Colbert: The Problem With Exorcisms Of Gay Teens Is That They Put Gay Demons On The Loose (VIDEO)

I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Stephen Colbert

A Connecticut pastor created a stir this week after a video of her performing an exorcism on a gay teen hit YouTube. Pastor Patricia McKinney of Connecticut's Manifested Glory Ministries then went on CNN to "let the world know out there that Manifested Glories Ministries is not against homosexuality. We do not hate them. We do not come up against them. We just do not believe in their lifestyle." And to explain that her church believes in different kinds of spirits: "You have the alcohol spirit. You have the crack cocaine spirit. You have the adulterous spirit. Everything carries a spirit." McKinney claims the exorcism worked and the young man is no longer gay.

This was all too much for Colbert to pass up, so last night he explained that he whole-heartedly supports exorcisms except in cases when they release gay demons into the atmosphere to prey on unsuspecting heterosexual Christians. He is prepared, however, to ward off this "gaytergeist," with his signed picture of Charlie Sheen and Wilt Chamberlain biography.

New excuse when Mom catches you making out with the next door neighbor: "A gay demon inhabited my body! I didn't know what was going on!"

This is too sad to be even funny, though in principle such ignorance is often hilarious. If I believed in any of this, I would pray for him. Instead, I shall read some Shakespeare, or Victor Hugo.

Poor children trying to grow up in a world of emotionally and intellectually immature adults. Clearly the Stone Age has not come to an end yet.

One in 10 people are gay, get over it people, gay people are here to stay, they aren't going to go away.

I have a gay family member.

Everyone deserves to be respected no matter what their
sexual orientation is.

I applaud same sex marriage. Canada has same sex marriages.
Why doesn't America step up to the plate and allow same sex marriages in all of their states not just some.

Gay people have had to fight for many years to have have their rights respected in all areas of their lives.

I wish Chaz Bono much success in his determination to be who he wants to be and that takes a long of courage on his part to come out publicly and say who he really is.

Thinking critically, don't people have a FREEWILL to make their own personal lifestyle choices??? Answer: yes, they do. One can also argue that this teenage boy CHOSE to go to this church and he also CHOSE to go forward to have this pastor do the exorcism. If the boy did not want to go forward, all he had to do was leave this church and never go back. Many times in life we are "victims" of our own choices; good/bad, right/wrong choices...by our own freewill.

So, from a performance criticism point of view, I think Colbert didn't get to what could have been a really, really great bit. Partly, the writing failed him; it lacked a strong middle so the ending fizzled. Once he spoke "gay demons," it all went downhill. And, his delivery was choppy. He never got a good rhythm to the words. Hopefully, there was a technical flub with the prompter.

The concept was a riot, though. I hope that he continues with the series, something like Gay Demons of Alameda County, for example. That could work. It would be a little gayxploitation for a higher good.

My best friend was "exorcised" just before i met her in college. She was slammed repeatedly into a wall until she passed out. They said that the demons were fighting the good inside; that was why her pupils were all wacky. Finally, three days later, her mother pushed her way into the room, rushed my friend to the hospital where she stayed for two weeks recovering from a severe concussion. I think their exorcism put the demon into her because she promptly left religion and started wearing a lot of black and getting a lot of tattoos. That's when we became friends. So, watch out for unintended consequences, all you exorcists out there, you might just be creating demons of the gay, straight, bisexual, transgender or witch variety. Mwah, hah, hah

Being gay is an inherent state of being, just that simple--as being straight is as well. Gay people have various lifestyles as do straights. Their choices are the same; that is celibacy, monogamy, or promiscuity. Gay men, in general, tend to be more promiscuous. Herein lies the "gay lifestyle" argument that holds justification for criticism.

But, an intolerant society makes it much worse. A gay guy may live a duo life for "protection". He may be married to a woman and "play" out on the side--certainly, not fair to the wife. Or, if single, he will remain alone in order not to have to introduce a lover to family or friends or coworkers that aren't accepting. In other words, it is the greater society's intolerance that actually causes more promiscuity and a lack of lasting relationships in gay men.

