BANGKOK -- In Thailand's tropical deep south, public school teachers are known to carry more than pencils and lesson books in their knapsacks. Many also tote handguns -- and with good reason.

Along with soldiers and cops, teachers are A-list targets for insurgents fighting for an independent Islamic state. Largely unknown in the West, the guerrilla war to establish a Sharia-law sultanate has recently added dozens of casualties -- bringing the conflict's deaths to 3,400-plus in this decade alone.

Among this month's dead: two schoolteachers, one of them eight months pregnant, ambushed with AK-47 fire on their afternoon ride home. Insurgents spared four Muslim teachers in the same pick-up truck and allowed them to drive off with their bleeding co-workers.

One expert on the insurgency, Zachary Abuza, estimates that teachers account for 4 percent to 5 percent of the separatist campaign's killings. To the militants, public school teachers are "agents of assimilation," said Abuza, a professor at Boston's Simmons College and author of the book "Conspiracy of Violence: The Insurgency in Southern Thailand"

"They teach in the Thai language -- the national curriculum -- and try to socialize Muslims into being good Thai citizens," Abuza said. "The (public) schools are often the only manifestation of the Thai state in rural communities."

The insurgents are known as hard-line Malay dialect-speaking Muslims whose ancestors inhabited an ancient coastal sultanate called Pattani. Though Siamese forces annexed their land more than 100 years ago, bitterness has been passed down through generations, and the war still roils within driving distance of Thailand's touristed coastline.

Since the killing campaign heated up earlier this decade, Thailand's south has been heavily patrolled by soldiers and run under emergency decrees that allow martial law-style raids and detentions. While the insurgents have reached a stalemate with Thai troops, their killing of public school teachers has proven quite successful.

The majority of deep south students now attend private Islamic schools, leaving Buddhist-centric public schools with "skeleton staffing and short working days," said Duncan McCargo, professor of Southeast Asian politics at the University of Leeds. Hundreds of less-fortunate schools have been reduced to smoldering embers by arsonists.

"Government schools are largely empty, operating at between 10 and 60 percent capacity," McCargo said. "The staff has been largely localized. Muslims have replaced many of the Buddhists who used to teach in these schools. But even the local Muslim teachers feel very unsafe." Muslims seen as collaborators are also heavily targeted.

The growth of Islamic schools may be paying off bonus dividends for insurgents, according to an International Crisis Group report released this week. Separatist teachers, the report said, are secretively recruiting young male secondary school students and indoctrinating them under the guise of football training.

Other watchdog groups, such as Human Rights Watch, have also condemned the systematic targeting of educators. "There is no excuse for such brutality," said the group's Asia director, Brad Adams, who described the trend as "sickening." In past years, teachers have been beheaded or doused with gasoline and set on fire.

Public school teachers are more than just symbolic targets, Abuza said. Compared to other agents of Thai authority -- police and troops -- they're relatively easy to kill. They often commute along rustic back roads lined by endless rubber tree farms in "regular patterns and fixed routines."

Thailand's Defense Ministry has even announced plans to arm teachers with 9mm handguns and rifles, with 4,700 firearms set for distribution to educators and community watch-style defense volunteers.

"Teachers are very anxious, especially in the rural areas," said McCargo, who conducted hundreds of interviews in the region for his book "Tearing Apart the Land: Islam and Legitimacy in Southern Thailand."

"Many teachers have guns -- anyone who wants one can easily get one -- and have been trained to shoot, often by military instructors," McCargo said.

This month's rash of killings -- against teachers, civilians and even Muslims knelt in prayer at a crowded mosque -- has signaled that the south's military occupation is not taming the violence.

Thailand's current premier, Abhisit Vejjajiva, has conceded that the solution will likely rely on economic solutions, not troops. He has even controversially suggested that setting up a Quran-derived Sharia law in the southernmost provinces could ease the crisis.

Meanwhile, separatists who struggle for a long-lost Muslim state have plenty of incentive to prey on public school teachers.

It's a "win-win," Abuza said. "Schools have shut down for months at a time, which further convinces Buddhists to leave the region. And Muslims are compelled to enroll their children in privately run madrassas."

Islam has within it a form of deep and transformational spiritual practice, whose objective is the opening and activation of the human heart as an organ of perception; this cannot be properly understood by anyone whose heart is entirely closed and dead. That so many who call themselves Muslims are wholly unaware of this, that they have reduced Isam to a mere mechanism for aligning people behind political agendas and for social control of the individual, is a wholesale tragedy. The term "Islamist" may become useful so long as acts of murder like this are being committed by the ignorant: Islamists might be used to refer to those who worship Islam, as a political and religious institution, while Muslims will continue to be used for those who worship the Unitary Source of Existence which sustains the universe. These acts of murder demean the name Muslim, as they demean us as a species. That a teaching meant to unite the diverse human community is now used to divide it is, again, tragic. The time has long since arrived when discourse and argumentation must supplant all forms of warfare; there was a time when Muslims led the world in rational discourse and the sciences, as well as poetry, mysticism, and music; if the practices of Islam are to again invigorate our future, that history must be rediscovered, and the madness of murder and mayhem abandoned. There is a better way forward, and nothing will be lost for having adopted it.

The main threat is the same from all fundamentalists no matter what their religious stripe: the belief that it is not enough for them to follow their own religious conscripts...the law of THEIR religion should be forcibly imposed on all of us.

"The long-term goal of Christians in politics should be to gain exclusive control over the franchise. Those who refuse to submit publicly to the eternal sanctions of God by submitting to His Church's public marks of the covenant–baptism and holy communion–must be denied citizenship."

-Gary North, Institute for Christian Economics

"After the Christian majority takes control, pluralism will be seen as immoral and evil and the state will not permit anybody the right to practice evil."

