DAMASCUS, Syria — The top Hamas leader on Thursday welcomed what he said is "new language" by President Barack Obama toward the Islamic militant group _ part of Hamas' cautious outreach to Washington in recent weeks.

In a televised speech, Hamas chief Khaled Mashaal avoided any mention of the recent turmoil in Iran, even though the Islamic militant group is backed by the Tehran regime.

Earlier Thursday, Iran's hardline president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, accused Obama of meddling because of growing U.S. criticism of Iran's clampdown on opposition protesters. Iran's other militant ally, the Lebanese Hezbollah group, has sided with Iran's ruling clerics.

Hamas has been trying to reach out to the Obama administration in hopes of breaking out of its international isolation and prying open the borders of blockaded Hamas-ruled Gaza.

The U.S. and Europe consider Hamas a terror group and have said they will only engage if Hamas recognizes Israel and renounces violence. Hamas has rejected those conditions, saying it cannot make such concessions up front.

In a speech to the Muslim world earlier this month, Obama insisted that Hamas meet the conditions, but also suggested the group could play a political role in the future.

"Hamas does have support among some Palestinians, but they also have to recognize they have responsibilities," Obama said at the time. "To play a role in fulfilling Palestinian aspirations, to unify the Palestinian people, Hamas must put an end to violence, recognize past agreements, recognize Israel's right to exist."

Mashaal on Thursday praised what he described as "Obama's new language towards Hamas."

"It is the first step in the right direction toward a dialogue without conditions, and we welcome this," he said.

However, he said the U.S. must respect the Palestinians' democratic choice; Hamas overwhelmingly won Palestinian parliament elections in 2006.

The Hamas chief-in-exile also said Obama remains too sympathetic toward Israel, despite the president's pledge to work hard for the establishment of a Palestinian state.

"Obama spoke widely about the suffering of Jews and their Holocaust in Europe but ignored the talk about our suffering and Israel's Holocaust that has been going on for decades against our people," he said.

Mashaal also railed against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who said in a recent speech that Israel would retain sovereignty over all of Jerusalem, keep building in Jewish settlements and demand Palestinians recognize Israel's right to exist as a Jewish state.

"The enemy's leaders call for a so-called Jewish state is a racist demand that is no different from calls by Italian Fascists and Hitler's Nazism," Mashaal said.

Mashaal said his group will keep working on a prisoner exchange with Israel to win the release of hundreds of Palestinians in return for Israeli soldier Gilad Schalit, who was captured three years ago near Gaza.

"So far, the Israeli intransigence has stopped all efforts but we are still ready to reach a prisoner exchange," Mashaal said. "Netanyahu's only choice to get back Schalit is a serious deal."

Mashaal called on Obama to pull out Lt. Gen. Keith Dayton, the U.S. security coordinator in the region, who is supervising the training of Palestinian forces in the West Bank.

Hamas overran Gaza two years ago, leaving Western-backed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas only in control of the West Bank. Abbas has been clamping down on Hamas in the West Bank since the Gaza takeover, and some 2,100 U.S.-trained Palestinian forces play a key role in that effort.

Mashaal said Dayton's force "is the main obstacle to the success of Palestinian reconciliation talks" that are being sponsored by Egypt.

Mashaal said a Hamas delegation will be flying to Egypt to take part in Sunday's talks with representatives of Abbas' Fatah movement.

My father was an immigrant and I am an immigrant. I know firsthand what that experience is like. Whether it is through displacement, free will emigration, war, or other causes, one builds a new life in another location, and becomes part of the nation one lives in. Most of the time the children have the nationality of the country they were born in. It takes several years to make the switch if one was born in one country and later moves elsewhere, after that one belongs and lives in one country, and still has ties and bonds with the other. At what time should one stop speaking about *return*, and IF one *returns* should those who came after you, bought your house, made a life, just move over and hand everything to you on a golden platter? This never applies to emigrants, why should it apply to *Palestinians*? The Iraqui *Palestinians* lived in Iraq for over a century! By what reason were they evicted after 100 years? Immigrants in a new country are expected to lead their own lives and be responsible for their own destiny after a few years. Why is that different for *Palestinians*? Many *Palestinians* were never that at all. Arafat, for example, was an Egyptian with an Egyptian father!! Why are others responsible for *Palestinians* welfare, payment of government personnel, water, electricity, foods, and even an Army with which they can and will attack Israel, and possibly others?

Ah, as usual selected quotes from Hamas. There was a full SPEECH by Mashaal, but we are not seeing one word printed here. Apparently there were also declarations by Abbas. He is proud of Fatah terrorism. True, not true? The speech by Mashaal, who indeed lives in Syria, denounces everything, or almost everything either Mr. Obama has said, or Mr. Netanyahu has said. Both will not recognize Israel, either as a jewish state or a non jewish state, but Mashaal has specifically denounced Israel and the idea of a jewish state, because he wants Palestinians to return there. After 60-some years, or longer, that will be quite a mass migration, and unrealistic. In Gaza the first thing they did after handover is destroy everything. Quite helpful. Will they do that if they *return* to Israel, and where will they live? How will they earn a livelihood, and how will they educate their children? It is all just a lot of posturing. After three or more generations, are people still *Palestinians* if they ever were that at all? How about the *Palestinians* evicted from Iraq just recently, who are now in Jordan? Like Mr. Netanyahu's speech or not, he had positive suggestions, a.o. on economic collaboration.

The West must recognise Hamas . . . and the Israeli's have to realise . . . that the holocaust does not excuse their treatment of the Palestinians . . . . the Palestinians are not responsible for European anti-Semitism and the holocaust . . .

israel breaks international law every day . . . and has committed more human rights offences than any other country . . . the holocaust is no excuse for inhumanity to other human beings . . . the israeli's are illegally expanding . . . at the expense of the Palestinian people . . . it is time for UN sanctions and trade embargoes . . . I doubt anything else will bring the israeli's to the negotiating table

That is really a great gig George Clooney landed. He does a PR piece every week or so, and his credibility is enormous. Women love him.

Does this mean they will no longer call for the destruction of Israel, and not act like guys who belong in straight jackets?

No, it does not, and Mashaal made that clear in his speech. Abbas has chimed in. He too is very proud of the terror Fatah carries out and has carried out. There was a video on www.road90.com just recently, made by a visitor to Sderot, not a jew, not an Israeli, which shows kassam attack and life in Sderot, fallout centers being built, rusty pipes and other debris, some clearly coming from the irrigation systems of the greenhouses *Palestinians* destroyed, neatly assembled and catalogued. Sirens blaring, concentric circles in the air (like in water when you throw a pebble in) after air attacks, homes destroyed, that is clearly WAR. WAR both declared and executed on Israel. Gilad Shalit is a PRISONER OF WAR. There are blimps in the sky warning about impending air attacks It really does not matter whether there is a declared or undeclared war, whether the scrapnell comes from artillery fire or a kassam. Buildings are damaged, lives are under constant uproar, children can not play out, not even on the school playground, nor can they go to school. I could not either, but that was wartime under WWII German occupation. Israel does not occupy Gaza, nor has it declared war on *Palestinians*.

Obama said -

"Hamas does have support among some Palistinians"

The majority of Palistinians support Hamas because they know Abbas is a corrupt puppet of the US and Israel. (bad intelligence or a deliberate distortion?)

BTW - I'm convinced that Hamas is far more ready for peace than Israel is.

More casualties, more difficult resupply, inferior trained and equipped fighting forces, and their major benefactor Iran looks very unstable.
