LOS ANGELES — Michael Jackson still had a faint pulse and his body was warm when his doctor found him in bed and not breathing, a lawyer for the doctor told The Associated Press on Sunday.

Edward Chernoff also said Dr. Conrad Murray never prescribed or gave Jackson the drugs Demerol or OxyContin. He denied reports suggesting Murray gave Jackson drugs that contributed to his death.

Chernoff told the AP that Murray was at the pop icon's rented mansion on Thursday afternoon when he discovered Jackson in bed and not breathing. The doctor immediately began administering CPR, Chernoff said.

"He just happened to find him in his bed, and he wasn't breathing," the lawyer said. "Mr. Jackson was still warm and had a pulse."

Jackson's family requested a private autopsy in part because of questions about Murray, the Rev. Jesse Jackson said Saturday. Murray also told the family an autopsy should be performed, Chernoff said.

Three days after the death of the King of Pop, celebrities descended on Los Angeles for a spectacular celebration of Jackson's life at the annual BET awards show.

Joe Jackson, Michael's father, walked on the red carpet wearing a black hat, sunglasses and a dark suit. He planned make an onstage appearance, show publicist Bobbi Marcus said.

"I just wish he could be here to celebrate himself," he said. "Sadly, he's not here, so I'm here to celebrate for him."

In a statement read at the show, Jackson's parents said they solely had the personal and legal "authority for our son and his children." It was their strongest declaration yet about their son's affairs.

People close to Michael Jackson have said since his death that they were concerned about his use of painkillers. Los Angeles County medical examiners completed their autopsy Friday and said Jackson had taken unspecified prescription medication.

Chernoff said any drugs the doctor gave Jackson were prescribed in response to a specific complaint from the entertainer.

"Dr. Murray has never prescribed nor administered Demerol to Michael Jackson," Chernoff said. "Not ever. Not that day. ... Not Oxycontin (either) for that matter."

Paramedics were called to the mansion while the doctor was performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), according to a recording of the emergency call.

Because Jackson was so frail, Murray "administered with his hand behind his back to provide the necessary support," Chernoff said. Some have speculated the doctor botched the CPR.

"He's a trained doctor," Chernoff said. "He knows how to administer CPR."

Medics spent three-quarters of an hour trying to revive Jackson. He was pronounced dead later at University of California Los Angeles Medical Center.

Murray was interviewed by investigators for three hours Saturday. His spokeswoman called Murray "a witness to this tragedy," not a suspect in the death, and police described the doctor as cooperative.

The attorney said Murray will wait to speak publicly until after the police and forensics investigation is complete.

"One of his best friends just died, essentially in his arms _ yeah he's looking forward to telling his story," Chernoff said.

Chernoff also said the promoter of Jackson's 50-show London concerts, AEG Live, owes the cardiologist $300,000.

"His contract with the promoters states he would receive an amount of money each month to be his (Jackson's) personal physician and they have failed to honor that contract," Chernoff said. "They are two months behind."

Randy Phillips, president and CEO of AEG Live, acknowledged the contract called for Murray to be paid $150,000 a month, but said the contract required Jackson's signature.

"Michael never signed the contract," Phillips said.

He also said the doctor's claim for payment may be against Jackson's estate, not AEG which was merely advancing the money to Jackson.

A private pathologist hired by the Jackson family completed a second, private autopsy Saturday, the Los Angeles Times reported, citing unnamed people familiar with the case.

A second autopsy can allow the family to get some information about a death almost immediately, including signs of heart, brain or lung disease or fresh needle punctures, said Dr. Michael Baden, a medical examiner not involved in the Jackson case.

"Usually if it looks normal with the naked eye, it looks normal under the microscope," said Baden, who recently performed a second autopsy on actor David Carradine.

Los Angeles County coroner's officials said their autopsy found no indication of trauma or foul play. But because of additional tests, an official cause of death could take weeks to determine.

There was no word from the Jackson family on funeral plans. Many of Jackson's relatives have gathered at the family's Encino compound, caring there for Jackson's three children.

Al Sharpton, who arrived in Los Angeles on Sunday afternoon, said he was heading to the Jackson compound and would talk with the family about how to memorialize the late pop star. Sharpton said they want to hold memorials in key cities around the globe and also planned a memorial service Tuesday at the Apollo Theater in New York.

