Gov. Mark Sanford's admission to an extramarital affair with a woman in Argentina has sparked a debate within the backchannels of the GOP over how strongly the party should emphasize morality and religion going forward.

For decades, the GOP has used issues like respect for the sanctity of marriage and the notion of family values as a key component of its political platform and a point of divergence between Republicans and Democrats. A series of sex scandals involving high-ranking officials, however, has drastically altered that equation. And now some strategists are questioning whether the party should rethink the way it emphasizes these matters.

"It creates a very interesting tension for Republicans because they understand that there is a very interesting constituency that they have to appeal to, particularly in places like South Carolina, by resorting to that kind of moral values rhetoric," said Mike Maslansky, CEO of Luntz Maslansky, a predominantly conservative communications firm. "I don't say rhetoric as a means of demeaning it. Talking in those terms is a way to appeal to the base. In an election season they find it is a significant advantage to talk in those terms. Maybe for the other three years out of their term they wish that they hadn't."

The GOP, to be certain, will never get to a point where it willfully cedes the moral high ground to Democrats. The social and religious conservatives who comprise a large and vocal portion of the base won't permit such a drift. Nor, for that matter, does it make political sense. The failings of Sanford and others, they argue, were isolated and personal events and not reflective of the party as a whole.

"It is a personal tragedy that he talked about some length," said Frank Donatelli, chairman of GOPAC, a conservative political action committee, and former political director for President Ronald Reagan. "But I don't know that it has implications beyond that."

That said, conservatives have hit a rough patch in the last few years on the family values front, with Sen. John Ensign, Sen. David Vitter, and former Sen. Larry Craig all setting the stage for Sanford's own marital misconduct controversy. And there is a growing belief among strategists that Republicans might -- at least for the time being -- be better served to stress the economic components of their platform rather the social or moral aspects.

"Look, of course, we are the conservative party and we are going to have a conservative message," said Donatelli. "But I do think by talking a little bit more about economic opportunity that we as a party want to offer both at the national and state level, that is what we can do I think to broaden our ranks."

Craig Shirley, a long-time Republican strategist who has been vocal in his criticism of the party, added: "The problem with the Republican Party today is not having principles; the problem is the betrayal of principles. Frankly, I think the whole issue of 'family values' is overstated as a problem in the GOP. The Republican Party has a lot of problems, no doubt, but for every John Ensign or Mark Sanford are ten so-called conservatives undermining the Jeffersonian message of individual rights, individual dignity."

People who can't keep their pants on shouldn't be throwing stones at glass houses.

Or something like that.

Here's an idea Republicans. You mind your own business and leave me to mind mine.

Sorry but you HAVE NO RIGHT to tell me how to live. Or condemn my morals. Particularly when you folks, as a party, have been shown to immoral to the extreme.

Can't keep it in your trousers AND like to torture people.

Didn't Dante's Hell have hypocrites at one of the bottom circles? One of the worst sins of all.

I recently reconnected with a friend from school. We were talking and Pres. Obama came up. I said that I don't usually talk about politics b/c I'm sure that most of our friends are conservatives. He was one and I'm not. We're talking about all the social issues that we disagree on and then he asks if we could hook up. I was floored. Not Mr. Family Values! Oh yes and he keeps asking, even after being turned down.

Just what are you trying to say? That Pres. Obama wants to hook up with you? Do you do windows?

Anyway, we men, we're all pigs.

I guess your vast experience of one guy means that all conservative men are pigs, but you would only conclude that if you were truly progressive..

but what good are standards when they only ever apply to others? how many "believers" in a philosophy of life need to act contrary to their own philosophy before one can assume it is a flawed philosphy? 10? 2000? all but one? each and everyone?

It is not their place to push values off onto others. When they do, t hat again pushes religion into the realm of politics, which would make us a theocracy rather than a democracy. Iran is a perfect example of what happens when you try to put the two together. As for those values, we each inherently know right from wrong. It is that inherent knowing that we should follow. For instance, I know my heart and what I consider right from wrong. If I live by that spiritual compass, I know I'll be fine. Law does not always take those values into consideration. Reminder: Based on law, what Hitler did was legal. Based on law, what Ghandi did was criminal.

Family Values, or talk the talk but don't walk the walk. I doubt this kind of hypocrisy will be abandoned by the GOP. Until members of the Conservative movement start thinking (which doesn't appear to be happening) and stop their knee-jerk reactions to false morality, the GOP will always have the old, the sick and the stupid voting for them. If they actually came up with policies that were worth voting for, then the Democrats would be in trouble. But that will take a GOP sea change...and that may be far in the future.

Although, the Dems could still be in trouble. Put bluntly, it appears they lack "balls" while the GOP lacks "brains". Many voters lack "brains" as well. Can never underestimate the GOP.

"...we are the conservative party and we are going to have a conservative message,..." - Conservatives are continuously telling us not to do things that many of them end up doing themselves. And they have this bizarre notion that when they see something they don't like, all they have to do is make it illegal and it'll disappear. The difference between Democrats and Republicans is, Democrats are willing to admit they're not perfect. Republicans try to pretend that they are.

Depends, I think, on whether those values are part of their inner being(s) or just rhetoric to influence those they think are swayed by it. Funny thing is, those people who want to hear about "morals" and "values" and "righteousness" are also out molesting family members and having affairs, and want to hear and talk about those virtues to make themselves look good to others. Might as well not even mention them, and stick to political stuff. Time everyone learned that it is impossible to legislate morality.

I just cannot stand the GOP. And, unfortunately, I live in one of the more "conservative" states that are chock full of them! Anyway, I see the hypocrisy all around me all the time. The GOP and the Christian radicals go hand in hand. They don't mind committing "sin" (they say they mind, of course)--they just don't want to be caught. They love for things to be illegal---but, do them anyway. Secrets are a beautiful thing! Unfortunately, they are hard to keep!

Obviously, good behavior should be promoted by all. But the GOP and the Christian radicals? Please!!

LMAO...the GOP wants to know how strongly the party should emphasize morality and religion. That's all they do is emphasize because they surely do not live it in their lives. In fact they advocate everything against morality and religion in their behavior, words and actions. What a cesspool the GOP has turned into.

Came back to bite you in the butt, eh?

None of us is perfect, but why in the world the Republicans would fight tooth and nail for a policy that they've known for years they couldn't uphold themselves is beyond me.

Who knows, next they might figure out that if they cut taxes enough they won't have any money to pay themselves...

It always puzzled me why having an affair is considered immoral, while voting to drop bombs on civilians is considered perfectly moral. Morality is about, at the very least, not murdering or abetting to murder, large numbers of women and children.

The GOP doesn't have" family values," or any other kind of civilized values. The Republicans worship greed, religious fanaticism, bigotry and power, not necessarily in that order.
