The Washington Independent:

It was supposed to be a magical day: the day when, in response to an agreement reached in a lawsuit brought by the American Civil Liberties Union, the Obama administration will declassify an important document in the history of its predecessor's apparatus of torture. I refer to the 2004 inquest undertaken by ex-CIA Inspector General John Helgerson into the CIA's interrogations and detentions programs. The Bush administration released an almost-totally-redacted version in May 2008, and despite the Obama administration's pledge to disclose a more-detailed version of the document, it punted the disclosure a week ago Friday to today. "We can only hope that this delay is a sign that the forces of transparency within the Obama administration are winning over the forces of secrecy and that the report will ultimately be released with minimal redactions," ACLU attorney Amrit Singh said last week. "The CIA should not be permitted to use national security as a pretext for suppressing evidence of its own unlawful conduct."

Yeah, if only. The Obama administration won't release the document today. According to the ACLU, it's asked for a three-day reprieve. ACLU's consented. Game Day is now supposed to be July 1.

Well, by all means let's release the report! That way we can *completely* negate any lingering goodwill that Obama's visit to the mid-east may have accomplished. Also, we might (with a little luck) get some of our troops knocked off by vengeful insurgents! That will show the world how even-handed we are, eh?!

Give me a break! The war destroyed the goodwill this region had for us, our support for repressive regimes has destroyed the goodwill. The idea that insurgents are going to "angrier" if we release this report is preposterous! Our troops shouldnt be there! Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11. Why is it a problem if the government releases the photos?

Transparent becomes cloudy on its way to opaque.

Thanks for the change.

This report wouldn't change anything ... Cheney the War-Monger will still be Free ........ I've said over & over ... there would've been no prosecution or indictments .... & if there was it would be all theatrics ........ Many here bashed me for saying this .......... but I have been proven right .. Over & Over .........

Stop here still have hope ......... which is pitiful & pathetic so say the least ...

The world is watching

Pres Obama is looking to his reelection and figuring to the base will stay with him no matter what>

of course Cheney has some of his moles in the DOJ>CIA>SUPREME COURT>FBI>TREASURY>

While Pres Obama talks nice his actions leave alot to be desired> I suppose its ok to offend both sides of the aisle it at least shows he isnt all the way partisan>

my biggest disappointment is how he is treating the banks: they get bonuses and main street getss fired

the banks gets billions and even trillions and the car companies have to beg for a pittance

the banks get yes yes yes and the states get no no no

Pres Obama is owned by Wall Street and main street is owned by?? well main street isnt even the bastard child

I voted for Pres Obama as I thought he was the best man for the job and knew what to do but I am rethinking that thought>

Hopefully Pres Obamaa will get its act together and grow some b alls and do the bidding of those who brung him to the dance>

the wolrd is watching

“As disclosed through references in the footnotes of the 2005 Office of Legal Counsel memos, it documents how the agency took the OLC’s legal imprimatur for certain abusive interrogation techniques and expanded those techniques in practice to, among other things, waterboard Khalid Sheikh Mohammed 183 times, denying him sleep for a week by contorting his body into unnatural positions, and restrict his diet to between 1000 and 1500 calories a day,”

"War crimes will be prosecuted, war criminals will be punished and it will be no defense to say, 'I was just following orders.'" -- President George W. Bush, March 13, 2003, on the eve of the Iraq War.

Let the trials begin.

Maybe I'm hoping too much, but I really wonder if this, and and a few other matters, are all part of a much larger plan to neutralize the Repubs for good.

The GOP, as admitted by members of their own party, is a death spiral. They are desperately looking for anything that might reunify them and bring back some power. If Obama right now pushed for these memos to be made public, or ending DADT, or gay marriage, or any other right wing base issue, it might just be enough to pull the party back together. So, why not wait, and allow them to self destruct, then push these issues through with no fight?

If it's redacted it aint transparent and it aint good government of the type By the People, For the People.

Will we have to riot in the streets like Iranian's to get our government to be transparent?