It also wasn't clear what would become of Jackson's Neverland Ranch. Investor Thomas Barrack previously set up the joint venture with Michael Jackson after the singer nearly lost the ranch to foreclosure.

Barrack feels close to family members and wants to hear their thoughts on how best to honor Jackson's memory, said Owen Blicksilver, a spokesman for Colony Capital LLC, the Los Angeles-based firm where Barrack is chairman and CEO. The investor joined Jackson's brother Jackie, Jermaine and Tito for lunch Saturday at the sprawling Santa Barbara County property.

A White House adviser said on NBC's "Meet the Press" that President Barack Obama had written to the Jackson family to express his condolences.

Enough already. The world has not ended....nor stopped for even a microsecond..... He was an exceptional artist who became mentally unstable..... And it is too bad he died. Maybe his kids can walk around without bags on their heads!

Michael Jackson has looked like he is on his last leg for a long time but how do you save someone from themself? I understand this doctor calls himself a cardiologist even though he is not trained in the field. Apparently he is not breaking the law or trying to fool anyone. Was this doctor particularly competent or did Michael choose him for other reasons? I know a young person who had a massive heart attack in the hospital no less so I withhold judgement. All I can say is the situation is very sad. Doesn't say much for parents who see a talent in their children and then steal their childhood away from them before they have a chance to find their own path.

LOS ANGELES, CA – Plans for Michael Jackson’s funeral have been revealed by his estate.

Representatives of the Jackson estate have released a statement detailing some of the plans for Mr. Jackson’s funeral. In his will Jackson wishes for his body to be cremated and sprinkled over the surface of the moon. However since then his finances have taken a downturn and new plans have had to be created.
The funeral will be closed casket, with a large picture of Michael from 1982. Seated front row will be Jackson’s ex-wife Lisa Marie Presley, the skeleton of the Elephant Man, Bubbles 4 (the most recent pet monkey to carry the name), and Macaulay Culkin. The remaining members of the Four Tops, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross and the Supremes will all perform at the ceremony to pay their respects. Acting as pallbearers will be the Harlem Globetrotters, who made Michael an honorary member in 1978.
Sources within the intelligence community believe that Kim Jong Il may be planning a tribute concert in Pyongyang, wearing a red leather version of his standard jumpsuit.

RIP Michael - just don't come back looking like a Zombie.

Is there a rational explanation for this cardiologist who was attending Jackson at the time of the 911 call, not to know the patient should be placed on a hard surface--not a bed--to administer CPR effectively? Even a paramedic on the phoneline had to tell them to move Michael onto the floor. How long was this incompetent doctor in control of the situation and could that time made a difference in saving the life of Michael Jackson?

Where did this doctor receive his medical degree, from the side of a Cracker Jack box? This issue needs to be investigated for possible professional negligence and incompetence.

While I've realized that Joe Jackson cannot be blamed for Michael's problems, he was certainly a contributing factor. It's noble he wanted to take the family out of poverty, but I wonder if I could do that at the expense of my child's life. He saw greatness in Michael at an early age but failed to notice the warning signs of things like Body Dismorphic Disorder, gender confusion, emotional issues that stunted his growth into a normal human being. It should have been clear to him years ago that Michael was not mature enough to handle the adulation and the demands. In my opinion, that is where his contribution lies. In those days many of us went through the beatings and the abuse heaped in the guise of good parenting. But he totally ignored Michael's cries for help. It's sad that even if he sees it, it will be too late. At least Michael is now at peace. God knows he deserves it.

Yours is a very astute post and nails on the head all the issues MJ and JJ had. But one cannot forget that few families function like we do, with the benefit of hindsight.

Fact is that most families lack sophistication to engage in self-analysis and "do the right or perfect thing" for others. We all function within our own and other's limitations. Those limitations include all the failings, flaws, emotions, and vices (to name a few) that we carry throughout our lives.

JJ and family were like any other low income family. Joe Jackson lacked the ability, sophistication, education and most likely motivation to develop and guide MJ throughout his early years and beyond, especially when MJ rocketed to fame. Simply put, JJ was out of his league. He was a poor man who saw something in his family, that could be developed and turned into a money maker that would assure all a comfortable life.

