A woman who answered the phone Friday, June 26, 2009, at Dr. Conrad C. Murray's clinic in Houston confirmed to The Associated Press that Murray was Michael Jackson's cardiologist. Los Angeles police say they want to speak to the doctor but stressed he was not under criminal investigation. (AP Photo/Houston Chronicle)

LOS ANGELES — Elvis had one. So did Anna Nicole Smith and Marilyn Monroe. They are the doctors who cater to celebrities, dispensing powerful painkillers and sedatives to some of Hollywood's best-known entertainers.

Now, as police investigate Michael Jackson's sudden death, questions are swirling around the King of Pop's personal cardiologist _ and any other doctors who may have cared for the superstar in his final days.

Dr. Conrad Murray had apparently been living with Jackson for about two weeks and was with him when he stopped breathing Thursday. The doctor reportedly performed CPR until paramedics arrived. An ambulance crew worked on Jackson at his home for 42 minutes before rushing him to UCLA Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The cardiologist has hired a Houston-based law firm, and on Saturday, an attorney there said he was cooperating.

"Dr. Murray has never left L.A. since Mr. Jackson's death, and he remains there. Investigators have indicated Dr. Murray is considered a witness and is not in any way a target of any kind," William M. Stradley told The Associated Press. He said his colleague was meeting with investigators on Saturday.

Also on Saturday, the Rev. Jesse Jackson said the singer's family wants a private autopsy because of unanswered questions about how he died and about Murray.

And Jackson's longtime friend Deepak Chopra said he's been concerned since 2005 that physicians were overmedicating the singer.

The suspicions of Jackson's friends and family fit into a long-standing pattern of celebrity doctors becoming entangled in death investigations involving prescription drugs.

Doctors can become enchanted by the glamour of the celebrity lifestyle and may find it hard to refuse potent painkillers for their clients because of their wealth and power.

"It's a big issue with people who are used to getting what they want. And if someone says no, they can pay someone else to get what they want," said Karen Sternheimer, a sociologist at the University of Southern California who is writing a book on social problems and celebrity culture.

"The physician is not immune to that heady feeling of being in a celebrity's inner circle."

In other instances, the doctors themselves may have questionable pasts or significant debts, and caring for a celebrity allows them to make large amounts of money, said Julie Albright, a sociologist at the University of Southern California.

"Some of these people might not be the most successful doctors, so the money will also buy their complicity in fueling a drug habit," said Albright, who was speaking generally and not specifically about Murray.

Records reveal years of financial troubles for Murray, a 1989 graduate of Meharry Medical College in Nashville who practices medicine in California, Nevada and Texas.

Over the last 18 months, Murray's Nevada medical practice, Global Cardiovascular Associates, has been slapped with more than $400,000 in court judgments: $228,000 to Citicorp Vendor Finance Inc., $71,000 to an education loan company and $135,000 to a leasing company. He faces at least two other pending cases.

Court records show Murray was hit last December with a nearly $3,700 judgment for failure to pay child support in San Diego, and had his wages garnished the same month for almost $1,500 by a credit card company. Another credit card claim for more than $1,100 filed in April remains open.

He also owes $940 in fines and penalties for driving with an expired license plate and for not having proof of insurance in 2000.

Best-selling author Deepak Chopra, a licensed medical doctor, said he first became concerned about the pop star's prescription drug use in 2005, when Jackson visited him shortly after his trial on sex abuse allegations.

Chopra said Jackson asked him to prescribe painkillers and already had a bottle of OxyContin.

"I was kind of a bit alarmed. I said, 'Why are you taking that. You don't need that,' and then I started to probe a little further, and after I grilled him a little bit, he admitted he was getting them from a bunch of doctors," Chopra said.

Chopra said he refused to prescribe the medicine, but over the next four years the nanny of Jackson's children would periodically call to say that a parade of doctors was coming to his homes in Santa Barbara County, Los Angeles, Miami and New York City.

She told Chopra she felt they were overmedicating him, and one time she even tried to stage an intervention with Chopra's help, he said.

Each time, Jackson would discover the nanny's calls and then shut himself off from Chopra to avoid discussing the issue, he said.

Chopra, a spiritual adviser, said he last talked to Jackson directly about his drug use about six months ago and spoke with him on the phone about two weeks before his death.

But they did not discuss drug use on that call, and Chopra said in his final months, Jackson seemed much healthier and excited about his upcoming concerts in London.

"This is a strange addiction. You cannot get these pills or injections unless a physician prescribes them, and he had this bunch of enabling doctors who were in a sense criminals. And they get away with it half the time _ and I hope they don't this time," he said.

"It's become a culture with celebrity doctors who in one sense get a sense of importance by hanging around with celebrities."

Marilyn Monroe died at 36 from an overdose of sleeping pills in August 1962. She had been under a doctor's care at the time.

