LOS ANGELES — Michael Jackson still had a faint pulse and his body was warm when his doctor found him in bed and not breathing, a lawyer for the doctor told The Associated Press on Sunday.

Edward Chernoff also said Dr. Conrad Murray never prescribed or gave Jackson the drugs Demerol or OxyContin. He denied reports suggesting Murray gave Jackson drugs that contributed to his death.

Chernoff told the AP that Murray was at the pop icon's rented mansion on Thursday afternoon when he discovered Jackson in bed and not breathing. The doctor immediately began administering CPR, Chernoff said.

"He just happened to find him in his bed, and he wasn't breathing," the lawyer said. "Mr. Jackson was still warm and had a pulse."

Jackson's family requested a private autopsy in part because of questions about Murray, the Rev. Jesse Jackson said Saturday. Murray also told the family an autopsy should be performed, Chernoff said.

Three days after the death of the King of Pop, celebrities descended on Los Angeles for a spectacular celebration of Jackson's life at the annual BET awards show.

Joe Jackson, Michael's father, walked on the red carpet wearing a black hat, sunglasses and a dark suit. He planned make an onstage appearance, show publicist Bobbi Marcus said.

"I just wish he could be here to celebrate himself," he said. "Sadly, he's not here, so I'm here to celebrate for him."

Story continues below

In a statement read at the show, Jackson's parents said they solely had the personal and legal "authority for our son and his children." It was their strongest declaration yet about their son's affairs.

People close to Michael Jackson have said since his death that they were concerned about his use of painkillers. Los Angeles County medical examiners completed their autopsy Friday and said Jackson had taken unspecified prescription medication.

Chernoff said any drugs the doctor gave Jackson were prescribed in response to a specific complaint from the entertainer.

"Dr. Murray has never prescribed nor administered Demerol to Michael Jackson," Chernoff said. "Not ever. Not that day. ... Not Oxycontin (either) for that matter."

Paramedics were called to the mansion while the doctor was performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), according to a recording of the emergency call.

Because Jackson was so frail, Murray "administered with his hand behind his back to provide the necessary support," Chernoff said. Some have speculated the doctor botched the CPR.

"He's a trained doctor," Chernoff said. "He knows how to administer CPR."

Medics spent three-quarters of an hour trying to revive Jackson. He was pronounced dead later at University of California Los Angeles Medical Center.

Murray was interviewed by investigators for three hours Saturday. His spokeswoman called Murray "a witness to this tragedy," not a suspect in the death, and police described the doctor as cooperative.

The attorney said Murray will wait to speak publicly until after the police and forensics investigation is complete.

"One of his best friends just died, essentially in his arms _ yeah he's looking forward to telling his story," Chernoff said.

Chernoff also said the promoter of Jackson's 50-show London concerts, AEG Live, owes the cardiologist $300,000.

"His contract with the promoters states he would receive an amount of money each month to be his (Jackson's) personal physician and they have failed to honor that contract," Chernoff said. "They are two months behind."

Randy Phillips, president and CEO of AEG Live, acknowledged the contract called for Murray to be paid $150,000 a month, but said the contract required Jackson's signature.

"Michael never signed the contract," Phillips said.

He also said the doctor's claim for payment may be against Jackson's estate, not AEG which was merely advancing the money to Jackson.

A private pathologist hired by the Jackson family completed a second, private autopsy Saturday, the Los Angeles Times reported, citing unnamed people familiar with the case.

A second autopsy can allow the family to get some information about a death almost immediately, including signs of heart, brain or lung disease or fresh needle punctures, said Dr. Michael Baden, a medical examiner not involved in the Jackson case.

"Usually if it looks normal with the naked eye, it looks normal under the microscope," said Baden, who recently performed a second autopsy on actor David Carradine.

Los Angeles County coroner's officials said their autopsy found no indication of trauma or foul play. But because of additional tests, an official cause of death could take weeks to determine.

There was no word from the Jackson family on funeral plans. Many of Jackson's relatives have gathered at the family's Encino compound, caring there for Jackson's three children.