Nothing wrong with that at all, just explaining why I don't think anyone should be too hard on Joe Jackson.

Joe Jackson was a victim himself of a White racist society. He was hard on his kids because like most Black people we are trying to keep them out of trouble. He knew if he didn't get them the streets would have and we must remember during those days Blacks were not treated like White people were. But then again we still are not treated like White people. We must remember that there were many contributing factors, the most prominant being the racism that had engulfed this nation for hundreds of years.

I see Joe Jackson as pretty much pure evil, and very much the cause of MJ's personality issues. In interviews, MJ has discussed being beaten by his father, being told that he would be shot on stage if he did not dance fast enough and being repeatedly told that he was ugly with a big nose. Let's also not forget that as a child MJ witnessed his brothers having sex with groupies and that MJ was very likey sexually approached. Joe's beatings also drove MJ to the success that he had but it came at the cost of MJ having any chance of having a healthy personality. Had MJ grown up in today's standards, he would have been protected from such a monster.

"""Michael was the biggest superstar in the world and in history," Joe Jackson told Fox News Channel's "Geraldo at Large.""

What a sickening man Joe Jackson is. That quote is Joe's ego talking. It has nothing to do with the son he used to beat, and who was a talented, tragic man. Unfortunately MJ's talent was packaged and channeled as a tool for corporate profit and Joe Jackson had a lot to do with that.

writer10027 you are speaking my mind. Whenever I see Joe Jackson, the old man with ear rings and fat goldchains and the rumors about how he ruled with an iron fist then I have my reservations, but apparently Michael has forgiven him, so we should not judge.
I am afraid Michael was the cash cow for the family, and the saddest thing will be the coming months and all the reports about how the fight will be about money money money. After all, even slime bag Jesse Jackson is involved. This will eventually probably turn a lot of people off.

I am so sad to know he passed, for his music gave me so many happy moments on a dancefloor. I think sometimes how sad that the young kids only know the "weird" stuff, and not realize his great talent, the music videos always made to tell a story, great dancers, directors, visuals, he was just great.

I have severe doubts that the original's DNA is anywhere in the same zip/area/country code as those kids.

If Prince Michael amounts to anything, it will be fully controlled and manufactured. And surely sad.

Most pop stars are manufactured. Look at the endless stream of mediocre talent that Disney and Sony spits out every year. The idea is to market them heavily make a quick killing then retire them before the kids get bored with them or something like a playback failure exposes their lack of talent.

As for Price Michael...who cares most pop music is garbage anyway.

"I just wish he could be here to celebrate himself," he said. "Sadly, he's not here, so I'm here to celebrate for him."

yeah, I bet. He is rubbing his hands together thinking about all the residuals pouring in.
The role he played as a father - well, I reckon he is partially responsible for what MJ turned into. Task master, indeed.

Yes - MJ is finally at peace. A peace he never found alive. Sadly.

If only the family had expressed and demonstrated as much concern when he was alive, perhaps he would be around today. However, it was his turn, and at the end of the day, the quality of his life appears to not have been too great.

May he finally find the peace and love in heaven that he was unable to enjoy on earth. RIP Michael.

In these situations it is so easy to question the loyality of family members. "How come the family did not do more..." BUT you can not help someone who does not want to be helped- specially a 50 year old man! The hardest thing for a family to deal with is a loved one who has substance abuse issues- its not easy

Everyone says that Michael Jackson died "broke" but folks fail to realize his broke is different from our kind of broke. LOL Most folks would not have a problem being his kind of broke- we go broke we have to borrow money for the bus or subway- Michael goes broke he borrows a private jet. Most folks go broke and end up living in a roach infested studio apartment over a chinese take out joint- Michael goes broke and he winds up in a $100,000 a month mansion

Comon. Michael Jackson couldn't be an anonymous slob like the rest of us, living in a 5th floor walkup. MJ elicited strong reactions from people- not many were indifferent to him. He needed money to insulate himself from his public.

That's a bad combination especially if he was also taking a pain killer. They can cause respiratory arrest. I do find it interesting that a heart attack or stroke would have shown up on autopsy and didn't.
