Gov. Mark Sanford's admission to an extramarital affair with a woman in Argentina has sparked a debate within the backchannels of the GOP over how strongly the party should emphasize morality and religion going forward.

For decades, the GOP has used issues like respect for the sanctity of marriage and the notion of family values as a key component of its political platform and a point of divergence between Republicans and Democrats. A series of sex scandals involving high-ranking officials, however, has drastically altered that equation. And now some strategists are questioning whether the party should rethink the way it emphasizes these matters.

"It creates a very interesting tension for Republicans because they understand that there is a very interesting constituency that they have to appeal to, particularly in places like South Carolina, by resorting to that kind of moral values rhetoric," said Mike Maslansky, CEO of Luntz Maslansky, a predominantly conservative communications firm. "I don't say rhetoric as a means of demeaning it. Talking in those terms is a way to appeal to the base. In an election season they find it is a significant advantage to talk in those terms. Maybe for the other three years out of their term they wish that they hadn't."

The GOP, to be certain, will never get to a point where it willfully cedes the moral high ground to Democrats. The social and religious conservatives who comprise a large and vocal portion of the base won't permit such a drift. Nor, for that matter, does it make political sense. The failings of Sanford and others, they argue, were isolated and personal events and not reflective of the party as a whole.

"It is a personal tragedy that he talked about some length," said Frank Donatelli, chairman of GOPAC, a conservative political action committee, and former political director for President Ronald Reagan. "But I don't know that it has implications beyond that."

That said, conservatives have hit a rough patch in the last few years on the family values front, with Sen. John Ensign, Sen. David Vitter, and former Sen. Larry Craig all setting the stage for Sanford's own marital misconduct controversy. And there is a growing belief among strategists that Republicans might -- at least for the time being -- be better served to stress the economic components of their platform rather the social or moral aspects.

"Look, of course, we are the conservative party and we are going to have a conservative message," said Donatelli. "But I do think by talking a little bit more about economic opportunity that we as a party want to offer both at the national and state level, that is what we can do I think to broaden our ranks."

Craig Shirley, a long-time Republican strategist who has been vocal in his criticism of the party, added: "The problem with the Republican Party today is not having principles; the problem is the betrayal of principles. Frankly, I think the whole issue of 'family values' is overstated as a problem in the GOP. The Republican Party has a lot of problems, no doubt, but for every John Ensign or Mark Sanford are ten so-called conservatives undermining the Jeffersonian message of individual rights, individual dignity."

Ah yes. How easy it is to have theoretical principles.

I caught that too. And his leaving out of the second "not" struck me as an ironic Freudian slip. If that sentence had ended with a period instead of semi-colon, he'd have something.

Let's see . . . whether not having particular principles or not abiding by them equals . . . hmmmmm . . . I know! NO PRINCIPLES!
And the issue of "family values" being overstated as a DixiePub problem? What these guys do on a daily basis is make matters exponentially worse for them by simply opening their mouths. They just can't help themselves; they've practiced the fine art of hypocrisy for so long--and up until recently, so successfully--that it's become embedded in their DNA. I'm sure if you put a sample of Sanford's double-helix under an electron microscope you'd see a bunch of scarlet H's dangling from the strands.
They're beyond absurd. They've gone into a whole, new realm of pathos that future generations will look back on and brand our entire generation as complete idiots for allowing the DixiePubs eight years of unfettered rule over our lives.
And they'd be right.

Do Republicans really think that they are more moral and more religious than the rest of us? How arrogant! Who gives them the right to say those things and judge the values of others? My family goes to church every week (sometimes twice), and so do many, many others who are Independents, Democrats, etc. We also have many of the same values; although we don't condescendingly preach to others about them, try to make them the law, or act like we're the only ones with family values or a strong faith.

What really concerns me, and should concern others, is the Republicans' mockery of us and our President, their obstruction and their hateful rhetoric, their sneaky attempts to destroy the character of anyone who is more accepting of the views of others, and their encouraging of hate talk (such as the Palin talks of "palling with terrorists" from the Presidential campaign, the shouts of "Kill him" at rallies, or the latest incendiary words from "Joe the Plumber" where he wonders why no one has strung up Senator Dodd yet). These tactics and words are evil and dangerous, yet Republicans (especially the "Religious Right) smirk and applaud them. A far cry from what Jesus would do or say.

What kind of people are these anyway? Not sure they're the kind of Christians they claim to be. But that's just my humble opinion.

Most of the Christians in this ilk are "Born Again." Of course, I have always found that born again Christians are worse the second time around.

Repugnicans are obviously casting about for some sort of platform that will gather as many supporters to them but not show their true nature as the party of hypocrites, greedheads, warmongers, and torturers.

This little dance is so entertaining!

GOP = "Sexist, Egotistical, Lying Hypocritical Bigots"

There could be nothing more of a Christian Family Value than the health of each member of the family.
Nothing more Christian than helping the sick. Nothing more Christian than helping the poor.

Yet, the GOP sees "Christian Family Values" as stubbornly blocking any help for the sick and poor.

Some Christians. Some Family Values.

Little known secret. Jesus was a long hair hippy who spent a lot of time doing community organizing and public service, and hung out with sinners and thought people who went to church regularly but weren't kind were hypocrates.

Thanks for setting the record straight about Jesus (and hippies)! Just another part of history that the wing-nuts have been trying to rewrite since the Reagan years.

