See Jeffrey Sharlet's article here: http://www.harpers.org/archive/2003/03/0079525 (Sharlet wrote the book, The Family, about this cult)

He talks about the founder of the cult, Vereide:

"There were already enough men ministering to the down-and-out, Vereide had decided; his mission field would be men with the means to seize the world for God."

"...Even in Franco's Spain, Vereide once boasted at a prayer breakfast in 1965, “there are secret cells such as the American Embassy [and] the Standard Oil office [that allow us] to move practically anywhere.”

Worried that The Family was becoming too high profile Vereide said, "No longer would the Family recruit its powerful members in public, nor recruit so many. “There has always been one man,” wrote Vereide, “or a small core who have caught the vision for their country and become aware of what a 'leadership led by God' could mean spiritually to the nation and to the world. . . . It is these men, banded together, who can accomplish the vision God gave me years ago.”"

It appears that their main recruiting method is these "prayer breakfasts". They then single out vulnerable yet powerful politicians to recruit and brainwash.

This is the same group who condemned Justice Sodomayor (sp?) for membership in women only club.

Another sublimated homo-erotically based Christian organization like "the Promise Keepers" (which is to laugh when you ask, which promises do they keep), the Bohemian Club, etc. One large christian circle jerk of hypocrisy.

"Maria" is 43 and a mother of two. That makes six children between the two. I wonder how they are liking reading about their parents, especially the salacious emails? These "values" people ought to think about that. Repubs want to mention Edwards? Go ahead, he did the same thing.

But the one difference is that Republicans go around talking and acting like they have a monopoly on morality, so it makes their hypocrisy all the more glaring and galling.

I wish they would all stop hiding behind their god and just take responsibility for their own actions. Such hypocrites.

Take responsiblity?!!!! Are you freakin' kidding, out of your mind?

Why, taking responsibility for ones actions is a secular humanist model of behavior where you are held accountable for your actions...these are Christians, man! They don't do responsibility because they have "moments of weakness"; they "surrender" to some leader that no one can see, and then, blame some other bad guy that you can't see (or drugs or their wives) for leading them away from "purity" to "sin"...see? They aren't responsible.

They aren't responsible for the split in their psyche that makes them narcissistic authoritarians both internally as well as externally...their inner Mr Pure Good Boy has to always be on guard for that inner Mr. Sinner and if he gets out...well, like Stephen Colbert said last night about an evil spirit was exorcised form gay teen, ANYBODY could be possessed now because evil has been released back into the general population looking for a new host to enter...

And that's what happened, case closed...Boy, I'm glad I cleared that up! You're welcome!

Actually in christianity, part of repentance is accepting the responsibility and consequences of your actions. So unless they man up and admit they chose to do wrong, they aren't bieng sincere.

They can fellowship and pray and bond all they want. Don't expect everyone to move on just because you made a spectacle of self-flagellation and explain yourself through religious metaphor. It's been done to death and few are buying it anymore.

Do your best to hide any religious connotations as well as you tried to hide your indiscretions and you might gain some respect.

It is very important to remember that neither John Ensign or Mark Sanford came forward to confess their sins of their own free will. They were forced to come clean after they got caught. If they had not got caught, they would still be lording their "values" over the rest of the country.

So "The Fellowship" is the shoulder to cry on for Republican sinners. Then with the personal secrets and misdeeds of the American political hierarchy in their files the right-wing Christian Republican powerbrokers have the ammunition to blackmail everyone one of these simpletons who looked for salvation for their sins of sexual perversion, adultery and the political abuse of the American citizenry from the religious of charlatans of "The Fellowship". America pays a big price for this faux religious organization which hold the balls of so many powerful politicians in their grotesque unholy hands. So obviously whatever the advice and counselling they were given by "The Fellowship" didn't stop Ensign and Sanford from carousing and violating the "moral code" of the "Family Values" church of the Republican Party who for all we know patted John and Mark on the back an said "Don't you boys worry, now that we have your info you are cool to carry on. After all you are Republicans, your mantra is hypocrisy and now with our blessings you're on a mission from God. It helps explain the uniform sleaziness of the Republican leaders.

This from an article about the C Street Center in 2001:
"Some of the congressmen who lived there also shared an interest in a good time. Baldacci and two of his congressional cohabiters at the C Street Center were among the subjects of a Vanity Fair magazine article that appeared in December, 2001. The gossipy piece by Vicky Ward ( " The Capitol buildings ooze sexual tension " ), portrayed nine congressmen boisterously partying it up with lobbyist-invited, attractive young females at Washington’s Capital Grille restaurant. The session of " rowdy " song and drink took place on September 13, 2001, immediately after some of the congressmen returned from viewing the damage at the Pentagon inflicted by the terrorist attack."

"But it is not uncommon for residents to invite fellow congressmen to the home for spiritual bonding. "

Is that what the kids are calling it these days?