I am male and thinking of gay men here, but gay women have the same difficulties, of course. Although, society focuses mostly on gay men.

If gays would just be accepted as who they are and not ridiculed, more stable relationships would appear. Strong relationships should be promoted by society-- straight or gay. And all people should be accepted for who they truly are. No one should have to try to be someone they are not. Historically, that is what gay people have had to do which sad and not right.

This religious thing is utter nonsense and always has been.

Some gay men are no more promiscuous than are some straight people. The entire human race is wired to be promiscuous. We make choices to be monogamous but it is not natural. Promiscuity, cheating, infidelity are part of the human condition, like heterosexuality and homosexuality.

You are so full of it it hurts. The reason why man is promiscuous because he easily falls into sin. Monogamy is natural and is what God actually intended for mankind.

I think you are right here as far as how we are "wired". It is difficult for males to be monogamous--hence, all the affairs that go on. But, the human brain has evolved over time and we know that it is wiser to be monogamous. It is fulfilling to have a loving relationship with one person and it definitely is healthier. No std's to worry about. Nature is a better controller of population and we all know what happens when there is promiscuity and reckless behavior--sickness and death. That is the only "plus" with promiscuity---population control. But it would be more humane in our modern world to control birthrates rather than be ill or die from HIV for instance. Just how I'm thinking here. I am a nonconformist, so my thoughts are more out there---but what I have said makes sense to me!

As "Brian" (QAF) once said when asked why gay men cheat? is it because we're gay? and he responded, "no it's because we're men"

Actually Stephen is more correct than you (or he) may realize: If you read the New Testament's take on demon possession (the man called 'Legion') -- see Luke 8:26 - 37, you read that Jesus released a bunch of demons who were possessing his spirit and tormenting him. After Jesus released those demons from him (in what we would call an 'exorcism' today), they had to go somewhere-- so Jesus permitted them (the Bible's own words!) to enter a herd of swine, who subsequently drowned themselves (verse 32- 33). Could you imagine if those demons were "gay demons" instead of these particular ones? They could very well have entered OTHER STRAIGHT PEOPLE to turn them gay!!!!! See http://www.anunseenworld.com/legion.html for more info on demon possession.

BTW, people who do exorcisms have to be very careful that the demons they are exorcising do not enter THEMSELVES OR OTHERS! But that's why there are professional exorcists (which we are not)....

Everyone is entitled to their own beliefs, but I'm still completely incredulous that a lot of people in this country take the Bible so literally, despite the fact that not a single word about Jesus was written until years after his death by people who'd never met him and had little or not contact with those who did know him.

If this incident really did take place, IMO Jesus probably cured the guy of epilepsy not demonic possession.

Off on a tangent, but I agree about this Bible thing. I grew up in the Bible Belt but I never could "buy" into it. People preach from it, but few people live by it. And there is a lot of mean stuff in the Bible as well.
I just think all the various books of religion around the world were written by men-- simply attempts by men to come to terms with their mortality and fear of the unknown. We are the only beings that live our lives knowing we will die some time in the future. Life is so difficult, many hope for something better on "the other side". Of course, "the other side" has been set up for only an elite few. That is interesting!

Anyhow, religion is all based on ancient mythology and tribalism---and, it has evolved over the years just as man and all living things have evolved over the millions of years past.

I personally am agnostic. I am imperfect, but basically know right from wrong. I try my best to do what is right. If I do wrong, I try to make amends and say I am sorry. To me, that is what it is all about on an individual basis. Just do the best you can and let good win out. I don't need a religion to do this.

The Old Testament (Hebrew ) was finished 200 years before Jesus (if he existed). The New Testament (Christian) is the edited Old Testament, in other words a new version of Judaism.

Omg I feel sorry for the kid who had the exorcism and all the other guys who probably did too.
I mean when are people going to stop using the name of GOD to support their points of view. The pastor said "we do not believe in their lifestyle"...uh its their lifestyle, you are not supposed to believe in the way people live. These people who are clearly bigots use religion and God to verify their prejudice.
