Mark Musselwhite: Former Georgia Mayor Arrested For Nudity

CLAYTON, Ga. — Naked time got a little too public for a former Georgia mayor.

Authorities arrested Mark Musselwhite and charged him with public indecency last weekend after state Department of Natural Resources officers found him sitting nude at his Rabun County campsite.

Officers had received a complaint about a naked man walking along a nearby road earlier in the day, but the 43-year-old Musselwhite said he was not the same man. Musselwhite told the DNR officer he had been swimming in a nearby creek.

The Republican was elected to the Gainesville City Council in 2000, where he served for six years, including a stint as mayor. He lost a bid for a state Senate seat in 2006.

Musselwhite could not be reached for comment by The Associated Press on Saturday.

America will probably always be a safe haven for prudes, which is an abysmal shame. Our country could learn a lot from the relaxed attitudes of other cultures where nudity is not so "taboo". Despite the provocative nature of Western women's fashion, we're only a few steps to the left of the societies that require their women dress head-to-toe in burquas. In the USA, Nude = Lewd which is categorically ridiculous. A normal-looking guy running around in Bermuda shorts with a perverted agenda is far more trouble to unsuspecting youngsters than any nudist. Society must stop treating the Unclothed Human Body the equivalent of the Atom Bomb. The Hysteria Must Stop. Nudists should be allowed to enjoy beautiful parks where they can live their pants-free lifestyles along with their families (including their own children) where there is NO SHAME about the human body (warts and all). Here's the REAL problem with America: everyone needs to MIND THEIR OWN BUSINESS and parents need to actually TEND their children in public instead of pretending their purity is everyone ELSE's responsibility, and that every adult male outside of their family circle is a potential predator (stats show that most child abuse comes from WITHIN the family circle or very CLOSE to it, whether it's a blood relative, guardian, or merely a role model). As usual, America's prudishness makes the show of skin the Big Crime and it's a SHAM.

I hate to be the one to defend a Republican, but I don't understand the U.S. problem with nudity. What is obscene about simple nudity? The U.S. as a nation needs to outgrow this adolescent prurience which leads to all sorts of unhealthy and unsavory behaviors.
Once again, the Europeans seem to be developmentally years ahead of us. Walk through a city park in many European counties on a warm afternoon and every grassy area will be covered with nude sunbathers enjoying the weather.

i just came back from europe, at least in Paris I did not see this type of behavior anywhere. Yes the parks were filled will people enjoying their city, but nude. I missed that, and glad that I did.

Would we want our children to experience such scenes. I don't think so.

People in most western countries laugh at our prudishness about naked people. It's just skin, folks, we've all got pretty much the same parts.

"Progressives" who get huffy about casual nudity should read a little christian history. That negative attitude about human bodies was originally developed and taught by some pretty disgusting theologians, the same theologians who also taught that the earth was flat, that witches existed and should be killed, that women were inferior humans who should be controlled at all times by men, that the ringing of baptized church bells would drive away lightning, and that the Jews killed Jesus and should be tormented.

You know, it is always a good idea to see what laws exist on nudity in the area you which to take it all off. That is not prudish, but common sense.
if you disagree with a law, you can work to change it. Ones overwhelming need to be nude has not weight in court if you are breaking the law.
Most lifestyle nudists are cognizant of this, and would concur.
He sounds like because he is a white man with connections to power the law, or even, yes ,morality does not apply to him. Morality has been used as a code word bludgeon a whole group of people: Gay and Lesbian families. Republicans in particular have used this to restrict and deny rights.

Good lesson here: when police come around it is better to shut up and do what you are told. At least he was not tazed!
Now, some people do feel more comfortable nude, and I respect that. Most lifestyle nudist will tell you that you should be cognizant of private and public campgrounds and the like, and one should understand existing laws on nudity in the area you which to engage in this; that not only makes sense so as to not offend others, but not place law enforcement with the duty to arrest you.
Now, the bigger picture here is a pattern of white men with connections to power who feel the law does not apply to them.
i would hope that many people so described would take a sober look at their actions and the belief that morality is only used a bludgeon to oppress minority groups such as gay and Lesbian couples and does not really apply to them since they are so entitled.