Al Sharpton, who arrived in Los Angeles on Sunday afternoon, said he was heading to the Jackson compound and would talk with the family about how to memorialize the late pop star. Sharpton said they want to hold memorials in key cities around the globe and also planned a memorial service Tuesday at the Apollo Theater in New York.

It also wasn't clear what would become of Jackson's Neverland Ranch. Investor Thomas Barrack previously set up the joint venture with Michael Jackson after the singer nearly lost the ranch to foreclosure.

Barrack feels close to family members and wants to hear their thoughts on how best to honor Jackson's memory, said Owen Blicksilver, a spokesman for Colony Capital LLC, the Los Angeles-based firm where Barrack is chairman and CEO. The investor joined Jackson's brother Jackie, Jermaine and Tito for lunch Saturday at the sprawling Santa Barbara County property.

A White House adviser said on NBC's "Meet the Press" that President Barack Obama had written to the Jackson family to express his condolences.

Huffpo: We have unethical immoral persons bankrupting this nation and sending our children off to fight an illegal war in the middle east. Those children, who are fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, daughters and sons - our troops. They went to war at Bush's bidding and return to us in caskets and with missing limbs. There are hungry children, wounded people, by the millions. America is nearly bankrupt. There are more pressing issues than an indulged individual who was afforded everything, lived lavishly, and died. Michael Jackson had it all. Million on the planet have very little. Enough. Let's move on to more serious and important issues such as saving the world.

You don't have to read many of these comments to see they are not worth reading - a lot of hate and needless speculation.

I think first tribute should be given to Michael who has given so much. Thank you Michael. Rest in peace.

Two, I think we should ponder our friends and acquaintances who may have slipped through the cracks and who may need help. What can I do? Where's my love? To honor Michael and his memory let's reach out to someone in need, a youth, a friend, a neighbor or a complete stranger. We can do that, yes we can.

This is so needed at this time when so many seem to want to only focus on the negative.

Michael was a beautiful spirit. He was love incarnate, and his entire life was devoted to giving of himself to others. He was complex, he was eccentric, he had debt and he had personal issues, but none of that takes away from his extraordinary contribution to the music world and to humanity.

There will never be another like him.

Let's lay the blame where it truly lies. If MJ was in such poor physical condition why did his doctor not admit him to a hospital? If the doctor didn't prescribe the drugs he was taking, nor inject him with anything, why, when he observed the singer's rapid deterioration, did he not insist on running tests to see what was going on? A simple blood test would have determined what drugs, if any, he was on. At that point, the family could have intervened and put him in rehab. The doctor clearly had other reasons for not insisting Michael enter the hospital. Like, he was in debt and making too much money off the singer to rock gravy train. And was maybe giving him stuff he didn't want the authorities to find out about?

A cardiologist who has a patient Micheal's age die of a heart attack after being his personal physician for at least a year is either incompetent or deliberately not doing his job.

Promoters would have wanted a HEALTHY and STRONG MJ if that was the case. It would have been in their best interest to keep him alive and healthy than to let him deteriorate.

Why does a 50 YO with no prior heart disease have a cardiologist on call? Unless of course he was the one most likely to deal out opiate meds and injections when asked.

He has a mansion and offices in Vegas as well, but never actually "practiced" there. Doesn't take much to imagine what the doc's addiction is, does it?

I've seen other reports that the 12 year old saw him collapse onto the living room floor and thought he was joking, and stood in a trance as the doctor was trying to revive him. So why is one version saying he was on the living room floor, and another that he was lying in his bed?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:28 PM on 06/28/2009

It is likely, that if Michael fell to the floor he was immediately carried to his bed--especially if it were nearby. Under the circumstances, if his bed was upstairs, that would seem a bit far to take him in that big house.

I'm sorry, but I have to say something here. Not everything is about race. Just as you are free to express your opinions and regard for Michael Jackson and the President (and I share your feelings about both), the truth is, there are people who don't share those sentiments. It doesn't make them racist. They are allowed to have their opinions, just like we are. They may say hurtful things - it doesn't make them racist. That's the way the world is. I don't expect everyone to love Michael Jackson, the President or anyone else that I admire. You shouldn't either. Stop injecting race into every conversation.

