Washington Post :

New York has become the first state to allow taxpayer-funded researchers to pay women for giving their eggs for embryonic stem cell research, a move welcomed by many scientists but condemned by critics who fear it will lead to the exploitation of vulnerable women.

The Empire State Stem Cell Board, which decides how to spend $600 million in state funding for stem cell studies, will allow researchers to compensate women up to $10,000 for the time, discomfort and expenses associated with donating eggs for experiments.

Think twice ladies-ovarian overstimulation is as painful as a burst appendix, I know, I experienced it.

Trust me when I tell you that the people who give you the protocol don't monitor you carefully and aren't particularly interested when you call them in agony.

Also, the long term effects of the hormonal stimulation are not clear, and may include increased cancer risk.

For the record, I've worked in medical research my whole adult life and am pro-stem cell research-but just understand-this procdure may not be the easy money it looks like.

SIGN ME UP! I'm not using mine and I could use the cash - being unemployed and all. Let's treat the lives we have on earth better and stop worrying about the rights of goo in a petri dish.

From a moral standpoint this is disgusting.

From an economic standpoint: this is disgusting. I want my tax dollars back.

This seems like a trivial thing to say but the photo connected with this post is inappropriate. What does the picture of a pregnant woman have to do with the subject at hand? This is analogous to FOX erroneously labeling Republicans as Democrats.

A better shot would have been of eggs, or a shot of stem cell researchers or a picture emblematic of the hope in stem cell research (cured diseases, etc.).

Sometimes HP really gets it wrong.

By the way, I think NY paying for the eggs is a valid and useful practice.

I see no problem with this. Aren't there places where guys get paid for their sperm? I don't see any difference. I also don't see any news stories about it: wonder why not...

Good for them, if they aren't planning to use the eggs the rest of the race will benefit from science, good for New York! :)

Plus it's a whole lot less demeaning way to make money when compared to stripping or porn >.>

I think it is great! I am of the mind.....of the one who wrote.....

"Keep Your Laws Off My Body"

Their bodies, their eggs, their choice.

I thought when the embryonic stem cell research legislation was signed into law President Obama said it only applied to embryos that were otherwise going to be destroyed - did he lie?

as normal you simply did not pay attention. one day a cure for your condition may be found, it would be ironic if it were via stem-cells :)

Hey, support stem cell research and get paid for it. I probably would take advantage of this offer if I lived in New York, but mostly because I'm facing unemployment and could use the money.

They can have my eggs, too. I don't need them. No more breeding for me.
