SULLIVANS ISLAND, S.C. — South Carolina first lady Jenny Sanford sat in her oceanfront living room Friday, recalling how her husband repeatedly asked permission to visit his lover in the months after she discovered his affair.

"I said absolutely not. It's one thing to forgive adultery; it's another thing to condone it," Jenny Sanford told The Associated Press during a 20-minute interview at the coastal home where she sought refuge with their four sons. They were her first extended comments on the affair.

She said that when her husband, Gov. Mark Sanford, inexplicably disappeared last week, she hoped he was hiking on the Appalachian Trail, as his staff told those who inquired about his absence. That he had dared to go to Argentina to see the other woman left her stunned.

"He was told in no uncertain terms not to see her," she said in a strong, steady voice. "I was hoping he was on the Appalachian Trail. But I was not worried about his safety. I was hoping he was doing some real soul searching somewhere and devastated to find out it was Argentina. It's tragic."

The Sanfords had separated about two weeks ago. She said her husband told the family that he wanted some time away to work on writing a book and clear his head. The first lady said, "I had every hope he was not going to see her."

"You would think that a father who didn't have contact with his children, if he wanted those children, he would toe the line a little bit," she said.

Sanford, who is staying at the official residence in Columbia, returned Wednesday to end days of speculation on his whereabouts, publicly confess his cheating and emotionally apologize.

Jenny Sanford, a Georgetown-educated, former Wall Street vice president, did not stand next to her husband Wednesday during his pained public confession.

Sanford said she discovered her husband's affair early this year after coming across a copy of a letter to the mistress in one of his files in the official governor's mansion. He had asked her to find some financial information, she said, not an unusual request considering her heavy involvement in his career.

She would not comment on what was in the letter except to say "enough to figure out an affair was going on."

She felt "shocked and obviously deeply hurt. I didn't think he had it in him," she said. "It's hard to find out your husband is not who you thought he was."

The first lady said she confronted her husband immediately, and he agreed to end the affair. She said she wasn't sure Friday whether he had done so.

"I guess that's what we will have to see. I believe he has," she said. "But he was down there for five days. I saw him yesterday and he is not staying here. We'll just see what kind of spirit of reconciliation he has himself."

The governor declined to discuss details of the letter and how he handled it with his wife.

"This goes into the personal zone," Sanford said Friday. "I'd simply say that Jenny has been absolutely magnanimous and gracious as a wonderful Christian woman in this process."

Jenny Sanford cried at the end of the interview, and said the couple have been to counseling.

"When I found out in January, we both indicated a willingness to continue working on the marriage, but there's not room for three people in a marriage," she said. "I've done everything in my power possibly to keep him from going to see her and to really make sure she was off the table, including asking him to leave."

About an hour after Jenny Sanford talked of her pain and feelings of betrayal, her husband brushed aside any suggestion he might immediately resign, citing the Bible and the story of King David _ who continued to lead after sleeping with another man's wife, Bathsheba, having the husband slain, then marrying the widow.

"What I find interesting is the story of David, and the way in which he fell mightily _ fell in very, very significant ways, but then picked up the pieces and built from there," Sanford told members of his cabinet in a session called so he could apologize to them in person and tell them the business of government must continue.

Meanwhile, questions grew about a trip to Argentina he took last summer. While Sanford has agreed to reimburse the state for part of a more-than $8,000 tab that enabled him to see the mistress, state officials indicated they never intended a South American economic development trip to hold meetings in Argentina. That was only done at the governor's behest, said Kara Borie, a spokeswoman for the state Commerce Department.

Sanford spokesman Joel Sawyer said he did not immediately know whether Sanford's request for business meetings would have allowed him to have taxpayers cover the entire Argentina visit.

Some Republican leaders have called for Sanford to resign and some lawmakers and watchdog groups are pressing for investigations into whether he improperly used state money.

For Jenny Sanford, the focus is the couple's four sons. During her interview, she wept as she displayed the stellar report cards earned by her eldest two sons at their exclusive private school in Columbia.

On the coffee table was a collection of devotional books, including a book of commentary on the Bible's Book of Job, the story of a man whose faith God tests to the extreme.

"Parenting is the most important job there is and what Mark has done has added a serious weight to that job," she said.

This is not exactly a sympathetic portrait of the Mrs. She comes across as controlling (he ASKED to go see his mistress?), sanctimonious (Bible this and Bible that) and manipulative ("if he wanted his kids he'd toe the line").

She is going about this reconciliation like an investment banker doing a deal ("the mistress is off the table", quite an interesting malaprop) not like a wife trying to make her marriage work.

Granted, Mark Sanford is a weak whining creep, but she wants to stay married to him.

I don't think you can publicly humiliate someone in to loving you and I think she is also using her religion as a weapon. And if she is so concerned about her sons, why did she do an interview with the media? She should have kept her trap shut.

Sounds like that marriage has been a sham for years and he wants out, she wants to maintain the artificial front, I think this may be true of most political marriages. All lies.

People fall in and out of love everyday, the 'evil' isn't in his personal dealings with Ms. Sanford, that is their business. Sandford a.k.a. Promise Keepers used the cover of the Church to preach values that he himself found burdensome to handle. And, while the Church may be a starting point when things go south in a marriage, it appears that he and his wife needed a real professional, not what appears to be an enabler; which seems to be what his friend was doing.

