Now for the politics. This man should obviously resign given his lies and erratic behavior. He left his State with no apparent instructions for continuity of government. He probably used the stimulus money he so vehemently opposed to pay for his Argentina trip. Oh yeah, I forgot. It is Obama's fault for having brought Sanford to the brink of exhaustion, as per Rush Limbaugh. (I can't wait for Michael Steele's reaction)
But it is not in the tradition of Republicans to resign despite being involved in these scandals. Only the Democrats have enough class to do so.
I am glad to see SC Democrats pushing for an inquest into Sanford's behavior and potential misappropriation of State funds.
People of South Carolina to Governor Sanford:
" Governor, these boots are made for WALKIN'
and that's just what they'll do.
One of these days these boot are gonna
walk all over you" ...
(with apologies to Nancy Sinatra - loved that song)

All politics aside, this may not be the most popular comment, and I am the last person to encourage breaking one's marriage vows and being unfaithful. And I am no fan of the Republican party, who constantly moralize America, but forget that their own are human beings and make so-called 'liberal' mistakes, like cheat on their wives. And wasn't Mark Sanford a strong proponent of impeachment for Bill Clinton?
But it is obvious that Mr. Sanford's feelings for this South American woman are quite strong. Otherwise, he would not have gone back to see her after his wife told him to break the affair off. And it is difficult to judge what was going on within the Sanford residence. But having seen people around me who are in the same predicament as he is, I can only suggest that he be honest with himself and follow what his heart says, whether it is in Columbia SC, or Buenos Aires. Everybody deserves to be happy.
Ever seen that classic biology visual showing a mans " brains"???
Gov. Sanford was lucky to be able to afford an exotic pet - most other men who think with their lower "brain" have to settle for the local-grown stuff.
And that "nooner" in Buenos Aires musta cost a fortune - bet the Gov neither a) flew coach nor b) got his ticket on Travelocity 30 days in advance.
Boy, what a life (and what a cost!)...

For his "nooner", he used his frequent flier miles on Delta and stayed with his girlfriend in her apartment.
Not our money; not our business.
Good sentiment.
Democrat or republican, it is sad when media starts digging into personal matters so much, and the guy and his family, and mistress - all they are out for everybody to see and to make jokes.
Too much attention to personal life.
BBBBBBUUUUUTTTTTTTT
He is a bible thumper.
Therein lies the problem silly
Luke 16:18
Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery, and the man who marries a divorced woman commits adultery. (So Says Jesus)
Lev 20:10
And the man that committeth adultery with [another] man's wife, [even he] that committeth adultery with his neighbor's wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.
"He is a bible thumper."
Yes. But he is also human.
If anything good is to come from this tragedy, as a South Carolinian I hope that Sanford has learned that ideology is fine, but it must be mixed with humanity.
Why won't this man just resign? This really is getting ridiculous. The longer he stays the more angry people will become. Why is he subjecting this family to this? Just shameful.
Hurrah for the Democratic leadership for taking a public position on accountability.
An investigation is fully warranted by the Governor's abuse of his office. He is responsible to all of the voters of SC for his actions. The voters deserve a full accounting.
Now do not hurt the people of SC. There are some nice folk there. Especially on the cruise thingy. Enjoy goin on that but, this I know has rocked the boat-big time.
The guy went AWOL and left no one to mind the store.
Only Dems are calling for an investigation?
This doesn't bother the GOP in SC?
stay on this adulterers back--he is a liar and is covering up alot more--he didn't want Obama's stimulus package but he sure wanted the Argentine lady's package!!!!
Investigation? The guy needs to be impeached if he doesn't save SC the trouble and just RESIGN.
Agreed
Yes, but SC is a "K!ll all liberals" Republican machine, and good people find it difficult to stand up to that type of criminal politics. That movement was national back in 2004, but a lot of comes from right there.

Believe it or not! I know of a bunch in Charleston and some of the forward thinking more diverse areas. I forget where the pockets were that turned blue, but i was surprised by how many. One can only hope....that they turn s.c. blue in 2012. This is actually a good start!
Night crawlers!
True Story! I asked a friend why he was no longer with his wife. His reply was..."she caught me hiking the appalachian trail!" I love it, a new euphenism for cheating.
I have one too. I live in a remote area and have neighbors who are off grid.. No TV, internet, etc.. Just phone service. I stopped by visting a couple two days after the Sinford story broke and happened to mention it in conversation. The Mrs. responded "Oh yes I heard all about it! XXXX called me on the phone this morning and told me the whole story."
The she told me a trail joke... I about fell over.
LOL, it was a version of the same thing we have seen in the Sanford threads over and over... "What does a Republican call cheating on his wife? Hiking the Appalachian Trail"
We were using it as a euphemism for cutting work without telling anyone (since none of us has a partner)!
The "affair" aside ... What about the character, integrity, and priorities of this elected official?
He stood there at the news conference & stated how important his four children are, but apparently not enough to have been there for the kids on Fathers Day. He would not have admitted anything if the press hadn't confronted him with the emails. He took a state car to the airport & left it there for the time he was gone. He did not take a security staff with him to a country that has a history of kidnapping. How much would it have cost this country in time & resources if something would have happened to him in a foreign country. He used state funds on at least one admitted trip to see his "friend". Also, he left the country & did not arrange for emergency situations nor did he alert the Lt. Governor (according to reports). He is very vocal about the need for resignation when others were caught in similar circumstances, but thinks he is above it all. Didn't think enough of the people of his state to accept the stimulus package assistance without the legislature insisting on it. Doesn't think enough of his state to step down and allow another, more appropriate representative to govern South Carolina.
"What about the character, integrity, and priorities of this elected official?"
He is a typical Republican... Supports torture, has no integrity, and his priority as an elected official was to block stimulus funding for essential services to his South Carolina constituents.
What about that character with the FRENCH name. Does he have the character, integrity and the right priorities to take over? He calls himself a conservative because he supports capitalism. That's a code word meaning dam the poor.
Due to his reckless driving on the roads of SC he has endangered the lives of potential constituents:
"According to his driving record with the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles, Bauer has had at least two accidents, four tickets and one suspended license for failure to pay a ticket.
On May 6, 2003, Bauer was stopped on Assembly Street in downtown Columbia, South Carolina for running two red lights and speeding up to 60 mph in a 35 mph zone. The officer drew his gun after Bauer got out of the car and began heading toward the officer's car in an "aggressive manner." He was issued a ticket for reckless driving.[8]
On December 26, 2005, Bauer got a warning for speeding (77 mph in a 65 mph zone) in Laurens County, South Carolina.
On February 25, 2006, Bauer was pulled over for speeding over 100 mph in Chester County, South Carolina in a state-issued car, but he was allowed to proceed without a ticket or warning.

Stone Him! (in the spirit of "The Life of Brian")
Jenny, Jenny, Jenny!! Girl get rid of him right away. Honey as good as you are some wonderful person is out there for ya. And look at this: what else has he done undercover-ask National Security that one? Oh ask for intelligence report and who saw what. where, and when-oh somebody knows-they got that camera shot of him at airport so they were on it for real.