If it turns out he really had a disease that ate away the cartilage in his body (the nose is made of cartilage just like all the joints) will you still poke fun at the man's last years? And if the children turn out to be his, even by artificial insemination, will you take back your scorn and apologize to them? I doubt it.

I think Joe Jackson is the reason Michael and a few of the other kids ( if not all of them ) were so dekcuf up in the first place. But doesn't Michael's death give Joe the opportunity to get a little more control over any future money that will be made off Michael's name ? Yeah I know Mike was in debt, but does he still owe the debt if he dies and his other assets were somehow protected legally ?

Any surgeons who continued to work on Michael should have their names published and the practices shut down. A doctor has a responsibility to say enough is enough, no matter what you are being treated for. Plastic surgeons usually work in conjunction with psychiatrists for this very reason, to work with the mental aspect as to why a person needs so many surgeries. Whoever did the constant work on Michael is a hack, plain and simple. Would you want Michaels face to be a testimony of your work? If so, you are not a very good doctor, and you really don't care about your patients, just their checks.

Who was really controling Micheal recently?
Louis Farrakan and the Nation of Islam.
All those men wearing nice, expensive taylored suits in every picture of Michael were eating away at Michael's fortune, 24/7.
These are the enablers that allowed the circumstances to be what they are.
They were not looking out on Michael's behalf but instead were taking complete advantage of him financially. Through Michael's drug dependency, they ran the show. This is similar to what eventually happened to Howard Hughes, by his own associates.
The people around him, kept him druged, and did what they wanted with his Empire.
For all the African American celebrities that eventually get into problems these people, the Nation of Islam shows up to vulturize the situation for profit.

While technically correct, the headline on this story is misleading. Readers are led to believe that the doctor's description of MJ's final moments are going to be in the story.

When in fact HuffPo simply said that the doctor talked to the police about MJ's final moments.

HuffPo has been guilty of this before, making headlines sensational motivating people to click through to the story, this so HuffPo can make more money. (HuffPo sets ad rates and advertisers are motivated to pay higher rates when there's high click rates on ads, stories and even the site main page.)

But that practice will doom HuffPo as word gets out that HuffPo sensationalizes headlines to generate ad revenues. Some day people will stop showing up to HuffPo because it will not be considered a serious news source.

Just sayin.

Too much. It's all too much. Jackson was nothing more than a punchine for twenty years. He was brilliant in his heyday, then fizzled into a has been. He was extravagant beyond measure, and frittered away his wealth. He abused children - that supersedes all else. He became the very thing that had so ruined his own life - a child abuser. We've heard enough about him. Too much.

Mr. Michael Joe Jackson, please, rest in heavenly peace. GOD, not these mere mortals like us will be your ultimate judge; something all seem to forget. Thank you for the music, the memories, and your absolute GOD GIVEN TALENT of GENIUS. GODSPEED, Michael. They can't hurt you anymore, nor can they remove you from our hearts; that is being proven right now. We will never let your legacy die, period. There is evidence that this Doctor was possibly unhappy where he was or wanted a career change.
So he closed his practice and agreed to become MJ's 24/7 personal doctor.

He sent out letters to his patients announcing that he was going to take advantage of a once in a lifetime opportunity and that he was closing his practice.

Why did MJ have a live-in doctor? He may have done that to calm the insurance companies who were insuring his concerts. On assurances he would have 24/7 medical help MJ was able to get the required insurance that concert promoters insist artists have, especially on the big shows.

By the way, I hear the insurance company insuring the concerts is going to take a big hit, to the tune of $300 million. Ouch.

When MJ passed out the doc knew he was dead. He paniced and performed about two hours of CPR when he knew that if you can't revive someone in 5 minutes it's over. He was not expecting CPR to work, he was simply hoping for a miracle.

As to why he appeared to have fled, he didn't. He went to the hospital with MJ's body. After the doctors pronounced MJ dead the doc had two choices, go back to pick up his car or go somewhere else to collect his thoughts. When he went to collect his thoughts someone wisely told him to get a lawyer since you never know what might happen.