There may actually be some changes slowly occuring in some circles of the dominate culture; because 20 years ago, the dutiful wife would have kept her mouth shut and endure the various relationships for the good of her husband's career and her reputation. We must be mindful that no group of females have watched their powerfully connected spouses cheat on them with impunity; she even watched as black, brown and tan babies were brought into her home, and kept quiet and alive.

This is alot larger story than simply the Sandfords.

It seems that Sanford would be the one retaining a criminal lawyer, not the other two or three women he has had affairs with.

What I don't understand is why are the other women Gov Sanford had affairs with retaining criminal lawyers. It's strange, that's all they are talking about on the SC blog.

I know she is a hard-nosed political insider and a tough political enemy judging by her prowess and political opponents she knocked aside for her husband - but - I'm glad she did NOT stand by Gov. Sanford at the press conference. New precedent for political wives, you do not have to be humiliated twice.

Jenny Sanford's tug at the heartstrings is nauseating! So her two kids get outstanding grades. What's that got to do with the affair, Mark or the family for that matter.?! Seems they're doing ok in spite of dad's philandering, Jenny. And the coffee table books heavy on the devotional genre with a commentary on biblical Job! C'mon, it's all too theatrical, doncha see? She's perfecting her act so she can take it on the road: either on a book tour; to divorce court or up to the state's- or nation's- capitol.

No doubt Mark's got a few screws loose: filing a copy of la inamorata's letter under " financial" then asking Jenny to take a look-see to find "some information." Failing to secure his personal emails. Skewing his visit to South America so that the itinerary could include a stop in Buenos Aires.

Then Jenny's disingenuous remark about Mark's disappearance saying she hoped the governor was doing "some soul searching" on the Appalachian Trial! O, she may have talent to project the goodwife persona but her woe-is-me script was written by a hack. Yeah, Mark's no saint but he does take two to do the marriage tango. Perhaps that's part of the reason he was practicing some new steps with another .

I'm getting the impression folks here are using the private relationship of the Sanfords to relive their own divorces and spousal confrontations. Hardly anybody here is saying it's none of my business.

If this guy even WHISPERS that he MIGHT run for president one day, this becomes our business! Remember all the sanctimonious blather that the Repubs were spouting in 1998 about "breaking the marriage vows shows bad character, which we cannot afford in our nation's president"?

People with problem marriages seem to want to make what happened to them happen to political celebrities. How this is justified eludes me. He has the right to run for President; you have the right not vote for him. Sanford's bullshit about Clinton's marriage is on a par with people's bullshit about Sanford's marriage. If you disqualify a candidate on the basis of hypocrisy, you'd have nobody left to vote for.

Hey, leaving hypocrisy aside, how about leaving a job with no explanation, no emergency phone number, and no designated alternate in charge. Us plain folk would be joining the ranks of the unemployed for that!

He made it public business when he failed the office of the Governor by disappearing.

He made it public business by gnawing at Bill Clinton for his peccadillos.

He made it our business by turning it into a PR road show.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:36 PM on 06/29/2009

If he disappeared to work in a soup kitchen, would that have been okay?

If he isn't qualified to be governor because of hypocrisy, then 99 percent of governors should resign.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I feel confident that the last thing he wanted was pr for his dalliance.

Oh, and about Mark using the David bit in the Bible??? What he forgets is that David did not leave his country unattended when he went had his trysts. He may not have been there mentally but his physical body was where it could be found. This is also not very relevant; because David had lots of wives and concubines.....

No matter how he justifies the affair - he can not justify the fact that he left his state w/o a leader & that no one knew where he was!

The David story is a bit more complicated than that.

So, where's the body? David sent the husband of the woman he lusted after into battle to be killed. If Sanford is comparing himself to David, surely there's a body out there somewhere.

Gratz, Bill Clinton, you left you mark on history!

Clinton, Edwards, Sanford, (the list goes on and on), you all let power go to your heads (both of them) and you're all despicable!

As a southern woman, a divorced southern woman, I am mildly impressed with Ms. Sanford but will be much more impressed when she has him served with divorce papers at the Governor's Mansion. And, I'm not at all surprised that Mr. Sanford is using scripture as a basis to retain his job, however, if he was a Democrat who tried that particular strategy, he would be labled a blasphemer. He should resign because he abandoned the state for a week and we paid for it. We are paying for his lovers-trysts and he wouldn't accept the stimulus package based on principles???? How much money do you think the lawyers made arguing the case? Another cost to us, he should step down, move to Argentina and fade quietly away. OH, my husband and I went to counseling as well, it worked for a while, he ended the affair, BUT he wanted to know if we saw her out and about if he could go talk to her??? He's now my EX-husband.

And a few others as well.

You know, people are allowed to try and make their marriage work and then once they realize it can't, walk away. Forgiveness, it's not a crime. Some think it's rather noble.

There is nothing wrong with that. You seem to think that Mrs. Sanford is some kind of cow because she knew about this and did nothing and yet Ms Chapur is this great woman because she loved Sanford.

Why is it any different because one woman was married and one wasn't. If Chapur knew he was still with his wife (and a few others) doesn't that make her just as much a cow as Ms. Sanford.

Your logic? it is faulty.
