CLAYTON, Ga. — Naked time got a little too public for a former Georgia mayor.

Authorities arrested Mark Musselwhite and charged him with public indecency last weekend after state Department of Natural Resources officers found him sitting nude at his Rabun County campsite.

Officers had received a complaint about a naked man walking along a nearby road earlier in the day, but the 43-year-old Musselwhite said he was not the same man. Musselwhite told the DNR officer he had been swimming in a nearby creek.

The Republican was elected to the Gainesville City Council in 2000, where he served for six years, including a stint as mayor. He lost a bid for a state Senate seat in 2006.

Musselwhite could not be reached for comment by The Associated Press on Saturday.

While maybe he shouldn't be walking along a roadside naked, I do think that our country's hysteria over public nudity is absurd. Moreover, this could be considered a sex crime for which he'd have to register on a list which could ruin the rest of his life--welcome of the home of the "free and the brave."

I agreed with him. He is not the same man.

Don't they have mosquitoes and other biting insects in GA? How about poison ivy and the like? I'd wear as much clothing as possible when camping anywhere.

Really, we should be blaming the Huffington Post; this poor guy was just out there trying the vodka-on-poison ivy trick that you told us about.

Wow..if this is the worst thing this guy does...he should be elected to higher office....

I see a lot of partisan hacks out tonight...since I am independent, I would like to remind them that the wife of a Democrat, himself under investigation, has confessed to bribery....and that the democratic ex governor of Illinois is going to be indicted....and the es governor of NY caught in adultery ruined his chances of higher office, or the mayor of Los Angeles, caught twice with two separate women while the wife lives in the city mansion.....hey....I would say our politicians are not partisan when they think with their tools...so drop the partisan crap...

I hear what you are saying, however, it is really about the hypocrisy of the R's. If they just didn't preach so much about how to "behave".
"Do as I say, not as I do".

Don't disagree, but with the exception of Frank and a rare few other politicians, these guys from both parties presented themselves as faithful husbands and responsible citizens. If the NY governor declared he was in an open marriage and went to Nevada where prostitution is legal, that would have been different.

Take any man, total up his public moral assertions, then divide them by his deeds, and you'll find out just how hypocritical he either is or is not! At least the democrats don't stand on a high and mighty platform claiming to be the moral majority like Newt and the rest of the hypocrites in the GOP. An even better example is Senator Ensign of Texas! I believe these matters should remain a family problem category. Unless, of course, you are one who uses the bully pulpit of congress or any other high office to claim to be totally opposite of what you really are in the morality column. In fact, it's just another lie in the many coming from the right, and further proof that they place party first in all matters. Even their children come in second, right along with country!

The mayor of Tybee Island, Georgia was busted a few years back for letting his little soldier peak out of his shorts when he was maneuvering his butt out of a car seat in view of a couple of easily shocked ladies. When you live in a place where the summer temps are typically above 95, and the humidity a bit higher, it should be illegal to where hardly anything.

Apparently, this guy was just skinny-dipping. Who cares? There's not even a hypocrisy angle, as far as I can see. I used to skinny-dip all the time, until I got married and my wife made me stop. Good lord, lighten up. Politicians have been caught doing stuff a lot more embarrassing than this lately. Give the guy a break. By the way, I didn't even notice what political party he belongs to. I don't care. This is nothing.

Well, littlejohn, if he's walking buck-nekkid up and down the road, that's WAY past "..skinny-dipping..", and a lot closer to deliberate indecency. Musselwhite HAD to know other campers, possibly including young people and/or children, there at the park would see him 'au naturel' - maybe that idea was getting his jollies for him?..? ;) ...

He wasn't running, but this story reminds me of "The Streak" by Ray Stevens (also from GA) from about 30 years ago:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eIPv9AtZ2zE

From the police report:
"He said he didn't think it was a problem, that nobody could see him. I told him again that people had seen him, and asked him if he would do that at Walmart. He said no he wouldn't."