-Gary Potter, Catholic for Christian Political Action

"I don't know that atheists should be considered citizens, nor should they be considered patriots. This is one nation under God."

-George Bush Sr, former President of the UNited States

"Yes, hate is good...Our goal is a Christian nation. We have a biblical duty, we are called by God to conquer this country. We don't want equal time. We don't want pluralism."

"When I, or people like me, are running the country, you'd better flee, because we will find you, we will try you, and we'll execute you. I mean every word of it."

-Randall Terry, Operation Rescue

Whenever I hear of this kind of thing I think of Liberty University and the Dover, PA school board. It's the same thing without the killing.

This is antiIslamic, Allah and Muhammad would be appalled....
Doesn't the Koran say something about revering educators or something like that?
But then again I guess these separatists are illiterate are are told what to believe and don't question it
antiIslamic in itself.

it seems in almost every country around the world now Islamic extremists under guidance of their imams are waging Jihad against education. What are they afraid of?

They are afraid that Muslim children will become educated and will be able to understand religion for themselves. If that happened then how will they be able to push their beliefs onto the children they want to join their ranks? They are not only attacking places of 'worldly' education but places of religious education (mosques etc) so that they can hijack Islam to suit their own world view and geo-political motives. Knowledge about the world, about all religions, about the good and the bad etc is central to Islam, the first commandment revealed was 'read' (seek knowledge, even if this involves travelling to China said the Prophet--remember that in those days this journey would be carried out mainly on foot or on camels/horses and would take months) and 'jihad' actually means an internal struggle for Allah (meaning, question and then seek the answers until your inner being is satisfied, do not be blindly faithful).
I can assure you that educated Muslims around the world, many of whom were not fully aware of the baddies that are committing evil under their name reject them.

Dont distract from truth by mentioning GOP. read up on
how muslims do not integrate with secular /democratic host countries they now call home .In every secular democtaric country where muslims have all the rights still want to separate and have an Islamic country . Interestingly its only Muslims separists. There is always Recurring theme of victimizataion of muslims even though muslims enjoy FULL rights in secular homecountries, but of course their allegiance is to the greater nation of Islam.

read up on privileges of non muslims in muslim countries , if at all they are allowed to exist thatis . The muslim motto is ' muslims will follow muslim customs in secular countries, of course non muslims must follow muslim customs in muslim countries. Usingdeocratic institutions ( unheard of in muslim countries) muslims are imposing Islamic customs in secular countries and to rally for separation.

There were HUGE Violent muslim protests about Danish cartoon of Mohammed, but not a word of shame expressed when Taliban destroyed 2000 year old stone Budha in Bamiyan. There is hardly an awareness amongst people of Afghanistan that their region had a thriving pre Islamic civilization.
before you can address a problem you have to acknowledge truth .

can you just accept that even the GOP can be right, as they are about Islam? Just because members of the GOP believe something, doesn't mean its false. Most Democrats also see Islam for what it is: imperialism. You choose to have this ridiculous knee-jerk reaction to the truth, which sorry, sometimes isn't nice against people who may happen to be non-white. Get over you political correctness already.

This seem to me to be page one of the insurgent's play book. When I was a GI in Thailand in 1968-9, a Thai friend was the widow of a school teacher assassinated by guerilla insurgents, most likely Vietnamese or Lao communists. Communism never took hold in Thailand because they are a fiercely freedom loving people. I also seriously doubt a Muslim insurgency will overtake a strongly Buddhist nation, but we shall see.

Muslim extremist (to be honest Muslims period) in Thailand are taking advantage of the fact that majority of Buddhist don't carry guns unless they are in the army. There equipment is not good enough to put up a real fight with the army, so they pick on school teachers, children, or the elderly. It's real pathetic. The only ones they don't try to kill are foreign volunteers or other Sunni Muslims. They are doing all this killing over the fact the Thai government actually wants them to speak Thai and respect Thai culture. Most of them are not really Thai, but Malay who want to make southern Thailand another Malaysia. It's really a shame, I hope people can come to their senses and respect each other.

So true: Who remembers now that Afghanistan was once a thriving Budhist/Hindu civilization that predated Islam by 4000 years , with universities and a culture steeped in art and science. The people were not prepared for the brutal Islamic invaders who in a few hundred years wiped out entire civilization , destroyed monuments , temples ; last remaining Bamiyan Budha was destructed by Taliban recently. Muslims are not keeping track of cultures they destroy! Invaders changed names of cities e.g. Khandahar from Gandhara. So no body knows what Afghanistan was before Islam. All that remains are some exquisites Gandhara stone carvings in Japan and India. Same is true in parts of India and in East Asia. Who knows about Pre Islamic civilization in Indonesia, Malaysia? Today these countries have Islamic culture. The peaceful people did not have the means to fight Islamic invaders. Now there is an effort to convert Thailand to an Islamic culture. .... Democratic and secular countries must be aware that Islamic values are being forced upon secular countries using democratic means!

4000 years before Islam is about 3300 BCE, right? When did the universities arise? Khandahar and Gandhara are very close, an example of where G=K(h), and when I take out the vowels, I have, Kh-NDHR=G-NDHR. It seems as if both names derive from the same proto-semitic root.

Education is dangerous to religious fundamentalism of every stripe. Knowledge and thought are incompatible with the ignorance necessary to spread and maintain religious ideology. That's why American Christian fundamentalists pull their kids out of school and try to ban books that displease them, lest the kids acquire some knowledge and learn to reason.

The Thais are going to have to deploy a lot more resources to this problem. It's been festering for a long time, and it's time to put and end to it once and for all. They have the wherewithal, but not the political will. They fear an all out war will frighten away the tourists around those southern beaches.
