Stewart On Sanford: Just Another Politician With A Conservative Mind And A Liberal Penis (VIDEO)

Huffington Post   First Posted: 7/26/09 Updated: 5/25/11

Jon Stewart

Jon Stewart apologized last night for having said South Carolina Mark Sanford was on the Appalachian Trail having sex with a coyote when in fact he was in Argentina having sex with a married woman.

Sanford held a press conference yesterday after being missing for seven days. He apologized to his wife and four sons for the betrayal and resigned as head of the Republican Governors Association. Stewart, who had hunkered down for an exciting announcement with popcorn and movie-sized soda, was disappointed saying:

"Oh, marital infidelity, you're just another run of the mill human being whose simple moralizing about the sanctity of marriage is only marred by the complexities of their own life. Well just another politician with a conservative mind and a liberal penis."

Stewart was, of course, referencing Sanford's views on marriage which he thought should only be between a man and a woman.

Comedians on television need to stop apologizing to politicians for making jokes about them. First Letterman, now Stewart? The First Amendment is meant to protect us from the government, not the other way around.

I remember Rush Limbo cracking wise about former president Clinton, and continues to do so with current president Obama. Why isn't Rush forced to apologize for his comments? Why is it the Right continually asserts their First Amendment rights, yet denies that same right to everyone else?

You DO realize that Jon Stewart's "apology" was SARCASTIC, right?
07:39 PM on 06/26/2009
oh.... the right get away without apologizing..... you must mean Don Imus.... who apologized and than got FIRED!

What you should be asking is about all these so called non political, non profit groups that come to the aid victims like the Ruttger Girls Basketball team, or single mother, or women in the workplace.... unless of course that women is a conservative...... is running for VP and has a single mother for a daughter.....

I'm from South Carolina, and did not vote for Sanford in 2004, but I think it's funny how people here not from South Carolina label this guy as a Christian conservative to bash him. He is a Cato Institute Libertarian, who is indifferent to social issues as long as taxes are low and the government is not involved in people's economic lives. Sanford is much more liberal socially than many Democrats in the state, particularly rural Democrats from poor cotton and tobacco farming districts. Why do you think so many people from his own party despise him here? The Upstate Republicans don't like him because he's not an evangelical conservative and he is pretty much silent on social issues, and the rural Republicans, aka former Dixiecrats, don't like him because his economic policy is staunchly laissez-faire. The guy has screwed up his life, his marriage, his relationship with his mistress (a woman he obviously loves), and his political career and and future. Let him be, let his family be. It's sad when people in this country on both sides of the aisle witness a family's destruction and seem to be excited about it because it might aid their political party's aspirations.

What's sad is when holier-than-thou people try to tell others how to live and then show they don't practice what they preach. I'm sympathetic to his innocent family involved in all this but he's reaping what he himself sowed. A supposed presidential hopeful even.

Indifferent to social issues? Didn't I hear hear him say on CNN during the Clinton impeachment fracas that Pres. Clinton had "lied under a different kind of oath; the oath that he made to his wife"? Perhaps he is only indifferent to his own social issues. And, more importantly, if you or I left our jobs without notice or warning for a week, and left no contact number or explanation, chances are we'd be, like so many other people these days, jobless!

This is why I think the right-wingnuts are so qualified to talk about the evils of gay marriage.
01:27 AM on 06/26/2009
People are ignoring what this is really about. This back and forth about his infidelity is just smoke and mirrors. He's doing this to steal stimulus money. There may not even have BEEN an infidelity. Even if there was, it's not the true issue. Like my friend said to me, dollars to donuts he's got that stimulus money in a nice offshore account around South America somewhere.
04:00 AM on 06/27/2009
Yes, he has a stimulus plan, and I believe her name is Maria.

The sooner we reach the stage of "open marriage" the better off we will all be. So called indiscretions stimulate the libido and in an understanding marital relationship are completely acceptable. It's time to grew up Americans. We are sexual animals and should not have all these off-the-wall religious views controlling our behavior.

So you're not for open marriage you are anti religion.

I say the government should get out of the marriage business completely. It is just an old religious ritual that has no real meaning in today's world. If you want to get married you do it through your religion however your religion desides. There could be gay religions for gay marriages. If you want to get divorced you also do that through your religion. Keep the courts out of it. There are way too many people getting rich from marriage and it ought to be stopped.

That way us athiests wouldn't have to get married at all.
11:21 AM on 06/26/2009
If you want on open marriage and have a partner that agrees with you, then do it. I have a couple of friends who have had an open relationship (and subsequent marriage) since the late 70's. It worked for them. Its not my thing, however, and my husband and I have kept it together for 26 years.

What makes Gov. Sanford's relationship news is how hypocritical he has been. No one is shocked anymore when someone has an affair. BUT, whether it was a Democrat or Republican who strayed, he always trashed them, called for their resignation. He still keeps talking about god's laws, even as he admits his adultery.

People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.
