TAMPA, Fla. — Television pitchman Billy Mays likely died of a heart attack in his sleep, but further tests are needed to be sure of the cause of death, a medical examiner said Monday.

Hillsborough County Medical Examiner Vernard Adams said Mays suffered from hypertensive heart disease, and the wall of the left ventricle of Mays' heart and the wall of one of his arteries were enlarged. The boisterous, bearded 50-year-old known for hawking OxiClean and other products on national commercials was found dead Sunday by his wife in their Tampa condominium.

"The heart disease is perfectly consistent with sudden death," Adams said.

An official cause of death will be issued after toxicology and other tests are completed in eight to 10 weeks.

LISTEN TO 911 CALL:

"While it provides some closure to learn that heart disease took Billy from us, it certainly doesn't ease the enormous void that his death has created in our lives," his wife, Deborah, said in a statement. "As you can imagine, we are all devastated."

Adams said Mays was taking the prescription painkillers Tramadol and hydrocodone for hip pain, but there was no indication of drug abuse. Mays had planned to have hip-replacement surgery Monday.

Mays told his wife he didn't feel well when he went to bed sometime after 10 p.m. Saturday. Earlier in the day, he said he was hit on the head when his flight from Philadelphia had a rough landing at Tampa International Airport. The airline said no passengers reported serious injuries.

Adams said the autopsy showed no evidence of head trauma.

In a 911 tape released Monday, a frantic woman tells emergency operators she found Mays cold and unresponsive. The woman isn't identified, but police have said Deborah Mays found her husband dead.

When asked what had happened, the caller says she doesn't know.

A second person got on the phone as the operator encourages them to get Mays on the floor to start CPR.

"We can't get him up, ma'am," the woman says. "He's gone."

Born William Mays in McKees Rocks, Pa., on July 20, 1958, Mays developed his style demonstrating knives, mops and other "As Seen on TV" gadgets on Atlantic City's boardwalk. For years he worked as a hired gun on the state fair and home show circuits, attracting crowds with his booming voice and genial manner.

After meeting Orange Glo International founder Max Appel at a home show in Pittsburgh in the mid-1990s, Mays was recruited to demonstrate the environmentally friendly line of cleaning products on the St. Petersburg-based Home Shopping Network, now known as HSN.

Commercials and informercials followed, anchored by the high-energy Mays using them while tossing out kitschy phrases like, "Long live your laundry!"

HSN released a statement Monday morning, praising Mays as a "legend in the electronic retail history whose personality, entrepreneurial spirit and thoughtfulness for others have always been larger than life."

His ubiquitousness and thumbs-up, in-your-face pitches won Mays plenty of fans for his commercials on a wide variety of products. People lined up at his personal appearances for autographed color glossies, and strangers stopped him in airports to chat about the products.

"I enjoy what I do," Mays told The Associated Press in a 2002 interview. "I think it shows."

Mays liked to tell the story of giving bottles of OxiClean to the 300 guests at his wedding, and doing his ad spiel ("powered by the air we breathe!") on the dance floor at the reception. Visitors to his house typically got bottles of cleaner and housekeeping tips.

Besides his wife, Mays is survived by a 3-year-old daughter and a stepson in his 20s, police said.

Man, it sucks about Billy Mays. He was a great guy. You just wanted to "shake his hand" or give him a big squeeze. Sort of a Teddy bear in a lot of ways. Would have been alot of fun to meet him. He was handsome, though in sort of a "Paul Bunyon" sort of way. He had a very annoying voice, but you had to listen LOL. I laughed a lot at his commercials. But I believe that he used all the products he sold. I am so sorry he was cut down so early. Unfortunate, tragic...that poor little girl! What do you tell your 3yr old when Daddy just "doesn't wake up??" My heart goes out to that whole family and I hope they find some peace. The press should leave them alone now. No foul play...no story really in this one. He was a cool guy though..would have loved to have met him just once to see that smile in person. He obviously loved his life and lifestyle and one can only admire those that aspire to what they want to be!

My sympathy goes out to the man's family and friends for their loss.

But I can't understand why he's called things like 'exhuberant' pitchman' - he shouted and tired to bully and browbeat people into buying. That's not a good salesman. When the TV is muted or the channel changed at the sound of his voice, he's not doing a good job.

I'm sure he was a nice man, and I'm sure people loved him and will miss him. the rest of us are just glad that in a short time his braying will no longer be inflicted on us

Major surgery Monday?

Cardiac enlargement?

His EKG had to be abnormal.

Why no pre-op work-up?
He would have died on the OR table anyway.
At least then the family could have sued his doctors for gross negligence.