Elvis Presley, who died in 1977 at 42, was known to travel with George Nichopoulos, a former physician who overprescribed drugs to clients. Nichopoulos lost his medical license but was acquitted of criminal charges related to Elvis' death.

More recently, Los Angeles County prosecutors charged a psychiatrist and a doctor with conspiring to provide Anna Nicole Smith with thousands of prescription pills.

Smith died Feb. 8, 2007, in Florida after collapsing at a hotel; medical authorities later ruled her death an overdose.

Megastars may be given more leeway than ordinary patients because of their wealth _ and because of expectations that the famous often have eccentric habits, said Albright, the sociologist.

"It's almost expected in some ways if it's a rock star or a big actor. You almost expect them to have a larger-than-life lifestyle," she said. "People are drawn to celebrity like a moth to a flame, including these doctors who want to be around that lightness and brightness."

It looks like Dr. Conrad came in at the tail end of a long line of drugs being prescribed by other doctors and taken by Michael. From the different reports from Dr. Deepak Chopra, the Jackson family attorney, the former nanny and others, it seems like it was a miracle that Michael hung in as long as he did.

Unfortunately, it seems like Dr. Conrad was at the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong person.

You may be right, but it seems that old doctor Conrad Murray had some financial problems and need ed some money, so he clearly overlooked Michael's troubled past , and saw hope for his furure. He knew exactly what he was getting into, so don't feel sorry for the doc. If you must have sympathy/empathy for anyone, let it be Michael's children!

Dr. Murray was hired by AEG, the tour sponsors. What was Murray's interest in keeping Michael working? What did he do to keep Michael out of pain and rehearsing? What benefit was it to Murray to keep Michael up and working?

This dr's doesnt seem like he was ever board certified in BOARD CERTIFIED IN CARDIOLOGY. HIS INTERNAL MEDICINE BOARD expired 12/08. Why is he practicing medicine without a license?

I think that being Board Certified isn't actually the same as having a license to practice medicine. It is a credential that physicians and others can get depending on specialty but not being Board Certified would not disallow someone from practicing medicine in certain specialties if they had the proper license for the state they are in.

Don't get me wrong. I think this Dr. stinks to high heaven and I guarantee you that something really hinky was going on but if he wasn't board certified that doesn't necessarily mean anything.

Board certification is like a stamp of approval. It gives a patient the comfort that a particular doctor has been deemed competent enough to practice. However, it is not a requirement that a doctor practices medicine who is board certified. As long as a Dr. has a medical licence they can practice.

It is true that most of the weaker doctors tend not to be up to date or never were board certified. Most serious and competent Drs have board certification. Another bad sign is a Dr. who is financial trouble. Most Cardiologists make decent money (mid $300K) so this guy had one issue after another. He was ripe to practice very poor medicine, which may have ultimately lead to wacho jacko's death.

Dr. 90210 is another who is not board certified in his field (plastic surgery).

If Jackson died from drugs, he chose this lifestyle and lived it, paid for it, and died from it. He is responsible foremost for his own death. We don't know the circumstances or what was happening in the room when the caller was calling 911. For all we know, Michael slept on a slab of cement or his bed was made of wood. He has slept on and in stranger things. Maybe the caller had picked up the phone just as the doctor came in and the Dr. was trying immediately trying to begin CPR rather than taking the time to lift him on the floor or maybe he didn't have time and the caller got it wrong in his rush. All of a sudden we have a whole thread full of experts who know exactly how they would act in this instance, but who have never given CPR or been certified in it in their lives. Quit placing blame when we don't have the slightest idea what he died from or what really happened.

True, Michael is responsible for his life, he chose to live it as he did. Please, I have a great love and respect for this artist, but we should not take responsibility from him, he owns it. Do we exonerate the doctors and other enablers? H@ll no, but allow Michael to be the adult, as he was.

Yeah.We all have responsibilities to our lives, but theres a reason why those drugs can only be obtained via prescription.

Based on what has been reported, the fact that he left his patient speaks volumes. A cardiologist (presumably on the case due to a cardiac issue) administering demerol has malpractice emblazoned in big red letters. And Jackson was preparing for a tour, having passed an exam for insurability on a grueling tour schedule. Let's see if we can guess which doctor participated in signing off on his fitness.

He is never going to be able to explain why he was attempting CPR in the bed, instead of putting him on the floor, a hard surface. Absolutely no excuse for that. And it can't be denied because it is on record as part of the 911 call that MJ was still on the bed at the time of the 911 call.

I actually thought the same thing. When I heard the 911 caller having to tell the Dr. to put him on the floor, I thought something seemed off about that. First of all he should know to put him on a hard surface so it seems like maybe he was panicking a bit, which isn't necessarily a trait you want in a cardiologist.

All speculation of course but it does seem odd.

MJ bears some responsibility for his own fate. However, a physician has an obligation to refuse care that would harm their patient. It is totally unethical to prescribe pain or anxiety medication without true indications in someone who is obviously physically and psychologically addicted to them. Someone wrote the prescriptions and they were wrong to do so.

