was torn between the teachings of Lord Jesus and Saint Milton, but didn't the Bible tell him to be fruitful and multiply? And didn't Saint Milton tell him that by diversifying his customer base he could reduce his fixed costs per unit and realize a better return? And didn't Saint Ayn teach that he mustn't be trapped by trivial human emotions such as empathy and useless moral judgments?

I put it to you that he was simply following the teachings of what passes for Christianity.

They can't stop being self righteous because one it's a sleazy tactic and they're sleazy people and I believe they've all got a personality disorder.

They seem hellbent on destroying the US, because that's certainly what their policies would do to the country if they were allowed to continue unchecked. More tax breaks for the wealthiest swine and more weight put on the backs of the poor and middle class.

You know, these same kinds of people have afflicted societies since ancient times. Conservatives always refer to the Fall of Rome being caused by rampant sexual excess, but a cursory reading of the histories of the time show quite clearly that they fell because conservatives destroy everything they touch.

Another bible thumping self righteous politician with no vision. These people are so busy trying to find flaws in everyone else but themselves that they miss the whole point of the bible.

The Bible is a moral compass that is not to be taken literally. It was written and rewritten so often that it has lost its original translation. Follow the word of God - right - in todays conditions, half the population would be stoned for adultery, millions would be executed for murder and whatever is left over would be walking around with no hands because of theft. Get a grip people, it is a MORAL COMPASS not a how to do book. Until the hypocritical Republicans, pastors and priests learn that we will be going backwards forever. Religion should be banned from politics.

If the GOP ever got themselves a conscience, they might be viable as a party again.

Agreed! IMO, you can condense it to one line: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. (or, love your neighbor as yourself...)

The more people who really follow that, the happier we will all be.

(some would add, "Love God")

Good old Sean Hannity. Proclaiming last night that the Republican Party is still the party with morals and the Liberals just don't seem to have any. And its the liberal press making poor Gov Sandford the bad guy.

The party of family values it seems for all intents and purposes don't value their families very much.