I was wondering the same thoughts you wrote.. Pre Op work up should have revealed a problem with his heart and blood pressure but then again here in Florida doctor's skills are a big question.. Maybe the doctors didn't even do a Pre Op work up ?

I can't remember so many celebrities/media figures buying the farm in one month in my life.

Fred Travelena just died and Walter Cronkite is on his deathbed. We also had Ed McMahon, Gale Storm, Michael Jackson, Lorena Gale, Bob Bogle (Ventures guitarist), David Carradine, Mays and Farrah Fawcett.

The Grim Reaper is working overtime right now.

What's up HP? ANY comment I make in ANY blog is deleted? LOL!! Am I being quasi-banned even while following the policy? Unbelievable.

It is extremely irritating that we are treated as children. Completely innocuous comments are removed way too often, yet lots of horrible, vile words are left up. Makes no sense and there doesn't seem to be one reasonable rule for all moderators. And apparently some blog writers can moderate their own blogs. Inconsistency breeds contempt.

The Hillsborough County Medical Examiner is compromised. Bought and paid for by the airline, which seeks to avoid a wrongful deth lawsuit.

I don't think a wrongful death suit would fly

even if he did have a head injury.

Unless the pilot was drunk or texting.

fear of that anticipated bad and unusual landing might have caused his heart to go into cardiac arrest territory I know it would have scared me to death..

When he first came on the infomercial scene, I couldn't help but laugh at such an obnoxious, braying pitch. But watching him on Pitch Men, I found him endearing and naturally funny. God speed Billy Mays.

50 or 51 isn't a magic number... people of all ages should be careful. I wonder if he even had a clue about his heart problems.

I find the snide comments about Billy Mays to be pathetic. It's fine to have disliked the man, or the way he pitched product, but so many people have no respect for the dead. Billy did his job with incredible zeal, something sorely lacking in so many people today. Yes, he was loud... he irritated some people. Hit the MUTE button on your remote. But to use HuffPo to berate the man shows how small some people can be. He had a loving wife, children and many friends and these comments serve as insults to all of them. The posters should be ashamed.

And he sold crap to people who didn't need it or couldn't afford it. These types of people are why we are in the shape we are now. consumerism will destroy this country . One down.

Yes, he forced people to buy things, like liquor stores force people to drink alcohol, the states force people to buy lottery tickets, and McDonald's forces people to eat Big Macs. You're the kind of person who refuses to accept personal responsibility for anything, blaming everything on someone else.

OMG...so you bought into it huh? I laughed at his commercials..thought they were funny. I never bought a product that he advertised. Why? Don't need it. I don't buy much I don't need lately.

Billy Mays was a sweet man..and you could tell in the way he delivered his message he was just good at his job. Being good at his job does not mean he sold crap, or that he forced anyone to buy his wares. He offered up that he even used the products he bought and his wife confirms it. I don't know about anything else in his life, but at least Billy Mays was an honest pitchman. Really..how much more honest can you be than to use the products in your own home...and not advertise anything that you won't use yourself? Its the fair thing to do and should be required of all pitchmen to make them more honest in their work!

I agree. Its despicable the things people write about the dead, especially MJ and now Mr. Mays. Happens way too often, I'll start reading comments and get upset by the hate and have to leave. Wish people would save their anger for more important topics.

What is it about "recent plane flights" and sudden death?

Tim Russert flew back from Italy, and died the next day. Now, Billy Mays dies mysteriously after a plane flight. (I know there's other recent examples of stroke and cardiac arrest but I can't remember them)

My theory, (yes, I'm wearing my tin-foil hat)... something in our diets causes blood clots, and airlines are taking less care to adequately pressurize the cabins.

My condolences to Billy's family. He was one of the great pitchmen of all time.

DVT is usually only an issue with long international flights, which is why doctors encourage you to walk around during the flight... provided ajrlines don't institute a seat-belt-unbuckling fee next!

Americans are stressed, tend to work more hours than many countries, and while personal habit improvements have greatly occurred with exercise, smoking is about the same and who knows about alcohol.

The economic collapse promises higher taxes, longer work hours, and reduced standard of living. More strain and stress.

We desperately need prevention of health problems inculcated into our health care system, but in the end, it's the individual who chooses his or her daily habits.

First of all, if some product ruined your laundry, did you write to the company with proof of purchase, the unused portion and photos of before and after? This is what you do when presented with an inferior product. Most of the time they will refund your money. (Been there done that!) If you have not done this..then whose to say you are not just another snarky old bag with nothing better to do than say mean things about the dead.
