Walter Cronkite

New York Post:

In order to set the record straight, Cronkite's three children, Nancy, Kathy Cronkite and Walter (Chip) Cronkite III sent me an email that read, "In order to dispel false rumors, Walter Cronkite's family want it known that, sadly, he is very ill and is not expected to recuperate; he is resting at home surrounded by family, friends and a wonderful medical team. We thank everyone for their prayers and good wishes."

Sad to hear of his failing health and emanate demise. Journalists of his caliber and integrity are a rarity. May his remaining time on this celestial plane be pain-free, surrounded by those he loves.

This is a helluva lot more newsworthy than Michael Jackson's death!

Now - Walter Cronkite has been an 'icon' in the lives of Americans - and has contributed so much more to the quality of our lives - than Michael Jackson ever thought about.

Blessings and prayers - to Mr. Cronkite's family at this time.....

I totally agree. I'm 24 and even though I wasn't alive during Mr. Cronkite's tenure with the CBS Evening News, I know what he's done and he is a true legend. Millions of people trusted and believed in this man.

Sending good thoughts out to his family....

He was from the day when news reporting was a respected profession. One automatically assumed that someone like Walter Cronkite would never intentionally mislead or lie.

Today, one can turn on Faux News, and automatically assume that one is being lied to and misled. On most of the other stations, News consists of pretty faces reading what is handed to them, without the TV personalities understanding what they are reading.Things have turned completely around from the way they used to be.

It is not necessary to assign relative merit to this news.

I am glad that Mr. Cronkite, the last true great television journalist, lived to see through the nightmare of the regime of Herr Miserable Failure to see the election and inauguration of President Barack Obama.

Cronkite is a class act. He was a true journalist, a fact-finder and fact-checker, never relying on spurious sources for information. Cronkite was a gentleman and a calm voice amid the storm of national hysteria many times. This man will truly be missed when he passes.

He always came across as a gentleman and a real professional. Whatever happened to real journalism that we are plagued with news readers?

Fox has it all wrong with "fair and balanced". Fair and balanced means an anchor or host can tell a story without the viewer even knowing which political party he belongs to. Cronkite was like that and the last of his dignified breed.

Cronkite and others who strive to emulate him = journalists of integrity.

Faux News = the journalistic equivalent of gonz0 pr()n.

What a sad thing to know, but Walter Cronkite was the legacy to journalism that Farrah and Michael are to pop culture....and Ed McMahon's legacy with Johnny Carson.

I remember, all too well, how he broke up when he had to tell the world that JFK had died. It broke his heart.

Walter Cronkite will always be the person I think of when I think of wonderful journalist and anchor man.
He will always be the platinum standard for what a journalist should strive to be.
Sadly, today, there is no one like him. Journalism has goneby the wayside and instead, we are left with opinion news and sensationalism etc.
I long for the old days of Walter Cronkite, because that was real journalism, the way it was meant to be.
God Bless you Walter Cronkite Sir.

Reading the posts about Cronkite, I cannot even imagine these beautiful things being said about even one television news anchor today.

How far television news has fallen. It's nothing but a tabloid now.

Agreed. I hear praise for Anderson Cooper, for instance, but when I compare him to the likes of Walter Cronkite, I scoff. Mr. Cooper may not be a schill for Rupert Murdoch, but he is no Walter Cronkite, or any of the other greats from the middle of the 20th century.

He was a fine, fine news man. I miss the day when he was the face of the news.

Television still had some integrity back then.
