both conan and letterman are brilliant. last night letterman had on johnny depp. the interview ended when depp stated he never watches his own work. letterman was stumped. letterman tried to cover with something like, "hey i'm a guy you can have a beer with." he almost asked " hey depp ever have a beer with the guys?" it didn't work. but it was fascinating. on the competition- conan had on bruno- and bruno was clearly too much for conan. but conan dutifully played the straight man, really out of character. but again it was fasinating almost as unpredictable as andy kaufman.

Conan had his own audience. So basically it's still the same show only 1 hour earlier. They should have went for someone new.

Yeah, they should have hired someone who has no audience. The ratings would most certainly be better.

Yay, Dave!!!

I cannot stand Conan.

My "fave" is really Craig Ferguson.

But I do enjoy Dave, too!!

And putrid Palin didn't want to "help" Dave's ratings!!!

Her stupidty is the gift that keeps on giving!!!

HAHAHAHAHA!!!

The whole night time talk show ship has sailed. The never ending parade of talentless actors, actresses and comedians blowing their own horns and peddling their latest failed efforts is just plain boring. I now watch "Nightline". If that's boring that night then I go to bed early.

Sarah Palin might want to reassess how her war on comedy is working.

Go Dave!

Letterman is going to have to find a way to insult the Palin family on a weekly basis. His mediocre talent cannot sustain a significant fan-base.

Palin is a national joke that will keep giving. The GOP looking to her for leadership is the best joke ..

You simply do not like his politics and so any gaffe of temporary drop in numbers serves your purposes.

Your comments show your hand.

Know why?

Are you the kind of person who laughs after running over a squirrel? In the same vein, do you think Rush Limbaugh is humorous? Let me tell you, if you do, I can recommend a humor therapist to you: David Letterman. Then follow him up for further treatment with Craig Ferguson.

Since you are obviously a Palin supporter, this also brings into question your capacity to deal with truth and reality. Your comment "His mediocre talent cannot sustain a significant fan-base" proves the point. 1) he is considered by most in the industry a genius, and his many Emmy awards point to that fact, and 2) he has had a significant fan base for decades, which has earned CBS, and NBC earlier huge amounts of money. He is still on the air for a reason.

And to further show you what a genius he is, if you had been watching him over the last two weeks, he has been making digs at Sarah Palin and her stupidity. But he is so good at it, he doesn't even have to mention her name. But I'm sure you'd miss it; it requires both perspicacity and open-mindedness to understand and enjoy humor. Your support of Palin suggests you have neither.

I wonder if Letterman will send Sarah Palin a thank you note for helping his ratings?

Well done Sarah. Once again you shot your self in the foot while making the othe guy look good by comparison.

Letterman's skits are almost 100% self depracating. Conan's are almost 100% smarmy and cheap.

Tonight show is going down.

Letterman owes his popularity to Sarah Palin. Palin propelled Letterman into the #1 slot.

Thanks Sarah.

Letterman was popular long before Palin. He may not have gotten the ratings, but anyone who had a deep appreciation of comedy as an art form always appreciated Letterman more.

Letterman is like the Picasso of today's comedy scene. Leno was the guy who painted the holy American trinity of John Wayne, Ronald Reagan and Elvis on black velvet. There are a lot more of the black velvet paintings than Picasso's paintings. But those who know better go with the real artists.

Letterman appealed to the type that you have explain a joke to. Probably because they were so inane.

This is the sad thing about the media. We reward the worst amongst us with our attention (an consequently our money) when they do something outrageous.

I really doubt this will be a trend. Letterman lacks the talent to sustain an NBC level audience.

What is an "NBC level audience"? Are they supposedly more high-brow or discerning than a CBS audience?

And Letterman got his start with "NBC level" audiences, and some would say his best years were during his eleven years with NBC. He left when NBC chose Leno to replace Carson.
