SULLIVANS ISLAND, S.C. — South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford gave thought to quitting, retreating from public scrutiny to rebuild his life as the scandal of his extramarital affair with an Argentinian woman came out, he told The Associated Press Sunday.

Close spiritual and political associates urged him to instead fight to restore his constituents' _ and his family's _ trust and finish out the 18 months left in his last term.

"Resigning would be the easiest thing to do," he said he thought.

He's sticking it out and faces endless questions about the affair, whether he used public money to visit his lover and whether his 20-year marriage will continue. Add to it a barrage of criticism from South Carolina politicians who think the two-term Republican should step down.

"Part of walking humbly is you've got to listen to your critics out there," the 49-year-old Sanford said. "And all of us will have critics, and the higher you go, I suppose, the more critics you have."

Sanford spoke exclusively with The Associated Press outside his family's beach house on Sullivans Island. He, his wife, Jenny, and sons were in separate cars, headed to his family's farm _ where his 83-year-old mother lives _ in Beaufort, an hour south.

The governor admitted last week to a yearlong affair with the woman from Argentina whom he says he's known for about eight years. Later Sunday, 41-year-old former television reporter Maria Belen Chapur acknowledged in a statement that she had been having a relationship with the governor.

Sanford looked like a man of leisure in faded khaki shorts, T-shirt and bare feet. But behind the casual attire, he appeared contrite and spoke of falling from grace and rebuilding his life.

"I am sorry," he said. "I apologize for letting everyone down."

The Sanfords say they will try to reconcile. One person they've sought help from is their spiritual counselor, Warren "Cubby" Culbertson, whom Mark Sanford thanked during the news conference in which he admitted his affair.

Reconciling with fellow lawmakers and constituents also lies ahead. Some lawmakers want his resignation because he secretly visited his mistress during a state-funded 2008 trip, and because he was out of touch with his staff during his recent weeklong visit to Argentina to see her. His staff had told the public he was hiking the Appalachian Trail before the real story of his mysterious absence came to light.

Sanford has agreed to reimburse the state for some of the more than $8,000 in taxpayer money spent on the Argentina leg of the economic development trip to South America last year. On Sunday, he repeatedly said he never used public money to see the woman.

Chapur, a divorced mother of two sons, said in a statement to news network C5n of Buenos Aires that said she will not talk about her private life, which has already been the focus of intense media scrutiny in the U.S. and Argentina.

Chapur, a graduate in political science from the Catholic University of Buenos Aires, said someone accessed her Hotmail account without permission late last year and leaked e-mail correspondence that described a relationship with Sanford to the South Carolina newspaper The State.

"I have decided to send this statement to clear up certain incorrect things that are being reported, and put an end to a matter that, as you imagine, is very painful to me, my two children, my entire family and close friends," she said in the statement addressed to anchor Eduardo Feinman, who read it on camera. Feinman was Chapur's editor when she worked briefly as a television reporter in 2001.

When it comes to his critics _ most notably Republican state Sen. Jake Knotts _ and their calls for him to step down, Sanford said he understands where they are coming from.

"I don't begrudge the Jakie Knottses of the world," Sanford said. "He's going to do what he's going to do. I gotta do my part."

The governor's efforts to stay in office appear, in the minds of some lawmakers, to hinge in part on his ability to salvage his marriage. While several critics wants a criminal probe and others want him to step down, reconciling with the first lady does have sway among legislators.

"That's almost become a proxy for how some are looking at this. They're looking at Jenny," said state Sen. Tom Davis, a Beaufort Republican and former Sanford chief of staff. "In large measure, it depends on how things work and how people see things are working out between the governor and first lady."

As far as his marriage, Sanford said he and his wife are working on it.

"If there wasn't healing going on, I wouldn't be here," he said, pointing to his beach house, where he had dinner with his family Saturday night and where he took a run at sunrise on the sand with one of his sons.

Sanford added that he has been overwhelmed by the support he's received.

"It's only in the hard times you get a sense of how blessed you really are," he said.

Regardless of what politicians in the Statehouse think, his Sullivans Island neighbors are supportive.

During Sunday's interview, several folks stopped to say hello as they strolled by on their morning walks. One man, driving a golf cart festooned with red-white-and-blue decorations, paused to invite Sanford and his family to a Fourth of July celebration.

"How are you?" the man asked Sanford.

"Considering the circumstances, all right," Sanford replied with a wan smile.

No, he has a job to do firing up his "HATE BASE" telling others how to live their lives..... now that he can be "forgiven" for his transgressions..... but jaysez says other honorable loving couples should not get married and live the so called virtuous life Mr. Sanford has lived. What a pile of stinking politics.

