WASHINGTON — Republicans concerned about the Obama administration's big spending on economic stimulus, energy and health care are asking, "Where are the jobs?"

"The president and Democrats in Congress claim this spending binge is necessary to put Americans back to work," House Republican leader John Boehner said Saturday in the Republican radio and Internet address. "They promised unemployment would not rise above 8 percent if their trillion-dollar stimulus was passed.

The administration was wrong, Boehner said. "Unemployment has soared above 9 percent. And now the president admits that unemployment will soon reach double digits.

"After all of this spending, after all of this borrowing from China, the Middle East, our children and our grandchildren, where are the jobs?" he said.

Since President Barack Obama's stimulus plan to trigger job creation was passed, the economy has shed 1.6 million jobs. The administration has focused instead on its estimate that the stimulus has created or saved 150,000 jobs.

That estimate comes from a formula that uses government spending and tax cuts to predict job growth. The formula has been used by Republicans and Democrats alike, but was built to predict, not count jobs. To count jobs, economists traditionally rely on Labor Department data on unemployment, manufacturing and construction activity, and county-by-county, state-by-state job reports.

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said early this week that the president expects the nation will reach 10 percent unemployment within the next few months. In January, Obama's economic team predicted unemployment would rise no higher than 8 percent with the help of a $787 billion stimulus program. The unemployment rate in May reached a 25-year high of 9.4 percent. Obama aides have said that the economy took a turn for the worse since their initial forecast.

Boehner has seized on the administration's revised forecast.

He predicted Democratic proposals on health care, stimulus and energy would all be bad for the economy.

He said Republicans have proposed improvements to health care and economic stimulus that are less intrusive and expensive than Obama's plans. And he criticized Democratic efforts to pass an energy bill that he described as "a national energy tax," which passed the House Friday. He singled out proposed health care changes as a job killer.

"It's about to get worse for middle-class families and small businesses," he said. "Democrats are pushing a government takeover of our health care system that will cost at least a trillion dollars."

"The president has repeatedly claimed that Americans will be able to keep their doctors under the Democrats' plan," Boehner said, adding he's seen government reports that indicate millions will lose their current health coverage and millions more will lose their jobs if the Democratic plan is adopted.

Obama argues that health care changes will help the economy and scoffs at predictions that his plans to offer a public plan as an alternative will harm the private insurance industry. He says it's not logical that private industry provides the best quality health care but can't compete with a public plan.

Boehner said Democrats should abandon their determination to pass measures without GOP cooperation. "We hope our Democrat colleagues will abandon their failed go-it-alone approach and work with us to make these reforms a reality," he said.

Doesn't John have a scandal coming out soon? Maybe a 22 year old toyboy locked away in a Georgetown apartment... just speculating... or maybe something as amusing as the proper pronunciation of his last name. Or would that be too drull?

Remember when the Republicans were saying Bush's magical aura was protecting us from Teh Terrrrrerrrrrists, and how much worse things would be if he weren't there?

They should just sit in the corner with their dunce caps, and let the adults run things.

These are Senators from the same Senate Rebublicans who last summer were imploring all of us to be patient until President Bush's tax cuts for the wealthy took effect and money would come pouring down on the middle class, like manna from heaven. Short Memorys.

And it was so successful that they had to send out the first stimulus checks to all of us! I think they keep forgetting that Bush had to do that to try to get the economy going way back when! And how did he do it? HE SPENT MONEY BY SENDING IT BACK TO THE PEOPLE! Funny!

Yeah, that worked out great! Giving hundreds of thousands back to the top 2%, and everyone else gets maybe two hundred dollars. "Fiscal Conservatives".

He' a mo ron because he knows that the police and fireman in his state were granted a reprieve from layoffs as well as teachers. I know two teachers here in Colorado whose jobs were saved by the stimulus package -- and not tax cuts for the wealthy!

Actually, a bunch of the jobs are in his home state (which he seems to have forgotten). There are highway projects ready to go now. Is he perhaps a wee bit dense?

I think Boehner just wants to know where the jobs are because he knows he'll have to look for one soon.

All that Boehner and the Congressional Republicans are capable of doing at this point is to emulate a petulant Chimpanzee at the Zoo by hurling their excrement at onlookers. The Republicans are bankrupt of ideas, morality, hindsight, foresight and the tools necessary to address the mountain of problems they created over the last 30 years they wielded power in Washington DC. (You may now remove your Zoo Key)

Cmon people, where are the jobs?
I mean, we the GOP has done everything and can do refuse stimulus money from Palin, Jindal, Sanford and Perry. The stimulus just isn't working.

Boehner and the rest of the Republicans know full well that the Stimulus Money is just now being distributed to the States. They also know full well that the jobs saved thus far are only the jobs of Fire Fighters, Police, teachers, and other Gov. officials. The infrastructure money and projects are just starting. Therefore, the number of jobs for all of the projects is just getting under way and we will not get a job-count until this fall. All the Republicans seem to be able to do is cause fear and critisize when they know it will cause the most damage. I wish our Media would start doing their jobs and get the word out to the People....alas not!!

Money is going out slowly, so stimulus will have slower yet longer effect.. Of course Reps don't understand this , jugging from their spending for last 8 years...

I understand the concept of rationing. I really appreciate a tempered response - not being rash in deciding how money should be spent. But the stimulus bill was never sold as such. It was advertised as critical emergency funding designed to save and create jobs; projects were to be shovel-ready. It was so urgent to pass, that nobody read the bill (not a tempered response). Now it is not living up to its expectations. While Boehner is doing the political grandstanding dance, the question is still valid.

The jobs are over seas, the way the parties want them. Where were you years ago when people demanded them. BOTH parties are to blame. One is in bed with BIG buisness and the other is too chicken s--t to do anything about it. Sorry AMERICA we did vote for this and against our own best interest for the last 30 years. WE did in order for the rich to get more rich at the expense of the working class.

Bailouts were started on Bush's watch last year and they had support of the Dems. Both parties are equally guilty of spending tax payer dollars to help the banks and large corporations while continuing the trade policies that send our jobs overseas.

One day we will realize that these politicians work like magicians by drawing our attention away from what is really going on. It's past the time we stop attacking each other and try to address the real problems - that this country is an oligarchy pretending to be a representative republic that is pretending to be a democracy. We are like abused spouses who refuse to see the truth in front of our faces for a variety of reasons.
