Grim Book

Over at The Root, you can read an excerpt of my colleague, Ryan Grim's book This Is Your Country On Drugs: The Secret History Of Getting High In America. A particularly juicy one, at that: the incredible true story of two newspapers, sparring over the story of Nicaraguan Contras, inner-city drug dealers, and the way the whole thing eventually evolved into a tidy little tale of a "victimized" black community, under the thrall of paranoia.

Most people experienced the journalism this way: The San Jose Mercury News broke open "the story of the connection between L.A. crack dealers and the U.S.-funded Nicaraguan Contras." A month later, the Washington Post tore the Mercury News up. Grim says, "The Washington Post, while it launched its assault on the Mercury News, had facts at its disposal demonstrating that the story was accurate." And he goes on to document a fascinating internal struggle at the Post, between reporter Douglas Farah, on the ground in Nicaragua, and the DC-based National Security Reporter Walter Pincus:

Pincus says he didn't actually disagree with Webb's thesis--that the Contras were running drugs--but rather objected to the idea that the CIA was running drugs. Webb had reported, rather, that the Contras were a CIA-backed army but didn't pin the trafficking on them directly. "To me, it was no great shock that some of the people the agency was dealing with were also drug dealers. But the idea that the agency was then running the drug program was totally different."

Pincus' front-page piece ran at more than 4,000 words and was headlined, "CIA and Crack: Evidence Is Lacking of Contra-Tied Plot." The evidence, in fact, was not lacking. It was on the editing room floor. The New York Times and Los Angeles Times would also weigh in with stories purporting to debunk Webb's scoop, but only the Post, as far as I know, did so with independent evidence that backed him up.

And here's the thing: to everyone who despairs of the seemingly too-close cocktail connections between DC journos and the corridors of power, you're going to recognize this story. Pincus had "flirted with joining the CIA and who is routinely accused of having been an undercover asset in the '50s." And while Pincus maintains that the cloak-and-dagger rumors were "overblown," Farah talks about it in pretty clear terms: "At the time, I didn't realize he had been an agency employee for a while. That might have helped me understand what was going on there a bit."

Farah continues:

"If you're talking about our intelligence community tolerating--if not promoting--drugs to pay for black ops, it's rather an uncomfortable thing to do [report on] when you're an establishment paper like the Post," Farah says. "If you were going to be directly rubbing up against the government, they wanted it more solid than it could probably ever be done."

Farah, by the way? He now works for the Department of Homeland Security as a consultant on drug policy. Circle of life.

WaPo exists only to publish and promote the right's talking points. They were cheerleaders during the last 8 years of America's downward spiral, and their primary purpose today is to attack the current administration and its policies.

We need to make laws against propaganda and misinformation to the public.

WaPo is and has always been a CIA media outlet. Operation Mockingbird. The Grahams were in it since before there was a CIA. IF you read the histories of the agency and its predecessors you'll find that it is made up of a lot of WASPY Yale and Harvard boys, old money, and they used it to pursue their interests, goals and desires. When Nixon got too flakey they had him booted-Woodward and Bernstein were CIA, like Pincus and the rest of them.

I think that the CIA has become an instrument of the Uber Class and if we had any sense we would disband them.

Why be surprised that elements of the media work hand in hand with Clandestine Organizaitons or tilt toward Right wing Conservative Administrations, they are after all owned by the wealthy. The wealthy will protect what is in their own interests and will find nothing wrong with helping rid the world of the lower classes that they find unsuitable. First they will bring the poor ethnics from other parts of the world to labor for them and make them wealthier and then when they become a burden to them, they will find ways to be rid of them.

The CIA, Ronald Reagan and Bill Casey were among the world's biggest cocaine and crack dealers I thought everyone knew that I've written of it here a number of times...not that they posted it most of the time...

It's on the DEA website under Diversions Congress forced them to at least post it but if you go read it they tell you they are taking your ISP address etc...

The crack epidemic in our inner cities were brought on by Ronald Reagan directly and Bill Casey and those in his rouge version of the CIA...!

All to fund the Contras...

Simple as that...

That is not true. Much of the money was laundered and went into people's pockets. There were c180s full of it.

I remember reading about this in Rolling Stone many years ago, but no one I told believed that it was true. When will this finally be investigated for the truth of the matter?

"When will this finally be investigated for the truth of the matter?"

Are you kidding? No one will ever investigate this -- there are too many skeletons in that closet. What about the CIA role in the Afghan poppy trade? Who will ever investigate that? What about the events of 9/11? Will we ever see a "true" investigation of those events?

The only way the "truth" leaks out is from brave authors/journalists who write books & blogs. Then, these are discredited by the mainstream media and the public moves on...

A truly sad state of affairs.

Can you say Freeway Ricky Ross? Between Ricky Ross, Oliver North and (by extention) Ronald Reagan and George Bush they succeeded in creating an epidemic in the Black Community inorder to get money to buy weapons for the Iranians. Now, when will they admit to creating the heron epidemic to undermine the Panthers in Oakland?

And if the assertion in the Godfather movie regarding the sale of heroin is even partly accurate, this is not the first time that white people have poisoned the black community.

And what's even more troubling is the fact that in every war since Nam, the military has been the biggest conduit and seller of illegal drugs into this and other countries--Afghanistan's record heroin crop is a great example. And the Bush family's South American cocaine connection has been a poorly kept secret for decades. Oh, and who was the head of the CIA back when this was happening?

I won't read the WaPo since they gave Glenn Beck a big ol' chance to flog his "book," but now I have one more reason to ignore their increasingly desperate attempts to throw every single baby they can find out the window along with the bathwater.

Note to news organizations: the answer is not to become as terrible as possible. Fox news has you beat there. Keep your news rooms staffed with the best you can find, don’t kill you foreign offices, do an excellent job, and embrace new technology in sensible ways. I think the NYT is slowly catching on - you can too!

They hounded Gary Webb right to his death. I also followed this story in real time and the CIA operatives embedded in Pacifica Radio >particularly Larry Bensky< made sure that Gary Webb and The Christic Institute and Maxine Waters were made out to be fools instead of the truly great Americans that they were and are. Dennis Bernstein was also a key player in the purposeful confusion of the issue and was in contact with Walter Pincus. Their jejune credulity was crucial in detouring the investigation which would have saved the country from the horrors of the following years.

Yep! I followed his live reports on KPFA in the Bay Area right up until he was fired!
The "suicide" was something he had speculated on, and had every right to fear.

Alternative explanation is the that the Contras and Sandinistas were both fighting for control of the drug trade. Which devil to support? The pro-US military dictatorship (Contras) or the socialists (Sandinistas)? Both were evil. Might have been better for the US to stay out of the fight and let the two groups have at each other.