Should this really be a question of what is the easier/easiest, or harder/hardest thing to do? Isn't it more appropriate to consider what is the right or best thing to do, and shouldn't that consideration be for the people he has been elected to represent? There are many who question his ability and practice as the chief executive of South Carolina before these latest incidents. It is not a stretch to question his fitness to be an effective leader now, based not on his personal transgressions, but on his public transgressions, dishonesty, and possible legal/ethical breeches as related to his job and contract with the citizens of his state. Let him rebuild his reputation, his trust, and his integrity. I hope he can pull it off, but let him do it on his own time and on his own dime. South Carolina needs a full time governor.

It's all about the benefits. If he's allowed to finish his term, he gets to keep his pension and health care. If he ends up resigning or is impeached, then he will lose it. It's all about the money and benefits.

If his wife stays with him, she can continue to support him since she is independently wealthy. If he flees to his mistress, she will have to pick up the responsibility as he comes without power, without influence, without money, without reputation, and without a job. Wonder how attractive he will be then.....

Clinton never tried to sell us a bill of goods; everyone knew about his demon and his flaws before he was elected. And he never judged others and their personal behaviors, either. He never pretended to be anything other than what he was and never held himself up as a moral standard. And after his big expose, he never preached Bible passages and pretended to be King David or anyone else, other than a flawed human being who had heavy responsibilities that he had to continue to carry and fulfill and, in the face of such public condemnation from the likes of Sanford and his Republican cronies, he did so with great courage and humility in his actions, not in his talk, which is cheaper than cheap, if you cannot practise what you preach to others!

Isn't there something in the law that says he should be FIRED?!
why should he have a choice to stay?

Once again, politicians are immune to any punishment...would anyone with a normal job be able to keep it if they didn't show up for work for 5 days and use company money to take a trip?

In the nursing profession, we call what he did, "abandoning the patients", and one could lose their license to practise for that. The reason they are not demanding resignation or they do not impeach him is the reason behind everything Republican Party does anything: Politics. They do not like the Lt. Governor and do not want him as an incumbent for the next election; so they are sticking with an incompetent, non-empowered, disgraced, clown for their governor, as if that would give them more political impetus for the next election....There are no standards, no integrity, no character, in the Republican Party; it is all politics and the greater problem is that even their politics is all wrong. The strategies they employ for political benefit end up making them all look like incompetent, petulant children rather than governmental leaders and it is backfiring on them every time. If ever a Democrat, any Democrat, had a chance in So. Carolina, it should be NOW.

"In large measure, it depends on how things work and how people see things are working out between the governor and first lady."

So, what? If Sanford can patch up his marriage then that will be a good sign that he should be able to keep his job as Governor?!? What a load of cr@p! Whether or not your wife decides to leave you or take you back after your lying-@$$ cheated on her should NOT be a deciding factor in whether he gets to keep his job.

Although I guess I can see where being able to cheat on your wife for months, then sweet-talk her into taking you back might be seen as a good skill to have, especially to Republicans.

ONE BIG QUESTION:

I assume that Gov Sanford was living in the governor's mansion.

If his wife has kicked him out, is she living there with the kids?

However, if they separate, doesn't she have to leave?

If he resigns, will both of them be looking for new quarters.

I understand that they can afford several houses, so it should be a hardship for them

The convenience of summer school vacation enabled her to take the kids to the summer home on Sullivan Island and then kick him out because he kept ASKING HER FOR PERMISSION TO VISIT HIS MISTRESS, which she would not give him, so, while they were "working on their marriage with other couples in the gov mansion with a spiritual leader, he was begging to go see his mistress....Financially, she does not need him, as she is one of the heirs of the family who owns the Skills Craft Tools company on one side and a wealthy family on the other side in law, judge, etc. He, on the other hand, may not have that kind of backing. I assume she and her family think he is going through mid life crisis and they are trying to be patient that he might "grow out of it" and come to his senses. Regardless, the marital end has nothing to do with his job performance, which is also abysmal.

What makes me laugh about the entire situation is how the GOP is handling this. Mitt Romney yesterday on Meet the Press kept saying that this is a time for him to deal with his family and how this must be affecting them, blah, blah, blah.
All I will say is two words: Bill Clinton! Does anyone remember how many millions of taxpayer dollars were spent to try and bring this man down? At least the Dems are more fiscally conscious and we all know that this Sanford jerk is just another example of how a man with power cannot keep his pants zipped.
Enough is enough. why when the GOP gets caught that they are just swept under the rug...it's time to drag this man through the mud!

Sanford and Ensign should both slink back off to whatever degenerate den of iniquity they came from. Not for being dogs, but for being dogs after giving other people a hard time about being dogs.

"Resigning would be the easiest thing to do," he said he thought.

Yeah, it would be the easiest thing for your party, your state and your constituents; they could get on with their lives and forget about you as quickly as possible.

Staying on is the easiest thing for YOU. You don't have to look for a new job, move, or give up the little perks of office you seemed to enjoy so much -

- but of course, you only care about what's best for Mark Sanford...

I can not believe what I'm hearing on MSM. There is no question this guy should resign or be impeached. He not only lied, he was derelict in his duties for 5 days, and he stole public funds to support his personal habit. This is a bunch of BS!