Dr. Conrad Murray should have taken a position of caution when prescribing all medications. As a physician I assume he had a medical history record of Michael Jackson. Although Dr. Murray's actions are questionable one must realize that he may not have been entirely privy to all the medications that Mr. Jackson have been taking.

Until toxicology reports are returned, and I also believe that a second independent autopsy is underway that the truth will be revealed as to the true cause of death. Right now it all seems speculative. Although I do hope that this physician takes his oath seriously.

GOD Bless all whose hand are stained....

The doctor is a patsy for the show producers, the fall guy...They surely knew MJ was in ill-health if reports that he weighed about 110 are correct and they pbviously knew he had heart problems--thus, hiring a cardiologist for him. (An internist likely would be less expensive for them.) This cardio doc was only his physician for two weeks and Michael had been having problems with scripts for over a decade. Fairly recently he wrote a song about morphine, and if this new doctor had suddenly stopped giving him drugs, that could have killed him as well. Plus, MJ had been under tons of physical stress he wasn't accustomed to and was doing this comeback for financial reasons. I remember wondering why any production company would fork over money to Michael Jackson for performing because at the very least, his mental health was super precarious. But this way, the new doctor they hired can be sued. Because even if the doctor doesn't have the money, since he's licensed, the medical malpractice insurers will be the ones to pay up.

Mothertheresa, it is refreshing to hear your point of view. a lot of the comments here are so judgemental. Given Michael's long history drug and medical problems, I think all of the evidence should be in before the doctor of two weeks have been tried and taken off to the gallows. Goodness.

Maybe the doctor had done CPR on Michael, then for some reason, moved him to the bed. Maybe the doctor did give the antedote medicine for the demerol medicine but it did not bring him back. Maybe the doctor was giving him reduced dosages of demerol.
Maybe other drugs were being taken by Michael that the doctor did not know about as he could not watch Michael every second of the day.

Regarding money: Money is the reason the concert promoters wanted Michael on tour; money is the reason Michael was going on tour for himself; money is the reason the doctor took the job. If you go to the hospital, will they treat you without insurance (money)? You can hardly blame him based on the articles we read here. Perhaps
he thought he could bring Michael's health around altogether. Two weeks may not be enough time to make a huge impact.

Before rushing to judgement, wait for the toxicology report. Then if he is guity, there will be plenty of time to be judgemental.

Of course, we don't know the details, but, come on. It's obvious, even to outsiders, that MJ had prescription drug addictions in the past. Why would you prescribe these medications without an obvious reason? If I suspect someone is getting pain or anxiety medication from other physicians I would never prescribe more. Chopra was able to find out with a few questions. I don't want to say that I am sure, but this wreaks of malpractice.

Someone was administering CPR to MJ as he lay on a bed without breathing. If it was the cardiologist, I'd say he was a pretty shoddy doctor. If he was in the room at all, I'd say he was not functioning as a responsible and informed physician. What trained person would do CPR on a bed? The 911 operater immediately told the caller to move MJ to the floor. No matter what, this is a sad story of missteps of so many kinds. I hope MJ has found peace.

I totally agree. When I heard the 911 call on CNN, my first thought was "why is he on a bed?" I'm a cardiac nurse with 25 years experience. Anyone who knows CPR knows a firm surface is needed for CPR to be EFFECTIVE. Otherwise, what's the point of doing it? Unless your nervous and trying to hide something. Maybe that explains why he left his car there and took off.
Though MJ was his own person, there are too many of these so called MDs in Hollywood. Writing prescriptions particularly for narcotics, without giving a damn about your patient is malpractice. They all need to be booted out of the profession and lose their licenses....permanently.

I am a michael fun. But as many people have said michael did what he wanted to do. If you refused or questioned him he disowned you. DR. Chopra said the same thing when mike asked him for meds and chopra asked him for what and micheal never called him back or when he called chopra he would apologize and move on. Michael was in control of his life. Look at what he did to his face. Look at how many people told him what are you doing but just kept on doing it. After the trial Mike isolated himself from his family and close friends and surrounded himself with yes men. With money and fame
you get anything...Look at elvis same scenrio died of drugs ..how did he get them...yes DRs. If you refused he went to someon else who would do it. In this case he went to Dr. Murray who was in debt and needed the money thus became a yes DR. Its just a vicious cycle.

Generally the person gets a painful condition, one which typically is long lasting or recurrent, and then undergoes adaptation to the doses of legitimate meds.

As higher doses become required, addiction develops.

If he is cleared and all of the facts come out, I think he could go on a PR campaign to salvage something, maybe even a talk show. Who knows? But, I have to agree that all of his mistakes from here on would be highly scrutinized and publicized.

Many doctors do make mistakes and people die from their mistakes or are botched up from them. That is why they carry malpractice insurance.