THIS IS SOCIOPATHIC HYPOCRISY - THIS IS ABOUT SANFORD'S POLITICAL CAREER - IT'S NOT ABOUT HIS WIFE, HIS CHILDREN, HIS PERSONAL INTEGRITY, HIS MORAL VALUES, HIS RELIGIOUS BELIEFS OR HIS CONSCIENCE - HE DIDN'T FEEL THE NEED TO CONFESS UNTIL HE WAS CAUGHT RED-HANDED - HE FELT NO CONTRITION OR RESPONSIBILITY TO ANYONE BUT HIMSELF

He was CAUGHT conducting an illicit affair by his wife SIX MONTHS ago. He BEGAN his illicit affair ONE YEAR ago, betraying his wife, his children and his so-called Christian values. Again, he didn't CONFESS to his wife, she CAUGHT him. And even AFTER his wife CAUGHT him, he CHOSE to CONTINUE his illicit affair. ONLY after his illicit affair became PUBLIC KNOWLEDGE did in conveniently develop a MORAL CONSCIENCE. What it was doing to his WIFE and CHILDREN did not CAUSE him to END his illicit affair.

He disappeared and left the country just days ago to CONTINUE his illicit affair and was CAUGHT again; this time by newspaper reporters. Again, he didn't develop a conscience and CONFESS having an illicit affair out of guilt or the need for honesty. HE WAS CAUGHT AND FORCED TO ADMIT HIS IMMORALITY, LIES AND LACK OF MORAL CONSCIENCE. What it was doing to his POLITICAL CAREER did CAUSE him to END his illicit affair.

He ISN'T ENDING his illicit affair because of what it was doing to his WIFE or his CHILDREN. He is ending his illicit affair because of what it is doing to his POLITICAL

I think it's incredibly dangerous to try to ascribe motives to people you know only in a second-hand fashion and even then not to a high degree.

It does not excuse his actions, but I'm going to belief the explanation he gave for his choice and that's that he valued the consistent but stale family unit life he had, in the end, more than the passion and fantasy he had with a fling with some exotic beauty.

But his actions, which you don't excuse, are what gives those of us who do not know the man an incredible insight into his motives.

The fact remains that Sanford continued his affair after his wife and children found out. That indicates that their feelings and well being were not more important to him than his illicit relationship. It was only after he knew the affair was about to become public knowledge that he decided to confess and end (so he says) the affair. That indicates that preserving his political future was important enough to end the affair. Therefore, as osage said, "He ISN'T ENDING his illicit affair because of what it was doing to his WIFE or his CHILDREN. He is ending his illicit affair because of what it is doing to his POLITICAL (career)."

If you read his wife's statements and consider his behavior, to conclude that he "valued" his family, above all, is ludicrous. Abandoning your children on Father's Day should have been your first clue. Lying to everyone involved and abandoning his sworn duties should have been another.

It's not about whether the "party" decides to back off on these issues, it really depends on whether the GOoPer voters themselves are willing to let go. For example, the sizable Mormon population in Nevada almost exclusively votes Republican, and has reliable supported Ensign. Now that Ensign is down in the dirt, it will be interesting to see how the MoMos react in 2012, given their strong advocacy for the "sanctity of marriage."

Yeah I'm a former-Mormon myself and the church members vote almost exclusively Republican, but Church leadership refuses officially endorse a candidate.

No disrespect intended, but I know a number of women that left LDS after ugly divorces in which the Church failed to condemn the husbands for infidelity but instead out it on the wife to "fix" the marriage. It's difficult for an outsider to reconcile the so-called "sanctity of marriage" talk with actual practice, and it is even more difficult to understand LDS tolerance of Republican politicians that go astray, i.e., Larry Craig, John Ensign, etc.

Repubs got short term gain by allowing their party to be hijacked by the religious zealots. If they went back to their core values of fiscal conservatism, individual responsibility and smaller government and leave the religion out of it they might make a comeback. As long as they let the holier-than-thous run the place they are lost. A true Republican would support Roe v Wade.

Sanford, quite frankly, is happy to have gotten out of this alive. Once word gets out that his paramour is not actually named Maria but Mariano, boy the proverbial fit will really hit the shan. Gawd fearing folk from South Caroliner will forgive a lot of stuff ...i*ncest, p*edophilia, b*eastiality, n*ecophilia, et al, but not that.

He refers to the person as Maria.

But, allegedly for privacy reasons, he has not yet produced the person.

There is no reason to believe the person is actually a female.

It could just as easily be a transvestitie or cross-dresser or just a code name of a gay South-American lover. Broad stance and all.

If the GOP removes their "family values" platform they will have only their Military/Security/Crime platform and their Economic platform left.
Oh wait! The Economic platform is STILL Supply Side or Trickle Down combined with De-regulation, which are now and for all time proven disasters.
So if they lose the Gay Rights thing, and they all know they soon will what will be the remains?

No Abortion, No Health Care, No Clean Energy, No Global Warming, No evolution or other Science, No Secular Culture, No Multiculturalism, No Education, No Environment, No Imigrants, No, No, and No...

with a platform like that they should comfortably be able to rope in a solid 20% of people which might go up to 30% as they have the one "Yes" area remaining...WAR.

War on Drugs, War on Imigrants, War on the leftist pinko commies, War on everything.
This war includes murder of Dr.s and museum Security Guards, and Cops (that want to take away their guns), and so on....

Ok they will give back about 7% and be left with a fanatical zealot type group of Teabaggers that are all dangerously stupid and think the talking heads of the Right make sense.
This begins to sound very much like the Taliban and other Muslim Extremists and Terrorists.

GOP = Terrorists ? Well if not they do = PIGS

The affairs that have befallen the republicans over the last several years could be Gods way of gently reminding the republicans, christian conservatives and others of that ilk that perhaps they should temper their attacks on the Democrats, who are also Gods children.

Or to put it another way. Don't throw stones lest you get beaned in return.
