Although he is beloved here, Michael Jackson's life story has little connection to New York City: he spent his childhood in Gary, Ind., began recording music in Detroit and died in Los Angeles. And although it was a performance at the Apollo Theater in Harlem that jumped-started his career, those performances seem more important in hindsight than they did at the time.
