CHICAGO — A surprising number of teenagers _ nearly 15 percent _ think they're going to die young, leading many to drug use, suicide attempts and other unsafe behavior, new research suggests.

The study, based on a survey of more than 20,000 kids, challenges conventional wisdom that says teens engage in risky behavior because they think they're invulnerable to harm. Instead, a sizable number of teens may take chances "because they feel hopeless and figure that not much is at stake," said study author Dr. Iris Borowsky, a researcher at the University of Minnesota.

That behavior threatens to turn their fatalism into a self-fulfilling prophecy. Over seven years, kids who thought they would die early were seven time more likely than optimistic kids to be subsequently diagnosed with AIDS. They also were more likely to attempt suicide and get in fights resulting in serious injuries.

Borowsky said the magnitude of kids with a negative outlook was eye-opening.

Adolescence is "a time of great opportunity and for such a large minority of youth to feel like they don't have a long life ahead of them was surprising," she said.

The study suggests a new way doctors could detect kids likely to engage in unsafe behavior and potentially help prevent it, said Dr. Jonathan Klein, a University of Rochester adolescent health expert who was not involved in the research.

"Asking about this sense of fatalism is probably a pretty important component of one of the ways we can figure out who those kids at greater risk are," he said.

The study appears in the July issue of Pediatrics, released Monday.

Scientists once widely believed that teenagers take risks because they underestimate bad consequences and figure "it can't happen to me," the study authors say. The new research bolsters evidence refuting that thinking.

Cornell University professor Valerie Reyna said the new study presents "an even stronger case against the invulnerability idea."

"It's extremely important to talk about how perception of risk influences risk-taking behavior," said Reyna, who has done similar research.

Fatalistic kids weren't more likely than others to die during the seven-year study; there were relatively few deaths, 94 out of more than 20,000 teens.

The researchers analyzed data from a nationally representative survey of kids in grades 7 to 12 who were interviewed three times between 1995 and 2002. Of 20,594 teens interviewed in the first round, 14.7 percent said they thought they had a good chance of dying before age 35. Subsequent interviews found these fatalistic kids engaged in more risky behavior than more optimistic kids.

The study suggests some kids overestimate their risks for harm; however, it also provides evidence that some kids may have good reason for being fatalistic.

Native Americans, blacks and low-income teens _ kids who are disproportionately exposed to violence and hardship _ were much more likely than whites to believe they'd die young.

Okay... so because they think they are going to die young... they do things to make sure they do. Interesting.

I was the exact same way. I never thought I would live to see 18 and it has been the same for each decade since then.

I was brought up with the Bay of Pigs etc. and hiding under our desk drills (grew up in FLA).

I believe this is something that has always existed with probably teh same % of teens.

I believed I wouldn't live to grow up as well. Nuclear war was a fear, but having an evangelical upbringing I was also "living in the end times". I remember lying awake in my twin bed praying for the Second Coming not to happen until I got the chance to have sex.

That's so sad to hear what the insanity of religion does to childrens' minds.. don't worry, there won't be any "end times" of a biblical sort, the only way the world will end in the visible future is through our own failings: either environmentally or through armed conflict leading to thermonuclear war. Don't hold your breath on that second coming.. I do hope you've managed to have sex since then though LOL.

I spent the first 10 years of life secure in the knowledge that grown-ups knew it all, and everything was under control.

That comforting illusion is shattered for today's kids in the media-saturated 9/11 Era.

I wonder what the drug companies will think of this...

Fatalistic? Pessimistic? Hopeless? Depressed?!

Give them pills! Psychotic pills. That's how this must be solved. There is no other way. This is a highly certain fact and science has shown. It doesn't matter that "depressed" kids never existed before. This is a new age and these children are lucky that it just so happens that they have become depressed when we have created the appropriate chemical compounds to solve their issue. I know about the twitches... but these kids must be given something. Their drugs must be exchanged. From Pot to Paxil .

37th in health care...13th in quality of life. And witnessing a country more interested in saving the rich that could care less about the process of building things. Why should they be inspired?
I can see why they marinate in the anxiety of their own mortality.

That is a little deep for an American teenager to think about, don't you think?

For an American teenager, yes.

I find it sad that the folks who are here making fun of today's kids are the same age (and generation) as their parents.

Maybe these kids wouldn't feel like they're going to die if we CARED.

Further proof that people are bad with numbers. About 3% of the people who die each year are between 20 and 34 years old. For African Americans, it's about 5%. The number who are between 15 and 19, is around a half percent for both groups. That 15% of young people think that they will be in that grisly group is a large overestimation of the situation.

The problem of innumeracy is not confined to the young. When polls ask people if they are in the top 5% of incomes, typically about 20% of respondents answer yes.

It seems to me that they simply asked a number of teens if they thought they would die young... and a number of them responded in the affirmative. When they did the math... it came out at 15%. For example.... 15 out of 100 teens asked if they thought they would die young responded yes. That would be your 15%. I'm sure the kids didn't try (even if they could) to figure out the exact number of young people who die... and then wonder if they would be in that number as you suggest.

This survey should have also noted the medical history of these kids as well.

How many of them have been dosed with Ritalin, serotonin inhibitors, antidepressants etc.

How many of them are in schools which no longer allow for physical activity at recess?

these kids have been used as guinea pigs by the drug industry

Not to mention the fact that the US is involved in two wars at this time and who knows what Kim is going to do in North Korea? I am not surprised these young folks feel they will die young.

I don't think a lot of these kids feel like they have a chance in hell to achieve what they feel they've been told is normal in life. There's WAY TOO MANY people in the world and in this country. The competition can be overwhelming.
The cost of living and what it takes to get by has become ridiculously blown out of proportion. Especially compared to as recently as the early 80's. What's it going to be like in the next 20 years for these kids? Put yourself in their shoes and have some compassion and empathy. Many of these kids may seem dumb, but are even smarter than we were and they still will have trouble succeeding.
I feel like the most important thing we can all do to help alleviate some of this pressure is to sacrifice our own selfish desires and goals and STOP HAVING SO MANY KIDS!!!!
It diminishes our individual value...
