It is not important whether you call it kidnapping, or captured. What is important is that he was not given red cross visits . They didn't allow any contact for the parents to know that or if he was alive. He was in uniform and if he is to be considered a POW , and should be accorded by the rules of the Geneva convention. before any of you say it otherwise, the gitmo prisoners are terrorists not wearing uniforms so that they can be recognized as soldiers. So they should not be treated as such

Are Israeli political prisoners given visits from the Red Cross / Red Crescent?

While I'm not arguing that Israeli treatment of Palestinian prisoners is just or fair, they do get access to the red cross.

It is my understanding that the "Red Crescent", more or less a ME version of the Red Cross has had access to him.

It's a catch 22, isn't it?
How do you fight a guerilla war...while in uniform. Not very reasonable, is it?
Made worse by having the invading powers label your defense of your country..as terrorism.

All of those conditions are implemented on Palestinian prisoners as well, including children under the age of 16.

The IDF breaks the Geneva concentions every day, and they certainly dont have the moral high ground dictating prisoner welfare.

['The Palestinians in the Occupied Territories live under a Pinochet-like regime. They can and do disappear in the middle of the night. They are blindfolded, cuffed, beaten, humiliated, taken to unknown locations with no information given to them or their families, tortured physically and psychologically and incarcerated indefinitely, often without charges and regardless of whether they are guilty of anything. It is arbitrary and it can happen to anyone.']

http://peoplesgeography.com/2007/07/14/avigail-abarbanel-on-the-israeli-police-state/,

Israel holds 700 child prisoners aged 12-17 in Israel jails. Their treatment of them is illegal.

"the gitmo prisoners are terrorists "

What's the proof? Were they tried and convicted. Why were so many of them released after years of tortured? It has been proven that most of them are innocent. The Uyghurs is one such example.

All of the Palestinian in Israeli jails are political-prisoners for resisting the illegal occupation. The are NOT Terrorists. Resisting the occupation is legal under the international law.

All the hot air about this guy. I can well understand that his parents and friends and people who know him well would want for him to come home; that's only to be expected. But the rest of the world jumping on this bandwagon it's just like when Princess DI got killed with all that frantic and unseemly hysteria by people who didn't know her.

It just goes to show how people can be manipulated especially when they can't think for themselves and are gullible with it. This guy was a soldier; Palestine is under occupation; international law and the Geneva conventions state quite explicitly that occupied people have a right to resist and expel the occupiers. He was captured, and as such is a POW until hostilities are over or the combatants decide to strike a mutual deal.

And considering that Israel has over 11000 Palestinian uncharged, untried and unconvicted prisoners in their own Guantanamo Bay several of them underage children, women and elected Palestinian MPs, isn't it a bit of a nerve the west which has colluded in torture and renditions getting up on their sanctimonious high horse? Or is one to conclude that some people and their blood are worth more than others?

Professor Dr. Stanley Collymore.

He was not in a mission, he was not in the territories, he was at his home base. If you are to assume now that Israeli soldiers taken from Israel are war prisoners, you are stating that there is in fact a war not a conflict. If that's the case, the claims of the Palestinians about opening the crossings for allowing people and goods are invalid. Blocades and embargos are valid options in a war, correct?

Israel insists it's a war. How many "war zones" have they declared in the West Bank? Didn't they declare all those mosques, hospitals and apartment buildings in Gaza to be "military targets?" Israel is certainly talking and behaving as if this is a full scale war.

What the original article fails to mention that it was Shalit's kidnapping that ignited the (ultimately pointless) retaliatory bombings on Lebanon in 2006 (with Israel and Hezbollah both declaring victory.) I had always wondered what had happened to the person in the center of all of that, and I'm glad to hear he's still alive and will be reunited with his family.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:43 PM on 06/25/2009

Wrong.
The abductions on the Lebanon border was a separate incident.
Nevertheless, there are lots of recriminations by the Israelis against Gaza on account of Shalit. Just yesterday UN supply trucks were blocked from entering Gaza by fanatic Israelis who want to block all aid as long as he is a captive.

Schalit wasn't kidnapped in Lebanon he was kidnapped in Gaza. What happened in Lebananon was first; Hizbullah killed three soldiers. Second; they kidnapped the dead bodies. Third; Led Israel to believe they were still alive. Fourth; Would not return the bodies. Fifth; war. Sixth; Israel pulls our because US asked them to. Seventh:; Bodies returned after long period. Hizbullah is just as guilty as Hamas.

Schalit wasn't kidnapped, period. He was an active duty solder so his capture makes him a prisoner. If you're willing to lie about that, then why should we take the rest of your post seriously?

Prisoner exchanges are usually good

Although I believe the proper word would be arrested, not kidnapped. Unless we are going to start calling people in Israeli prisons kidnapping victims

Gilad was not arrested. He was not even accused of committing a crime. His innocence is not in dispute. He indeed was kidnapped, and Hamas is demanding a ransom for him. Perhaps Israel too readily arrests suspected "terrorists" and holds them without trial and due process. But the two situations are neither moral nor legal equivalents.

Soldiers who are on active duty who are captured are PRISONERS, not kidnap victims.

He was not arrested. Gilad was just a soldier doing his Job. The Palestinians that Hamas wants out of Israeli prisons are not innocent prisoners, they are suicide bombing planners, high-level Hamas leaders and Terrorists. They are not for a noble cause of having Israelis release all innocent prisoners. Israel has made many concessions but Hamas has done nothing but shoot rockets at them.
